lol at the defenders of the faith...

I'm sorry but both STis and Evos have much better low down torque than GT-Rs, making them a much better prospect for daily use, Stock v stock. Bottom end torque has never been the RB's strong point. GT-R owners, go and drive a 260RS and see how much worse it is with a few extra kilos on board.

The biggest problem I can see with driving an STi is that, since 1999 at least, they've been as ugly as a hatful of arseholes.

They're not that good looking. Couple that to an exhaust note that is second only to a rotor in its abominibal sound and you have both ends of the ugly spectrum covered.

agreed.it takes an RB a little bit to come on song. STi is a different matter due to weight. as for looks - nope. thats why I shoved the entire lot into a EARLIER body.

EG this:

that does tarmac rather well :(

Evo, STI, RX7, GTR... all have their good points, all have their bad points.. yeh the GTR can be made the most powerful.. but power isnt everything, given a reasonable budget, and to be used in normal street application.. they are all even... i personally love the punchiness and point to point driving style of the evo and STI... they are light for a 4wd car.. nimble and precise.. have a great sound and large a/m parts following.. with a rear sway bar, they will hang it out just as good as a rear bias car.

GTR's are heavy... the lack of torque down low combined with the weight can make them feel lethargic.. you cant throw them around like a rex, they dont respond down low... so you come into a tight corner and you have to drop it back from third to second to keep the revs up, the rex can power out in 3rd. and be ready for the next corner..

i like the steering position of the rex.. it makes heel and toeing easy as theres alot of room... i couldnt do that very well in bakes R34.. it just felt different.. the r34 feels like your in a rocket ship, ready for blasting.

take $20000 and you can either get an r32 gtr, or a classic shape wrx for $10-$15000.. spend the remainder on it and i bet the rex comes out the better all round car.. coilovers, brake pads, clutch, VF34 turbo, semi slick tyres and some engine management and it will fly..

the R32 will need a bit more spent on it, given its age and complicated systems, aka, twin turbo, attessa and hicas, not to mention that they are 20 years old so some shit just wont work.

the rexs gearboxes are only weak if you launch it from standing start... which is ghey anyway..

someone post up a video of them doing gymkhana in a GTR like ken brock and ill change my tune..

BUT... before you all flame me out... i love my gtr's and they will forever be in my garage.

Even thats debateable, a lad I know was making ~1200whp out of his EVO before he gave up on it partly due to not being able to justify the cost to buy transfer case etc which can handle the grunt involved. Someone has got their 4G63 drag car into the 6s in the states which must be making some huge power... its a bit annoying.

Good points NZM^

I don't doubt Ken Block could do similar things in a GTR were he used to driving it, R32 did enjoy a short stint as a Group B rally car.

i am a gtr fan but also just love cars in general. i cant comment on how a evo or wrx feels because i havnt been in one, but from what ive seen i have always liked them, i just dont like the new wrx the shape is too sophisticated and a little girly, they have lost the edge it used to have. my favourite models was the 2005 sti's and the 1999 models, especially some of the limited edition ones they looked great. and i like the evo's also but kind of the same way as the wrx's because i dont really like the evo 10 but i like the evo 9, but for some reason my favourite is the evo 3 and 4.

the new wrx's are growing on me. a mates sister bought a new wrx in the typical blue and my mate says it has plenty of go (and this is from a guy with a supercharged altezza and 2 sprinters - one 4age and one sr20det), so he isn't comparing it to a commodore or anything like that, LOL.

i actually think that even if i had the money, i would get a new sti or evo x over the new gtr. sure the new gtr may be fast, but even if i had plenty of money i wouldn't want to be paying the equvilant of a new wrx everytime i had to get a service done, LOL.

i dunno... company director at my work has a new STi.. and its gone in to have the engine replaced under warranty, its got less than 5000kms on it.. they have found a fault with one of the engine building processes or something... i dont think i could comfortably get in that car and drive it always wondering if you are going to make it, or if your oging to be stuck on the side of the road somewhere because its gone again.

least with the old ones, if it goes, it goes, rebuild it.

ill do it. haha as long as he dosent blow it up. which he prob would the way he smashes the limiter. (to the ken block thing that is)

I dont mind the Evo's, id much rather a evo over a WRX, i hate the sound of the wrx. If i wasnt a gtr fan id buy an evo for sure. they a nice car.

