black wires are desirable mate. you dont want the theif to see coloured wires and immediately know your alarm and which wire is best to cut.

Thats what i thought, but the alarm dude said i better check. :)

Hi, its not just about black wires, it also has to have a minimum of 2 built in immobiliser circuits and passive arming immobilisers, some insurers stipulate 3 immobiliser sircuits, the remotes need to be code hopping and the actual alarm module needs to have been put through the Australian Standards Testing which costs the alarm manufacturer about $18000 to get the product tested.

I have not know of any Viper alarm or any Directed Electronics brands to be Australian Standards.

Cheers

So thats a no go?

Viper alarms with black wires are fine, Just cars is ok with them if they provide enough points of protection?

I actually prefer Directed brands alarms due to the dependability of them. and warranty if installed by a authorized installer.

IMO ...black wires are pointless , if the alarm is installed right.. a crim wont get into the car and find the right wires anyhow , soldered and taped into the harness like factory wires? but not many installers will go through that amount of detail to hide a car alarm. most just slap them in and zip tie the wires up. which is why they use black wires now!!

best to stop the crim before he gets in the car ??? common sense is the best medicine. dont put items of easy theft in the car in plain view. or park in a shonky spot ?

but like anything, if a real pro crim wants your car, consider it gone... even with GPS tracking devices!!!

best to call your insurance company on that one. you are going to get mixed opinions here.

sapphire and daniel R34 have quite valid points and to be honest - find an installer that gives a shit about his job. 99% of them don't!

if you feel like a bit of travel I can set you up with one that does my work in boronia.

last I spoke to them they were working on one. the 460/480xv comes close but needs an installer worthy enough to fit it properly.

see also clifford but the price tag will scare a lot of people off.

"Just Australian standard which is generally 2point and black wire."

called them up any way, and its okay if it has immobilisers. so its all good :(

I second this motion.

Mongoose or Cyclops, i have used both happily, friends have had issues with their Vipers, but Cyclops remotes aren't as high quality.

Go to Boronia.

Hey, I was just wondering if you guys would know if Just cars would allow Viper alarms, because they have all black wires... Thought id just ask b4 i called them up :/

Thanks, Nick. :P

i know this thread is getting a bit old now but thought this information straight from the Just Car Insurance website may still be useful to some people:

Does my car require an immobiliser?

When obtaining a quote either over the phone or via the internet, you will be informed as to whether an immobiliser is required to be fitted to your car. If so, it will need to meet the Australian Standards for immobilisers (AS 4601:1999). You can obtain further information about Australian Standard immobilisers from http://www.carsafe.com.au

Question still not answered? See below or please ask a Just Car Insurance operator.

I might also ad that there is no reason you can just get an approved Australian Standards immobiliser installed under the "Immobilise Now!" program and then go and install a much nicer viper alarm system for all the bells and whistles...

If you go for an immobiliser with a 'transponder' tag on your keyring then you wont even notice its there and you can still use an alarm with nice remotes and stuff to open, close, chirp, alarm, boot release, wind up windows, lcd screen, whatever you like!!

I am insured with just cars and they said that as long as you have a australian standard engine imobiliser installed it doesnt matter what type of alarm you have fitted.

F_ck thats a long sentence.

So now I have two alarms on my car :P

I wouldn't trust most staff that you talk to on the phone(teleclaims/telesales). Only the processing/product/underwriting depts :P

The PDS for JCI states it needs to be to OZ standard, which pretty much every Suncorp brands' PDS states

The Aust standard straight from basic info thread:

What does a 'Standards approved' immobiliser have?

Under the Australian/New Zealand Standard for Vehicle Immobilisers (AS/NZS 4601:1999, amended in 2003), an immobiliser should have:

- Automatic immobilisation within 40 seconds of ignition switch-off

- Two independent points of immobilisation

- Connections enclosed in security housing

- All black security wiring

- Flashing dashboard LED when system is armed

- Secure owner PIN override

called them up any way, and its okay if it has immobilisers. so its all good :P

Where abouts in boronia is the installer? The last few alarm/ Central locking ive had installed was from the 'shoot me, i hate my job' crowd and it showed.

    • It only looks tidy, as most of the stuff that was on the whole back wall, is now in the trailer to go to the tip, or has been shoved in my 2.2x2.4m "Spare parts room", and now I can't get to anything in there Ha ha ha I could definitely do with a bit more space, but I'd just end up with your problems I'm going to enclose the car port beside the garage, and move a lot of stuff into it I think. OR... It will be setup as a fabrication area, and the main garage will have parts storage in it. I'm not sure yet... Need some pictures of that big shed you've got with the bikes and Skyline in
    • No. I think it's gone. 😭 I think you can get body coloured ones on eBay so I think I'll get one of those... Or just hang a red ribbon from the hole and whack a TOW sticker next to it.
    • Can't say I've had a bad experience with one on my car, then again it only gets washed once or twice a year... The wheels on the other hand, get a good spray often due to my shitty dusty pads.
    • @MBS206 thats pretty neat and tidy to me!  I'll get a photo of mine when I'm out there next. It might require multiple photos to understand the scale of the atrocities though... In total I have 4 sheds of varying sizes and layouts. Main shed is 14x8, second shed is 3x8, third shed is 11x2.5, fourth shed is around 6x4.  All are pretty much full.   The main goal of my cleaning tsunami is to make the main shed predominantly car and motorbikes only. Second shed is my metal fab room (2 x bench grinders, drill press, bench belt sander, metal band saw, scrap metal storage and some of my garden tools.  3rd shed is more bigger garden stuff, storage for engine crane, jack stands, concrete grinder, concrete mixer, air compressor lives there, and it now has two 2mx2m pallet racking shelves with itemised boxes holding building stuff, electrical stuff, plumbing stuff, etc, etc.  The 4th shed is Ryobi electric ride on mower, mini boom sprayer, ancient Kubota tractor, more garden stuff!  I have got a lot of shit....  Then there's the pool house (8mx4m) and the pool pump shed (4mx4m).  I built all of the sheds over the 11 years we've been here.  The main shed was a Ranbuild kit, the rest are all custom made to fit the areas available. Building the main shed taught me a LOT as I had no idea about building anything prior to that!  I've still got one more in me. It will be my man cave which I poured the extra concrete for way back when I poured the concrete for the main shed. The idea is the Skyline will be a centre piece of the main cave once (if...) it's finished.  I told my now 14 year old son yesterday that I will 100% drive him to his year 10 formal in 2 years. Still a long way off but at least I now have a date to work towards! 🤣
