Hi all

So i went to the car wash this afternoon to rinse my car since the stupid birds decided to poop on it and when i started my car after the wash it was in park and the belts started to squick, I then put the car into drive and it was gone... am i at any sort of danger if i keep driving it till monday so i can take to a mechanic or can i fix this issue myself??? please help ;)

probably because they was water on them they were slipping. would be worth tightening them up a fraction or replacing them, because as the weather gets hotter, if the car sits in the sun during the day, when you start it in the afternoon the belts will have stretched a bit from the heat and will slip even more

all the belts were replaced about 2 - 2 1/2 years ago and dont look worn one little bit... I think a bit of tighting will do the magic trick...

mate if its just the front belts (3) don't stress out about it! i quick way (not good for the belts though) is just spray them with WD40. I know to tighten one of the belts you have to get over the car and the alternator is one is pretty tricky to get an spanner on. But aside an hour just to be sure to do all three.

Well i am not chaging the belts yet untill later closer to summer so what i discovered works magically is PAW PAW Ointment lol not only is it good for your body but its also a wonderful thing for the car :(

Nice. But what happens if your battery goes flat or you loose assistance with your steering and drive into a tree?

This is a bit like taking the battery out of a fire alarm so it stops making that annoying "low battery" noise.... :P

odds of the belts breaking are very low, but once u start u doing these crappy repairs your skyline will sooner or later become rat sh*t conditions.

Put a side about 2hrs and 100bucks for all 3 belts and change them

Just know that if you want anything but dayco belts you will most likely have to wait cuz alot of places dont have them on shelf.. The dayco ones being from repco.

Also got my own trick for the belts, good old petrolium jelly (vasoline) always worked well on my mates old senator.

Yeah all these tricks are great.. and everyone keeps a jar of PAWPAW oil in there glovebox..

also if it does break just use an old stocking to replace it....dont worry about this repco rubbish...if ya radiator leaks you can plug it with bubblegum...hubba bubba works best....and if it overheats just pee in the radiator

first rule in the Mechanics for Dummies handbook

If it doesn't move and it should....use WD-40

if it does move and it shouldn't ...use Gaffa tape

keep these 2 things an old pair of stockings, a packet of hubba bubba and a jar of PAWPAW oil in ya glovebox and you will never have a problem... :)

Tighten the belts - having slipping belts "might" cause your battery not to charge fully and do some damage to pullies and pre-maturely wear out the belt itself.

If you are still having issues with noise/slipping replace them.

Tighten your belts, if there is no adjustment left... then buy new belts.

If your belts were done 2 yrs back and have no visible signs of wear/damage they should be fine for a long time yet.

Do Not lube them.

maybe its just me, but isnt squeeling belts mean they are slipping?

why are we lubing up belts that are meant to GRIP the pulleys to make them turn?

very good point, and for a large part you are correct. if a belt is slipping then yes, lubing will make it worse. however if a belt is squealing but not slipping (caused by the belt sticking, kind of like how when you walk on some surfaces your shoes will squeak, or just squealing from when the belt rubs against the pulley as the grooves in the belt slide into the grooves of the pulley) then lubing up will help. but yes in this case, lubing won't help. it would be like putting oil on your brakes to stop them squealing

tighten them up starting with the alternator belt. I had really had squealing from my belts and tried to sys out which one it was, dropping the revs with the clutch and brake stops it aswell for some reason, with the aircon off the only thing I could think off having load is the alternator, tightened her up and sqeal begone :). Don't over tighten it though.

I've got new belts on mine and didn't know wtf was causing the squealing (prev owner did belts before purchase).

DON'T TIGHTEN YOUR BELT IF THEY HAVE BEEN DONE PROPERLY!!! Too many people do this and when you take the water pump out it will look like someone put a grenade in there, also it puts stress on your bearings in the alternator and then you will have to get new bearings for it, also your Power steering pump will start making a humming noise and you will have to change it. The owner before me had it done to my r33 before i re-built the engine and fixed all that.

Just spray some WD40 on them at them moment because WD40 is not a lubricant ............. silicon spray is a lubricant.

If you want to change the belts and its a r33 turbo model its 4pk 835, 865 and 925 and NA its 4pk 845, 850 and 910. You can get the belts form gates or something for a turbo no problem but the NA's have too be ordered for Nissan or pitwork as there the only company that make these sizes under the same brand name.

    • My take on gg2 48mm, 54mm, 58mm, and 62mm compressor map for same size compressor vs gg1 : All gg2 only outflow gg1 above 20 psi. As all g gen 2 surge line at lower left of comp map move to the right, all gg2 sacrifice spool vs same size gg1, surge line move to the right worst for 54mm gg2. So for same size compressor if you want best response, use gg1, if you want max hp at >20psi use gg2 but you will be laggier vs same size gg1. Max compressor efficiency drops to max 75% on all gg2 vs max 76%-80% of same size gg1. Iirc lower efficiency means hotter iat less dense air so lower hp at same operating point of comp map. Also curious why gg2 is mapped to lower max rpm vs same size gg1 (only 48mm size both gg1 gg2 mapped to same rpm) : 54mm gg1 165,000 rpm  vs  gg2 160,000 rpm. 58mm gg1 150,000 rpm vs gg2 140,000rpm. 62mm gg1 145,000 rpm vs gg2 140,000 rpm. If gg2 can safely spin to gg1 rpm then they can flow a bit more than as mapped. Good thing that all gg 2 interchange compressor and turbine housings with same size gg 1. So gg1 owners can buy gg2 chra only if planning to boost >20psi.
    • My stuff is all with Shannon's, granted, I don't really have imports I'm driving on the road, however, I've had multiple cars at the same time with them. Presently we have the Landcruiser on laid up cover, Sarah's Kluger on full cover, and the house insured. About 18 months ago Sarah wrote her Subaru Liberty GTB off, insured with Shannon's, and the payout, and buy back of the wreck was super quick. In 2020 we had the VF Commodore totalled in a major hailstorm. Storm was on the Saturday, I called on the Sunday and lodged it, vehicle was towed on Tuesday night, assessment team called on Wednesday to say it was a total loss and get payout details, money was in the bank on Thursday morning. Have had a few other claims both at fault, and not at fault, over the years, and never had an issue with them.   Funnily enough, they're also the cheapest insurer I find for things like Sarah's Kluger.   I will say I'm less impressed dealing with them lately around "the experience", as a lot of their staff that you deal with aren't car enthusiasts. Shannon's has a much more main stream feel ever since they decided to become "big corporate", laid a heap of staff off, and then hired a bunch of non enthusiasts. At the same time they've been making a push to be less "call us and we'll personally have someone who cares help" to "hey, this computer can do stuff for you" and are trying to get more square pegs to fit round holes. (That's just the vibe I get from them). Again, have had no issues with claims with them, but get a bit of a "less personal" feel from them.
    • A thing I wasn’t happy with with enthusiast was during the initial phone call they told me they’d insure it for 130k but needed photos.   I then sent them photos and they told me $80k as there were other cars either similar modifications available for around that price, I told them to send me the links to said cars so that I can buy them. i then sent the modification list with prices of the parts (no labor) and the price then came to 115k, which is still shy of the 130 that was agreed in the initial phone call

    • I agree that delayed payment probably isn't the most suitable solution. It seems a solid complete transaction would be best. As I wouldn't be using this sale as a line of credit that would typically earn interest, we can probably arrange a much cleaner single transaction deal. I can do $92.52 today. Would you prefer EFT, or Cash on Pickup?  😛
