Hey all

I'll try and not go on a rant here however I'm not making any promises!

I had this car advertised in carsale around 3 times at various times during the week before. And I had made a verbal offer and after doing the usual back and forward he accepted my offer.

Whilst seeing the car he showed me reciepts for car servicing and that which looked good and I liked the car alot.

However since I'm spending a considerable amount of money I wanted to get a full car inspection done.

After giving him a deposit of a couple of hundred a few days later (which is the amount he specified and it was a few days later because he couldnt do it because he was going away) I said that I would need to arrange a car inspection

I had booked it in monday and I said to the guy that they would prefer to have it for a full day but half day is fine. He said this is a bit werid as it only takes half an our to service a car.

I said I'll see what I can do I phone around and all places were the same.

I phoned him back and told him that I needed to have the car fully inspected and I even offered him my car for him to use but he insisted that he wait whilst the inspection was done.

He said that I could get someone to come to his house and inspect it but if it was going to a workshop that he would have to wait whilst it was done if not I can pick up my deposit and not buy it.

So I said that I'm not buying the car without getting a full inspection done which I dont believe is all that unreasonable

I tried to be as flexable as possible with the guy I really dont get it I'm really pissed off that I didn't get the car :)

So my question is do you think its because the car is dodgy or is the guy being uncooperative because he doesn't really want to sell it?

Its very frustrating and annoying after putting a deposit down and almost getting the car and getting all excited now I have to start the car finding process all over again :D

I've checked the car since online and hes put the price down (still higher than what he accepted from me though) so he still wants to sell it.

btw I'm in WA

further to that, if I was selling there is no way I would let the car out of my sight whilst it is being inspected.

As for driven without me, I would need a drivers licence and other Identification in my hand. Might even follow them in another car too. Might let them drive me perhaps so at least I have some control over how they treat the baby!!

Can destroy a car by driving it inappropriately...

I wouldn't be driving it to the workshop.

Sounds like I need to bite the bullet and buy from a dealer.... sigh :)

Inspection shouldent take a day! There would be no way id just give some potential buyer my car for a day to do an inspection, an hour or 2 @ most is all it takes unless ur planning on pulling it apart and putting it back together.

I never suggested that you would be driving it... however as a buyer you must be able to drive it before buying it.

Also, most places should be able to do an inspection in an hour or so... and there should be no problem for the owner to be there watching what happens.

All day or even half a day is not appropriate.

Ok an inspection would involve @ least these things

Checking under the car when its on a hoist for

underbody damage "forklift etc"

Bushes

Mounts - garbox/engine

leaks of any fluid

Brakes - pads/rotors/lines

Suspension - everything tight and within spec

Zhust - condition / hangers etc

Fluids - oil / water / brake

Belts

Now they may also do a compression test and a leak down test which would also show what the current plugs condition is like. This in itself would prob take an hour considoring its a bit of a pain in the ass to get to the VQ's plugs.

However with our cars being fairly new and non turbo I personaly think that as long as the cars engine is running fine and seems to have plenty of zest theres not much point, particually on an engine with less than 60k on the clock

Personaly I did get a compression test done on my 180sx before I bought it because it had a boost controller hooked up and a stock intercooler

Ok, the way I see it all he wants to do is wait around at the workshop while the inspection is done? I don't see that as being unreasonable, I would be the same if I was selling my car. No way am I going to let you drive my car away for an inspection without me being present, deposit or not deposit. If the buyer does not want the seller to be present at the workshop while the inspection is done I would be suspect of the buyer not the seller.

If I was selling my car I wouldn't be too keen to drop my car off to *some* workshop for a day or half day, would be more comfortable with RAC or somewhere with a similar reputation. I got a previous car inspected by RAC, I picked up some things they didn't but on the other hand they picked up some thing I didn't. However I was a bit pissed that it said "HLA noise", I called up and asked what that was to see if it was a big deal or not and I got told "ask your mechanic"... (turned out some people get them replaced but in my case good synthetic oil basically sorted it out over time). That RAC was an on site one, which I think took less than an hour.

I dun see any problems with seller . if i'm selling I won't let the car out of my sight with a stranger for half a day, even with a few grand deposits . full stop.

the car is worth more than deposit

his demand to wait there while car being inspected is reasonable , I would do so myself as a seller.

not everyone here is students or part time worker, so the seller may have a busy work schedule or other work/life commitment - it's up to u as buyer and seller to negotiate suitable time for both...

I'm with you guys, i wouldn't let someone take my car with out me there.

I would need your car, ID, your three kids and your dog then i might let you take it for 3 hours and some money.
