i think it depends on the type of enclosure, engineering rules state in needs to be made of aliminium or sheet metel.

but if you get defected for it most mechanics will still pass it for you because its enclosed. but i agree i think it comes down to the cop and his attitude and opinion.

hi,

i own an R32 Gts-t 93 model i got defected for my pod filter not being enclosed, wondering if anyone knows where i can get an original air filter or box? tried specialist mechanics and jap wreckers but no luck im from south west sydney (campbelltown)

ouch sory to hear,

I agree with the comments it depends on the officer, in general not being a tool goes a long way

I got pulled over by the taipan guys when I had my old R34, silver metal pod enclosure with window and he said he wouldn't ping me for it

had a ssqv but it as plumbed back so no hassles and ic and piping painted black so it looked stock and wasn't picked up,

stealth pays off

I agree with the comments it depends on the officer, in general not being a tool goes a long way

stealth dose payoff , i even had to spray the intercooler black. These days most mechanics wont pass you at the drop of a hat they are now forced by the RTA to record the defects they clear so if the car they pass gets busted again that mechanic will most certainly loose their licence.

really guys at the end of the day they will get you if thats what they want , i had a friend with a bone standard out of the factory holden commodore they got him for to many clicks of the hand break... finished defected! when it comes to the law there is no limits they make it up as they go along. Best advice i was given is engineer the whole car , what a joke! and when i got done i was both compliant and co-operative just imagine if i wasnt.

it goes to the credibility of the whole system for sure. I work for the RTA and i play the same game as you all only if i go to the pits they go harder on me coz i should know better apparantly.

The lower and raising debat really grabbed at it too. The comments of the engineer signatory in newcastle (Athol) slammed the government for the bandaid and draconian fix to laws that were fine already. Fact is many of our laws are fine as they are. Its the interpreation that is so vague, inconsistent or overdone.

Why?

Coz the government would rather make new laws and beef up standards (not bad things in all cases) than spend any money or time on educating the police officers, rta inspectors, blue slip inspectors and engineer signatories on what is and isnt acceptable.

The engineer signatories have offered to train police and rta to get the lines consistent and they get shunned.

It's rediculous and hence why i still call for premier rees resignation.

There are some of us trying to do it correctly and even more of us that when defected actually want to do the right thing but the bar keeps getting moved between officers of the law and rta inspetors. Guys like Tonygtst for instance...

I've been told by an engineer (Morry Akbarian, first name on the engineers list) that you don't need a cover, and to be honest, I've been searching for YEARS for a shread of written evidence that says you need a cover over your pod. I have found absolutely nothing to date.

I personally think it's an absolute load of bullshit. I've asked every police officer I've come in contact with about why they think it's illegal and I'm yet to get an answer that even sounds correct...

It's for noise restrictions: The cover makes it worse, and it is in no way near 89Db. There is no official limit on 'induction noise' so the nearest limit will have to do.

It's incase a backfire lights it on fire: I assumed he didn't mean from the exhaust, and that he was talking about how when a carburetted vehicle ignites the oiled filters that sit atop the intake. Quite a rare case, but far less rare then a filter being ignited by a direct injected engine...

What does it even have to be enclosed from? The engine bay? So if it's not in the engine bay then it doesn't need to be enclosed? Isn't it already enclosed in the engine bay? Another officer just said that it HAS to be enclosed, no matter where it was... ENCLOSED FROM WHAT?!

I wish when a police officer was defecting you, he had to show you written evidence of what is wrong and why it's a defect...

this guy just wanted to make my life difficult... i was done for the exhaust as well which i will cop as the thing is over 95dB anywhere anytime and I'm just happy I didn't get an emissions or noise test

but the pod boils me as every other cop has looked at it and said it was ok

I got done speeding last week 108 in an 80 zone, I didn't realize it was road works i though it was still 110 the cop asked me if the car was modified and asked me to pop the bonnet looked at the pods and asked me if a car goes better with hot or cold air going in it and SUGGESTED i get a box for them from toyshop, I was pretty surprised. After that he said it would be a good idea to get my exhaust tested for volume to make sure it is legal, i was lucky all I got was the fine and loss of three points as it could have been much much worse. Good bloke in my opinion!

you are so right , because when i used to live in qld pods are legal as long as they are secured , so i don't get it either i guess its up to the cop and they all know they can ping you for air pod somehow

    • I would not be surprised if you are the only person on earth that has the interest/desire to do that lol.  The Haltech base map is a really good starting point, the car will fire easily and drive very well, even on mild boost levels. To me, following your advice sounds like some sort of ancient Chinese water torcher lol (this is not an insult Josh, never change <3)
    • Those car show concepts from the 2000's and 2010's like the Floria and IDx were brilliant and should've gone ahead, at least one of them. But neither Honda nor Nissan are thinking about affordable performance any more, which is truly sad.  Even if Toyota's liquid hydrogen ICE development reaches the point where it's commercially viable and the infrastructure to support it, Honda/Nissan would have to wait until Toyota allow fee access to their patents to offer it with any smaller performance models they released to take advantage of it.  
    • A sporty manual RWD coupe with a IL4 Honda engine would only be a good thing I assume we won't see anything released for a few years though, unless informal talks and designs have been going on for a few years,  and due to the current, and future, emmisions and safety requirements, I assume anything "sporty" they would do would be at least some hybrid thingie And hopefully anything they are thinking of has nice lines, without lots of plastic and fake bits hanging off it like that horrendous FK8 that looked like it was designed by a 13 year old The other issue of course in the current market is cost, currently the type R is around $70k, a twin is around $50k Meh, I'm old and grumpy and would rather buy a older model car and waste my coin on that than buying anything currently available new
