So i got a HDMI cable from Umart when i bought my new Panasonic full HD 1080p tv,

But cannot for the life of me figure out how to connect the PS3 using the HDMI cable,

So far i have tried,

- Connect the PS3 using HDMI and component cables,

- When the PS3 comes on it says "a HDMI device has been detected (or something like that), would you like to switch to this mode (something or other).

- I click yes, and change the tv over to the HDMI input channel, and just a black screen, no audio or video (yes i have checked that i am on the right HDMI channel as this tv has 3 HDMI inputs)

also tried

- Connect both cables,

- Select no when asked to change to HDMI device,

- Go into Display settings and change the type to HDMI connector,

- Change to HDMI channel, still a black screen

I have reset the Display settings when turning on the PS3 as well incase it made any difference, to no avail.

Has anyone had this problem, and does anyone have a Panasonic HD tv with a PS3 connected via HDMI?

I think you need to change the HDMI input to "PC".

Have you tried another cable just to be sure?

FYI - Any $20 cable works, don't EVER spend big on HDMI unless you are going over 5-7m in length.

i spent $21 on a 1.5 or 2m cable from umart,

i haven't tried another hdmi cable at this stage, not keen on going and buying one, might have to try and find someone with one,

I've flicked through every input channel on the tv (4 avi inputs, 3 hdmi inputs and the PC input) to no avail

unfortunatly i havent got any other hdmi devices,

The thing that throws me is that with the cable plugged in, it detects that there is a HDMI device attached, but it just doesnt seem to want to display anything (or audio for that matter), the only other thing i can think of is to try another cable at this point, but even then, i dont see why it would detect the device if the cable was faulty,

interested to know what cables you were using before you got the hdmi?

Well there must be something wrong with the cable.

When you said you connected the hdmi and component cables that doesnt make sense to me. The component cables would be for one tv channel and the hdmi for a different other. So unless your trying to fast track checking if either of them work i dont see why you would do that.

I have a tv that has 3 hdmi channels so my process would be the same for you.

My steps would be

Connect hdmi cable to ps3 and TV hdmi1 input

Select HDMI1 channel on TV

Turn on ps3

Follow promps

If you have followed these steps and it sounds like you have and it still doesnt work then there is something wrong with the tv, ps3 or cable. You just have to go through process of elimation. More then likely the TV.

To eliminate cable

See if you can test the cable on another hdmi device to eliminate the cable.

To eliminate Ps3

Use someone elses tv that supports hdmi with your ps3 and their working hdmi cable

Obviously if all these work then the TV is faulty or not setup correctly.

I have the same problem with my Mums 1080p Samsung TV.

Using a HDMI cable I can plug in my laptop and it works fine, I plug in her DVD player using the same HDMI cable and I get nothing, plug in my PS3 using the same cable I get nothing. Take PS3 home to my house with 720p TV using the same HDMI cable and it works.

no farking idea why and it drove me crazy trying to figure it out.

My reason for thinking its not the cable is as i said, the ps3 still detects a HDMI device as being connected.

I have used both component cables and the usual avi cables, both work fine.

The reason for using both the avi cables and the hdmi is to start it in avi, then switch channels when using the method of starting with the avi cables, going into the display settings and changing it to HDMI output and then switching input channels on the tv.

As i said unfortunatly i have no other HDMI devices, and i don't happen to know anyone with a HDMI cable that is close enough to use.

I may have to just go and buy another cable to test that theory,

The PS3 itself hasn't missed a beat, and the TV is only about 1 week old,

So id like to explore other options and hear from those who have a similar problem, and hopefully fixed it.

Damn that sux

Have you tried using a different HDMI cable yourself? and when you connected the PS3 to your mums tv, did it detect that a HDMI device had been connected?

I'd say faulty HDMI lead. The PS3 is just detecting the fact that there is an

HDMI plugged in, not that there is a TV connected.

HDMI is pretty fragile especially cheap cables, the slightest pressure and they snap.

I'm not saying go spend $300 bucks on one. Crest do some cheaper ones that are decent quality.

Well from the original post it says that he is connexting both the HDMI cable and the componet cable?

Plug in just the HDMI cable, not the component cable with it.

Ok, just to clarify, I have tried connecting it both ways, using both the HDMI and the avi

and just the HDMI cable on its own.

i bet you its the HDMI cable. Just take it to a shop and ask them if they would plug it in for you, they did it for me and the cable was broken from new and appearently they get 1 in 5 back.

ah thats not a bad idea, i think i might do this

Only other thing i can think of is that the hdmi channel is not setup for your ps3. I know with my hdtv i have an option of setting up a channel for gaming, blu-ray, pc etc etc. Unlikely to be an issue but you never know. I could never play my pc properly in 1080p through the tv because it wasnt selected as pc format. Once i changed it that fixed it.

So were you always playing your consoles in standard def before you got the new tv?

try changing the setup of the channel input to suit the application. eg set that hdmi channel to gaming and see if that fixs it.

I didnt read all the replys so sorry if it has already been solved but

I got the same tv i think with a ps3 also it works fine for me last night when i set mine up i have a moster m1000 cable thou.

i had both compnet and hdmi plugged in i went o the video setting change it to hdmi selected all the diferrnt hdmi sizes 780p 1080 etcs and set sound to componet (because i have suround sound) click hdmi 1 selected yes and it worked id say its cable, dirty hdmi ports (try cleaning them if its dirty), or faulty port on either device lets hope its the cable

yeah i have only been playing in standard def, although the component cables allow up to 1080i which looks pretty nice, but since i have the ability to use a HDMI cable id like to make sure it works, even if the difference is only minor between 1080i and 1080p (this im not too sure of)

I will also give the ports a clean, the one on the tv i imagine should be immaculate being brand new, but its quite possible that the ps3 port is somewhat dusty as i've had it for near on a year.

and fingers crossed its a faulty cable, will most likely take it back and have it tested tonight

    • Yeah I understand you have to pay for an updated map or subscription service or something. But I can't even find a current map for Australia. My map is dated 2017, but didn't this car version still sell in Australia until 2021?   Also, just as an aside, the navigation system warns you of traffic incidences ahead.....why would they include that on a map they knew is not receiving live information. I am forever going to be warned of an incident that probably existed for 30 minutes 8 years ago.

    • Run it in open loop for now, and drop the frequency down. This lowers the resolution and requires more duty cycle to do anything, however good to troubleshoot.