I drove an MY06...

It was so nimble!

It was so smooth!

It was an extraordinary powerhouse!

I could take on a R34 GT-R!

I then had a go at GT2 and won!

I saw a Diablo down the street as it fanged its way of the lights and I overtook it!

I went around the corner and couldn't see the competition for dust!

And then I stepped out onto the pavement after my hypnotherapy session, & reality hit! :whistling:

I have to admit after years and years of not being a fan at all i saw a blue hatch and liked it enough to go and test drive the 09 model recently.

To be honest i was quite impressed, especially when looking at new cars in that 40K bracket. It goes well, stops well, handles like a go kart (comparitively anyway). It trounces that dodgy ralliart lancer that handles like a bucket of slop. If i was restrained to new cars under a 45K it'd be a 2 horse race between that and the FG XR6T.

Luckily for me i'm not restricted to just new cars so i'll be buying something i'll really want to drive for the next 5 years (or until i can afford an R35 GTR or something obnoxious)

lmao, mate ill pay for a session to have one night with jessica alba or misa campo.

the whole wrx thing was always a 4 door practical rally style car with boy racer looks. The new one is a little too.....tame; my cousin has the new STI in white and although the cool little details like the seats, flared arches, brembo brakes are cool and it goes nicely; jst not worth the pricetag.

He had the old version and steeped up to this (a rexy fan forever) but now is selling it cos it jst dosent float his boat.

Highly unlikely, Group B was outlawed in 1986.... And the GTR was built to be a Group A car (Which replaced Group B as a racing and rallying formula)

The latest Evo weighs over 1800 kg so I cant see it being any lighter than a gtr skyline :whistling:

sure that is not a bit under 1600kgs???

25psi in a sti???!!!

More like 14psi!!

I have owned all 3 cars and for me the gtr straight line blaster rexxy for bends and sounds, evo for easy power when modding..

All 3 have there goood and bad points, weak and strong points too...

And 1800kgs for a evo?? yeah with 4 fattys in it maybe try around 1500kgs....

Its pointless saying which is the best i aint biased on any its more down to what you want it for ie gtr for grand touring/top end speed or the other 2 for quick point to point and great hadnling...

The only problem I have with Subaru is that the new ones are ugly!

Never being a fan of any kind of hatch backs, they all look like a sedan where someone had given it a boot in the a**... IMO :whistling:

I like the look of the older ones, same goes with the EVOs as well, don't really like the look of the current EVO 10, not a fan of the fat shark head...

    • Harness update time have had great fun and learnt so much already so far with this project. I started off making both the ignition and injector sub harnesses in the hope any mistakes i made here aren't as hard to undo and learn from as the main harness.  A cool comparison of the old harness using presumably TXL wire and the new which is using Tezel. Also opted to use DTM plugs to keep the whole setup as neat and tidy as possible and tucked the wiring under the coil bracket to try and keep it all from sticking out too much. Although the injector harness, I'm not overly happy with as I'm still using the rubber boots that are supplied with the type of plugs it just looks ugly and sticks out like a sore thumb with the white identifiers so a slight redesign may be done.   Then it was main harness time and most importantly trying to route it nice and away from the heat it will use the OEM heater hose routing which is no longer present to keep the harness up high and secure. it's amazing how much smaller this harness is able to be compared to the old one. plugged everything into the emtron and with the help of the tuner again attempted to start it up and instantly fired up and running smoothly on all 6 which was a big shock to myself. So still some routing and adjusting to be done for the final fit up and installing a knock sensor harness plug which is in the post all has gone surprisingly well.     The old harness for shits and giggles.
    • They do that at random every now and then, with almost no detectable cause. Mine has done it a couple of times (over 25 years!!). Never worked out why.
    • I don't post on here and have been lurking for some time now. Many of the topics have helped me out more times than i can count. I was racing yesterday (11/9) and blew a front right CV shaft. I have spares so I popped a new one in. A thread i read previously said to check the engine mounts if you blow a front CV. Upon inspection, the front right mount was completely separated from the upper plate. This discovery saved me time and money, because i would have blown another CV if i went back out. Just wanted to thank you guys and wish everyone luck with with their builds. (Now if we could only come up with a solution for my power steering belt flying off after hitting the rev limiter, lol)
