Hay guys im planning to book in a test drive of a brand new car at my nearest dealership I would just like to know what I am able to do.

When you take the car for the test drive is an employee from the dealer come with you ?

When you go for your test drive do you have to pay a deposit ?

If you are accompanied on your test drive by an employee from the dealership will they let you hit rev limiter ?

Will they stop you and take over driving if you drive passionately but within the laws ?

Oh so you have to put down a deposit ? before you got for a test drive ?

Nup! Just let them photostat your licence, and if you don't want them to accompany you, just wear a pinstripe suit and carry your Aston Keyring. ;)

When I took a few cars for a test drive a few years ago I didn't have to pay anything. A salesman came with me on every test drive and I asked how hard I could drive the vehicle.

I took an RX8 but couldn't rev it past 6000rpm as the engine wasnt run in yet. It was the same with a VY SS, but that only had 20km on it. The other 2 vehicles were a 350Z that was already run in and a BA XR8 that was also run in.

Got to test the TC in the XR8 on the Sailsbury Highway just before the bridge to sth road. The old man actually turned off the TC and the salesman didn't know much bout it either. So I did a U-turn and gave it some juice, and quite promptly got it to do a 270 degree spin in front of traffic but cought it and took off. ;)

But also remember that the car your testing, if you arn't going to buy it will be probably sold to someone else. I wouldn't want someone to thrash my car before I bought it if it was a new car. Also be very thorough going over a new car, as I got screwed with the GT I bought.

Other than that enjoy you lucky bugger. :(

Ive test driven alot of cars and im only 22;

-took a bmw m3 out, the dealer did come with me but took me to the mountain roads to thrash the car.

-audi rs4; dealer didnt come with me so i gave that car hell for an hour or so

-clubsport GTS from holden, dealer came with me but let me put the foot down and told me to drive a little harder buut i was nervous in the rain

-honda jazz, used the tiptronic gearbox to redline it; dealer didnt mind

-200sx s15; dealer only complained when i went sideways round corner...said be careful - Bought this car

-ford fiesta; put the foot down a couple of times n gave it some corners, dealer didnt mind at all

-mazda 3; dealer didnt come with me so i did some handbrake manouvers in it

-toyota landcruiser; dealer didnt come so i went offroading for an hour n made a quick stop to the carwash lolz

-Rangerover sport; dealer didnt come so tested the v8 out nicely

-BMW 3 series 325i; dealer didnt come with so gave iit hell but was boring so jst returned it - Bought this car new

-Pergeo 206; fantastic little car; dealer didnt come with so gave it some corners and engine revs

-Volvo v50 i think; had the car for a day but was boring so drove it sedate.

-Hyundai getz; a-b car so gave it some revs but i bought this one

thats about it really, jst dress nice, be confident and act rich - rock up in a GTR, a BMW or an audi etc

they take ur liscence n make a photocopy for infringement notices but give the card back to you

They also take a photocopy for serial test driver pests

I can't believe how many people thrash the cars they test drive...after reading this I would never buy a test drivable car off the showroom floor. nor would I lend any of you a car!

Why on earth do you need to redline an RX8 that doesn't belong to you? If I was the dealer I'd be including a clause about spirited driving in the deposit contract and keeping half of it after seeing what you do.

    • Clutch hydraulics are also all good, looks like a brand new slave cylinder and everything bled up well. No idea what the actual clutch is, and I don't intend to pull the box off on the floor to find out, so unless we have trouble on the dyno or at shakedown that will remain a mystery for the new owner
    • Front brakes are G4 8 pot calipers over 330mm discs with braided lines. Everything looks good, pretty sure these are off my old 350. Pads are brand new and judging from gold colour are Winmax which is what I also run on my race car, Neil and I both sourced brake stuff from Matty at Racebrakes Sydney who really knows his stuff Everything has bled up nicely with all new Motul RBF600 fluid, there were 2 loose hard line connections and the calipers were new on the car so I ended up doing it 3 times but it is perfect now
    • So, starting with the rear brakes. They look like standard R33 GTST, and will need new pads shortly (less than 5mm material, probably only 1 day left). The slotted discs (probably DBA) are near new at 18.01mm and the lines are braided
    • I clean my wheels every time I wash the car, I also clean the barrels, the only product I use on the wheels is truck wash and a pressure washer, followed by (inset your chosen name brand) wash and wax, time per wheel is probably 2 minutes total, cleaning the barrels is easy with one of these microfibre thingies on a stick from Sabco, they're also great for getting in between the front guards and body, and tight spots in the engine bay
    • An updated post here. Sounds to me like there's definitely a bit of sketchiness here.  Old mate with 10 rusting Torana's in the front yard might be more who they're focussed on. (For right or wrong).
