hey guys

i am soon to be in the market for a skyline with a 30k budget in mind

i want to have a daily driver with good and responsive power and great handling

but i have a problem i dont know whether to go for a r32 gtr or a r34 gtt from what i know the neo engine in the r34 has the same stock power as the gtr but its cheaper however the gtr has better high end potential

i love the r34 and the r32 just the r32 is a older car

however u can pick either one up for under 20 k

so all you skyline owners and lovers out there what are your personal opinions and what reconmendations would u make

( i am thinking to make 350- 400 hp atw) but maybe more later one

but remain in my 30 k budget for now ( including purchase price of the car)

thanks

As a daily driven car you'd probably want to be going for the R34 GT-T... newer, more reliable being newer, much easier to find one that isnt on the verge of blowing up and so forth. You can pick up either for under $20k but you get what you pay for.

true that but the fact that it has the gtr motor and all wheel drive is pretty tempting

i mean for under 20 k i reakon ur still gettting what ur paying for and some of them are already modded so that would save some money

but i mean still its really still a very hard decision

and just for interest how much hp is considered usable power and how much power can the stock gtr gear box etc handle without having to go crazy with forged internals new gearbox and all that

also how much would it cost ( approx ) to build a 400 hp r32 gtr or r34 gtt

300kw at the wheels is pretty decent power. You are going to need to change turbo's, ecu, tune, injectors, fuel pump (depening on what it comes with), clutch (depening on what it comes with), exhaust (depening on what it comes with), to put that power down you will also need good tyres/suspension (depening on what it comes with).

Its kind of a hard power level because if you want 200-250kw at all 4 or less you could do it without having to change as much, but beyond that you are really going to need turbos and then all the supporting mods they require. Also if you plan on driving it daily and you hammer it, the stock internals probably wont last.

All I can say to you is that GTR's are NOT cheap, particularly if you have got a few mods, also if you buy a cheap example and mod it up you a really going to want a rebuild otherwise it will just blow up and with that and mods you will be looking at over $30k.

If you went for a 34 GT-T it would be cheaper and with the right turbo / ecu you could get that power but I don't know why anyone wants a car with 300kw at the rear wheels for the road... You wont be able to utilise the power.

If I were you, I would buy an s15 for about $22k (one that has decent wheels and tyres already and most have exhaust system). Then you just buy intercooler, power fc and get a decent tune and you will have just under 200rwkw in a car that weighs <1,300kg... It will be plenty fast and fun to drive and also be useable and for less than $30k.

thats my 2 cents anyway.

Bolded for truth. Theyre not easy to live with as a daily drive. I dont regret a thing, but the old girl is a 1997...R33...if ur going a GTR a 33 is your happy median. you still get a car thats not heaps old and has the coveted RB26...but it will still cost you a mint on upkeep. As any GTR does.

Yeah, if he wants the kind of power he is talkin about out of a GTR, that is a daily, AND for less than $30k.... I just dont think its a good idea.

i own an R34 GTT and havnt looked back since, i payed 20k for mine, but for 30k you can pick up a work of art. id never own another skyline bar the 34.

yerr i know i love the r34 more then any other skyline ( especially the gtr it just looks so agressive and all just the price tag is a bit of a worry) just that the twin turbo and the AWD system is soo tempting

i mean ur getting it for the same price one is a GTR and one isnt

i have been seriously considering a gtt but them put a nice kit on it ( no offence or anything) but the stock from bar on the gtt is kinda boring

oh and quick question what is the difference from a skyline r34 25 gt and a skyline gtt

thanks

Get yourself a R33 GTR :)

although the r33 is my least favorite skyline out of the r32 - r34 ( not saying its not a beautiful car just saying that i would prefer the other two over the r33)

but on that i would just like to say your r33 is beautiful compared to many i have seen just the style, look and how clean it is. you did a great job on the car.

however its not really what i am looking for as it is a bit out of my price range.

i was thinking of getting something around the 20k mark so i have a bit of dough to spend on mods etc

but dont get me wrong your car is stunningly beautiful.

I use my GTR as a daily and apart from the maintenance & fuel costs I find it easy to live with. I haven't touched the engine in mine infact it still has the compliance cat installed and I think its quick enough as a daily. If you're going to get one as a daily make sure you aim your mods that way.

Stay away from big power that you will never use on the street. You can break every speed limit in 3rd gear and it comes up pretty quick even in a stock GTR. Get some decent suspension in there and a good flowing exhaust and away you go.

