Hey guys,

Just out of curiosity when do you guys fill your tanks? I know i personally do mine once a week, usually on a Tuesday. This is regardless on how much fuel i have. Whethers its 3/4 tanks left or 1/2 tank etc etc.

Recently ive only been doing 150-200 clicks per week in the sky.. which is leaves me inbetween 1/2 and 3/4 tank. This is because of two reasons. The first it is cheaper during the start of the week and the second being its not good for the fuel pump if the fuel is too low. If i keep topping up from that level, would that mean there may be some old old fuel still kicking around in there. Or does it not really matter when the fresh stuff is all mixed in?

Type of Fuel i use: BP Ultimate Ron 98. Filled mostly at the same petrol station using the same bowser...

Hey bud

It really doesn't matter if you fill up constantly or when the light comes on, the fuel pump is at the bottom of the tank so its naturally a first-in-first-out system. Stale fuel is also a myth, a few of the boys had their fuel pumps and filters taken out and there was no deposits or gunk found in them.

I'd only be a little precautions if you have an aftermarket fuel pump as they don't like it as much when you're running on empty but if you have a stock one its totally fine.

Here's a similar thread to yours with a bit more info

Hmmm... That's not that much mileage for that amount of fuel...

Half a tank will get me about 250 km's and 3/4 will get me over 300 km's...

I think the fuel at the bottom of the tank will go first before the fuel at the top just after you finished filling up petrol.

Next time, empty a tank to about 3/4 and the pour some injector cleaner in then fill up the tank to mix up the injector cleaner.

Next service, change your fuel filter and see how you go.

I ran mine out of fuel once, thinking that the fuel light got me the same milage (50km) as the VN lol. If you ever run out, don't bother only putting in 5L, as it won't start, and will lead to compounded frustration :D

I did the fuel filter when I bought mine, I wouldn't anxiously be doing it again in a hurry ha ha ha.

Otherwise when it starts to go under a quarter I generally try to put fuel in it (usually have to drive 35km to a decent servo as the ones here only sell ethanol crap 95 :S)

Notice how i said "leaves me in between 1/2 and 3/4 tank." . This means Ive used only 1/4 tank of fuel. Leaving 3/4's of it left in the tank. Half tank on the dot will see me around 245kms.

Usually when i pump on tuesday's it will only cost me 25ish dollars to fill to the top.

Thanks for your replies guys... ill keep topping it up weekly then =)

Cars never been under 1/4 of a tank. Always BP Ultimate 98 and I always put $50 in and that $50 usually gets me 300k's. No idea what a full tank would get me as I've never used a full tank :)

Anyone else have this problem; after filling up, the needle will not budge from FULL for about 100-150k's then in the next 100k's or so it will go all the way down to 1/4 full?

Ah ok I get you now. Haha!

I take back what I said...

Im pretty sure this just has something to do with the way the fuel tank is in the skylines, They all seem to do it to some degree

Pretty sure the tank is tapered so that theres less volume at the top and more down the bottom. But ive never had mine out so not so sure lol

With my 34, whenever I fill it up full, the needle sits above the FULL for about 70km, then it will drop to down to FULL.

But yea, each 1/4 gives me different mileage, first 1/4 can give me more than second 1/4, but it doesn't really bother me, as I just fill up every tues/wed anyway.

I fill up every 2 or 3 days. Normally get 450kms to a tank from full to sitting on the empty line. I've had the fuel light come on a couple of times but never ran out. I should probably get a daily lol :)

Not sure with a R32, but I've noticed with the R33, R34, when the fuel light comes on, there's still about 15L left in the bank :)

I'd only be a little precautions if you have an aftermarket fuel pump as they don't like it as much when you're running on empty but if you have a stock one its totally fine.

Do you know why its bad for aftermarket pumps? I was told the samething by the mechnical who installed the aftermarket pump (BOSCH intank) when my old stock one died, but he didn't explain the reason.

