I've heard from an unfortunately reliable source (father, old skool mechanic) that the fuel overflow runs back into the catalytic converter, so if you fill your tank too high consistantly, it will ruin your cat. Can anyone confirm this at all?

Just wondering, coz currently I do this *gulp* lol as it's the only way I can accurately record fuel consumption per tank.

Catalytic convertor definately not, charcoal canister possibly, used to happen to mid 80's Fords alot. Don't worry about it.

In brief overfilling causes Fumes in the car and Fuel spills on the ground. It can/will damage the charcoal cannister.

Overfilling the tank will be the cause of fuel vapors. A small dome at the top of the fuel tank normally is reserved for air and allows for the expansion of the fuel in the tank. If this domed area is filled with fuel, liquid gasoline can enter the evaporative emissions system when the fuel in the tank expands. Components in the evaporative emissions system, like the charcoal canister, can be damaged from liquid gasoline. While it’s okay to round your fuel purchase to the nearest even amount after the pump handle clicks, it’s not a good idea to continue pumping until gasoline runs out of the filler neck.

and if your doing fuel consumption sums based on overfilling your tank your getting incorrect data as it would be more than your fuel tanks size (60L or 70L tank).

The problem with filling my tank up, is that there is no way to do it to the normal amount - being when it cuts out. Just about no matter what position I hold the nozzle in, it cuts out immediately.

By filling it to the same point each time, I know how many litres of fuel it took me to get the distance my trip meter is reading.

The only reason I filled it to the "top" (I stop before it actually overflows lol) is so I know how much fuel I used, if there wasn't something retarded about my fuel tank and not letting me fill it with the nozzle in all the way, I'd be able to fill it til it stopped like it should.

This raises a new question - what the shit is wrong with my tank stopping me from putting the nozzle in? :)

Who ever complied your car did a sh!t job on the filler neck maybe.

When they comply Skylines they have to replace the filler and filler cap area with an ADR approved unit. Sometimes they don't fit it up properly, you get leaks at the join, and a bad join that is not smooth or has been restricted. No saying this is your problem, but worth looking at.