If your set on 300kw then I would go the GTR over the GTT simply because its easier to make the power and the power is more usable in a GTR. Have a look in the Forced Induction Turbo Stickys for some ideas for what turbos you will need and the supporting mods people have.

For 300kw I would be going for HKS GT- SS turbos or the Garrett equivalent. I think the 2860 -9s are the closest now. Or if you think you will be looking for more power later on go for some HKS 2530s or Garrett 2860 - 5s i think they are.

out of curiousity how much would it cost to builld a 300 kw skyline gtt with the rb25det neo engine?

not including the purchase price of the car

and is it actually safe to buy a car which already has been modified?

A fair amount I would suggest especially if you pay someone to do it.

It's beyond a stage 1 tune.

Plus I'd think it would be wise to add costs for suspension, brakes, clutch (defo) at that sort of power.

I like all Skylines.

I bought a 33 GTST for a few reasons. One it was stock and clean. A stock car (assuming it has not been modded then de-modded) is more likely to not be on the verge of mechanical meltdown. Another is it's my first 'fast' car and I didn't want to spend the extra 10 k say that a good 34 GTT would cost. Maybe I'd not really enjoy it that much (wrong ;) anyway). Another reason for getting stock is that with 'only' ~130 kw at the rw's I'd be less likely to have an upset and crash etc. Not that I am a poor driver but I'm old enough to know I'm inexperienced with HPV's and it is only prudent to be like that IMHO.

I wasn't considering a 32 GTR 'cos of the power for that reason, even though I like the look...and they are a GTR. Also I needed a daily drive and was wary of the complexity which implies more servicing etc. I like the look of the 33 S2 even though some don't....I like that long(ish), lowdown, look...wide. It looks longer than it is of course, but it has that presence like say a Soarer...the long(ish) bonnet, mean, muscley, it's really only a medium sized car of course though. The inside is fairly roomy, doesn't feel cramped...feels expansive in the front seats. Yeah the 34 looks great I think also, more aggressively styled but less like an archetypal 'tough' car IMHO which is what the 33 looks like...the trade off is that the 33 is a bit more anonymous.

yerr that is true

one thing has really bugged me though see i am 6 foot 2 or 1.88 metres tall and i have some trouble with some cars due to my hieght would that be of a problem with the skyline particularly the r34 ?

what would be a power figure in a car used as a daily which is responsive and yet power ful that wouldnt cost too much to make on a r34 gtt? with that 30 k budget in mind ( including price of car) ?

and just wondering if u guys had 30 k or so would u purchase a r34 gtt and mod it up or save another 10 k or so and get a r34 gtr ? sorry if i am a bit of a hassle but its just i wish to know as much as i can before i make the purchase and end up realising it was a mistake