This happened to me the last time I filled up, was too busy with all of the Uni sh*t going on & I forgot to fill up & was driving around with the needle on E & the fuel light on, I noticed while driving around slowly at the car park the fuel pump was making some loud whinning noises from time to time, scared the crap outta me & I pulled into the closest BP I could find & just filled $10 worth of RON 98. The fuel needle went ontop of E & the pump stopped making that whinning noise.

Later that day, went to my usual Caltex & filled up to full using my parent's shopping discount card :D

I think I've read it somewhere before, someone said that aftermarket pump won't suck up the last 1/3 of the tank or something :P

both those statements are incorrect. the fuel put into the tank will mix with the fuel in the tank already when filling up and then again when you drive along the road as it sloshes around in the tank. also stale fuel is real. go find a car sitting at a wreckers that has been there for a while (like a year or 2) and pull a fuel line off and inspect what comes out. you won't get a car to run on it very well. the higher the octane of the fuel, the faster it goes stale (loses it's octane rating).

I think I've read it somewhere before, someone said that aftermarket pump won't suck up the last 1/3 of the tank or something :woot:

that is usually because it has been mounted incorrectly. when i put an 040 in a mates 33 i made sure it sat nice and low and he didn't have any issues with running it down until the light came on.

the biggest issue with letting the tank run low is that you start to suck up any crap at the bottom of the tank. when there is a lower concentration of the junk (since it all settles on the bottom when the car is stopped). however once you have run the tank down a few times there won't be much crap left in the tank, it will all be in the filter. i opened up the fuel filter from my magna once day and it was full of crap. even just letting the fuel flow out where it normally went it was enough to get your hand covered in debris.

    • It makes you wonder, all these people starting to make a billet replacement head, I wonder if any have thought about trying to adapt tech from newer engines into them. You're already at the full design stage to make a billet head... Why not really spice it up and had some more modern tech into the mix too...
    • Connect all the plumbing up properly. The actual worst part about having the turbo unable to actually build boost, is you can and likely would over soon the turbo if you drove the car (free rev while stationary isnt likely to manage it).   If you do have an air leak as Duncan suggested, you'll have a bad time as the AFM will be saying different to reality.   As you have had the engine out, I'd go over all electrical connections again. If you have a consult cable, plug it in, and see what the ECU thinks is going on. Did you touch the timing belt? If so, double check your timing on the gears is correct AND put a timing light on it while it's idling and see what ignition setting you have. Is the AFM you've installed the one that was in the car previously? You said you replaced seals, what seals exactly? What have you had apart?   From memory when I had my RB25DET with factory throttle, there was two plugs the TPS plug on the loom could go to. One would leave the car running like shit, the other made it work, I think one plug on the TPS area was for something else (an option). It's too many years since I saw that part of the loom to remember properly though.   Is the car idling smooth (as smooth as an RB can)? Does it smell fuelled up?   I have a feeling either timing in timing belt is off, or a sensor isn't right.
    • Theres still skid pan and motokhana days up in QLD at least that are $100 or less. The ones that are ran as "driver training" less so, they're expensive, but just normal skid pan days like SAU ran are still low cost. And thats one of the places I learned to be a lariken, purely by asking for passenger rides, and how people were doing crazy things. Reese gave me plenty of pointers back in the day for skid pan! And yes Duncan, I will never forget your pointers for track work. Especially after Neil got out saying "I am NEVER getting in the car with him again!" 😛
    • 49719 is the cooler loop. Right at the front, LHS of that diagram. Return line from rack (LP side) goes to cooler loop on RHS front of car, then back under engine and returns to bottom of tank. 49717M is feed from tank to pump. HP line out of pump is thick rubber, followed by the hard line that runs down to crossmember and runs in parallel (but opposite flow direction) to the LP return line. Nothing goes anywhere near the firewall or interior of car. The closest they get to that is the connections on the rack.
