Guys,

i'm "tossin:bahaha: " up what mods to do to my car R33 GTR. At the moment it's pretty stock "bar the cat back exhaust, pods & turbosmart bleed thingy valve". I have ordered the Power FC & Hand Controller and about to contemplate the following mods... what do you think, as I've heard various opinions from reputable performance shops.

PS: I'm not after qtr mile times, sprints etc.. just a reliable "every second" daily driver that goes a bit harder & breathes easier than stock.

Mods to go with existing - Pods, Bleed thingy Valve, Cat Back exhaust.

1. Power FC & HC (which tuner - In Vic)

- I know many will say ICE, but I was also told the man to see is Vinnie from Sti Dockland "x owner of BGT - AKA Hyper Tech - AKA Apexi King". Also told without software hand controller only accesses about 30% of the functions.

2. Front Pipe

- I know a good exhaust shop that's done most of my cars. Thinking of getting a custom made rather than Brand Name.

3. Cat

- Told the stock cat is excellent for my basic mods.

4. Heatshield for Pods & CAI

- Goes without saying hmmm.

5. Adjustable Cam Gears

- I'm a little worried here again hearing various opinions from tuners. Most say it's the best choice, ICE have re manufactured GTR Gears for 220 change-over. But I'm worried if there not centred correctly or done properly whether they could damage the motor.

Thanks

Can I please suggest an electronic boost controller? It will help you turbos spool up much faster as it doesn't leak air going to the wastegate actuators before peak boost is reached like bleed valves like to do...

Also a nice set of dump pipes off the turbos are always good too!

Don't do this to me Merli :P My initial order was Power FC, HC & the EBC. Spoke to Nigel from ICE & nearly every one else said the Apexi EBC was shy-zen-howzen because it only had 1 solenoid. They all said the best was the Profec B or something like that. But they could fix the bleed valve to work just fine.

I was told not to worry about these unless I'm looking at hi-flowing or changing the turbos.

Sorry Simon :bahaha:

It's true that dual solenoid EBCs like the GReddy Profec B, Blitz SBC-ID or HKS EVC4 will control boost slightly better than a single solenoid EBC like the APEXi AVC-R or Boost Kit for PowerFC.

Although that may be the case, but if the Apexi EBC is crappy for having only one solenoid, where does that leave the bleed valve? ;)

There is nothing inherently wrong with bleed valves. They'll increase your boost, albeit a little slower than an EBC and spike at little more, but I appreciate that you want the best for your car, and that's why I proposed the EBC :)

Secondly, turbocharged cars rely on the biggest, free flowing exhaust possible to reduce backpressure so the exhaust wheel isn't restricted at all and can spin as fast as possible, creating more boost and increasing efficiency. To this end, it is better to replace your entire exhaust, turbo-back with a larger diameter exhaust, including the cat with a high-flow item. If you see the dump pipes off a GTR, you can immediately see how restrictive they can be compared to, say, HKS dump pipes.

Cheers,

Andrew.

"- I know a good exhaust shop that's done most of my cars. Thinking of getting a custom made rather than Brand Name."

Why bother? The major multinational japanese companies (HKS, etc) have put a hell of a lot more blood, sweat, tears and R&D into their products - as opposed to something knocked up in someones shed (I don't care how good they can weld...)

Hey, no offence intended - just "calling a spade a spade".  Custom work is great when you need something special fabricated - but when there's a perfectly good product on the shelf - why bother?

Nah mate I'm not offended, I was just having a laugh at you sticking the boot in...

My reasoning is often you can get something custom made thats exactly the same as a name brand for 1/3 of the price. Or for say cam gears - why pay $900 for a couple of bits of aliminium when you have some perfectly good ones that can be custom modified for $200.

$900 for cam gears?? That might be aussie shop prices but no one I know of has paid anywhere that much for cam gears.. I got my HKS cam gears for just over $400 delivered to my door.. I personally wouldn't go stock gears that have been modified..

Mesh, really depends on your budget. I run the PFC with boost kit and have had no problems at all, holds 1.2 bar no worries and I can use the H/C as a boost gauge as well...

Mick, just out of curiousity what are your cam gears set at? Adv and Ret???

Cheers

Brett