so any recommendations are welcome

cheers guys thanks for all the help

    • I like mine. Much better than stock. Like i said before the reverse/parking cameras look even worse than normal, still useable. When you buy one make sure it's the latest version. Heaps of cheap ones that run the old hardware and software. Got mine from AliExpress. Mine is quick no lag, boots up 1-2 sec. Menu is fast. Netflix is fine and so is YouTube. Android Auto is random taking 3sec to 15sec. Most of the time it's quick. Very rare it doesn't connect. But that could be a phone thing.   Now I think they use a Pixel 3XL to run this whole thing which i guess is fine, but the problem is that some apps will not work on old hardware like Disney Plus  Maybe Prime Video too 🤔. they will not update. Iv'e tried getting the APK Disney + but i still couldn't get it working. I have a Data sim installed so i have internet all the time. You can't Hotspot off your phone and connect Android Auto at the same time. Not that you need too, if you want you can hotspot off your phone and run any internet map app (google maps) and you can run the Spotify app on it's own (the app runs better than android auto) You can still access the INFINITI intouch system for all the o.g stuff    P.S i got new non Polarization Sunglasses too 😎
    • I also don't mean to rain on your parade. But with a 5-10k budget for road only? I'd want to check confirmation that everything IS working correctly and I'm with @GTSBoy for a plan of action here. I'd be checking subframes, bushes, exhaust hangers, interior bits and generally QOL things and CONFIRMING they are working right before thinking about motor. You can get 250KW+ on stock RB26 hardware by simply removing the built in restrictors and tuning the stock ECU. If you want purity that's as far to take it, which I would be worried to do and won't think the budget would allow for when earnestly checking for 30+ year old car stuff.
    • I specifically said buy new performance car because of the use case here (i.e, no track use and fun livable everything/do it all easily if not especially amazing as a drivers car). Tracking an 80K Skyline and an 80K M2 makes the BMW the obviously more risky purchase WHEN something goes wrong you suddenly can't easily fix it with hand tools and readily available parts that you may have a community of people you know available, or years of your own knowledge on the platform to apply. There's reasons you see Hondas and Vettes and RB's and Miatas and such at tracks, you can easily hand-tool repair 99.9% of it in a shed, usually with the tools and the skillset of the owner to apply to it. An i30N is not going to beat a R chassis unless it's got massive problems either. The old cars can, and still do work great. The problem is - and always has been - social media would have you believe it's simple and easy to achieve the results you see online.  People want their car to be like "one of those cool JDM cars" which is the default image people have when they think of  "cool JDM cars" You are paying 25 years of catchup R&D to achieve. Or the knowledge somebody else has to do it for you, which is big dollar restomod stuff.  The bar has been moved and every R chassis that people see/like/enjoy has 25 years of R&D thrown at it, or is owned by someone who did all that work and has that knowledge over the past 25 years. All the survivors have been progressively resto-modded the entire time. OR you slowly bring it back to how it was stock. Which is also prohibitively expensive, done for the love of it. This is what the JDM community is now. This is fine, but "Where do I start?" is either: 1) Don't 2) Take your own slow journey but you cannot compare your progress with others who have had 25 years of R&D and experience building their own cars unless you pay for it.
    • Yep, with the crazy inflation of the value of our cars these past couple of years this became a problem for me too... My solution is to transition to bikes. Everything feels so cheap compared to tracking the skyline lol
    • So, I've been a little busy on this car. I replaced the bonnet struts which is always satisfying but very confusing that nobody else on the planet seems to do this. Its just my routine first thing I do on any car I buy. The boot struts for both the tailgate and the separately opening glass window was a bastard. And, I found a fair bit of rust in the strut cavity. I filled it with rust converter and cleaned up as much of the dirt as I could. There was so much dirt. One piece of the trim was barely hanging on and so I've left it off. I'll try to get a replacement. You can see how disgusting and dirty it all was in this thread; I had to remove the little clips that hold the struts on the ball. The ones I took off had no clips and it was impossible to get them on with them in place. Fingers crossed they stay put. So, I turned my attention to the headlights, they were in a bad way and likely would stop rego. I took the headlights out and found the adjusters were all just loose. So, I fixed those and unclipped the lenses to clean them up. Couldn't believe how easy it was to take all this apart compared to the E90.   I also cleaned up the stockies which was awesome, these are super cool with lug nut covers. They're in good nic but the tyres are shot. I was going to use these for rego but in the end got a fresh pair of rubber for the 17's on the front of the car instead. The front bar of this car is from a late(r) model one. I don't think it's quite LCI but who knows. I'll need to find out. Anyway, the bar was missing the fog lights and the wiring and plugs were for the original ones so I got new plugs and some cheap fogs. I wasn't sure if missing original equipment would hamper my blue slip attempts. Had a couple of these little fellas helping out. But not Ben who got stuck behind the pool heater .... How embarressment.  I ordered new speed sensors for all corners because I knew one was out. I just got cheapies and will replace them with Bosch items when I can find Bosch items. Again, this was just for rego. Alas, it seems the blue speed sensors are not the same as the grey ones. Back they went and replacements ordered. In the end, with my new scan tool, it was just rear left that was shot. Replaced it and cleared the codes. All good now. Lastly, my aux (thermo) fan is being a bit odd. Its powering up at strange times and NOT powering up when I think it should (100C). While this can be caused by a few things, the most likely (for me) is the ambient temp sensor. Given mine reads -40.0C regardless of the temp, I figured it would be good to replace it. In the end, the sensor wiring was abysmal with (terrible) attempts made by somebody to fix it.   I fixed this all up but the sensor is only attached using pins into the wires. The plug is not there. Despite trying and trying to connect it securely it wouldn't work so a replacement sensor and plug is on the way. Oh, I also ordered a replacement piece of trim for the part missing here at the bottom. Ordered from Latvia for $70 delivered. I took a bit of a leap of faith because I didn't have the exact part number and, as usual, there were eleventy billion pieces of trim that looked to fit. Nailed it. Well, its not totally perfect but I think its more a 28 y/o car problem than a trim problem. And, as of today ..... I have bought the workshop manuals 2nd hand off a guy in tassie. 1000+ pages of E39 goodness, hopefully it helps me with the fan. I also have a new temp switch on the way incase its the problem. Stoked.
