Hey guys,

Im looking for a daily car that I can use to tow my R33 to track days (mainly winton). My budget is $4,000 or less & it needs to be reliable. What will fit this category?

A car that can be used for this thats also capable of a bit of fun would be a bonus. :P

Your advice and/or experience with tow-capable cars you have used is much appreciated!

not too many cars that will do the job that well in that price range. early model patrols or landcruisers will do it ok (go petrol not diesel though), otherwise v8 falcon or commodore. the 6's will tow it as well, but not as well as the v8.

My tow car is my AU Falcon with LSD, tow bar not rated for my mates 1500kg trailer and lowered suspension. AU's are pretty cheap these days, easily pick one up under 4gz maybe with 200000 plus kms on it. It does ok (only a 4L 6 cyl) for towing with trailer and car on it with just under 3000kg but i do watch the temp gauge because it doesnt have a tranny cooler.

A few musts for tow car:

transmission cooler

tow bar rated to towing weight

LSD can help

and decent brakes if trailer wont have any...

You need to check the towing capacity of the vehicle before you buy.

Most states stipulate the laden mass of the trailer mustn't exceed the kerb mass of the tow vehicle.

That makes a dunnydoor's max tow about 1.5 t and I know mine is deadly towing that much.

You have to move up to a 4X to get any (legal) decent tow capacity.
