hey guys

i am soon to be in the market for a skyline with a 30k budget in mind

i want to have a daily driver with good and responsive power and great handling

but i have a problem i dont know whether to go for a r32 gtr or a r34 gtt from what i know the neo engine in the r34 has the same stock power as the gtr but its cheaper however the gtr has better high end potential

i love the r34 and the r32 just the r32 is a older car

however u can pick either one up for under 20 k

so all you skyline owners and lovers out there what are your personal opinions and what reconmendations would u make

( i am thinking to make 350- 400 hp atw) but maybe more later one

but remain in my 30 k budget for now ( including purchase price of the car)

thanks

As a daily driven car you'd probably want to be going for the R34 GT-T... newer, more reliable being newer, much easier to find one that isnt on the verge of blowing up and so forth. You can pick up either for under $20k but you get what you pay for.

true that but the fact that it has the gtr motor and all wheel drive is pretty tempting

i mean for under 20 k i reakon ur still gettting what ur paying for and some of them are already modded so that would save some money

but i mean still its really still a very hard decision

and just for interest how much hp is considered usable power and how much power can the stock gtr gear box etc handle without having to go crazy with forged internals new gearbox and all that

also how much would it cost ( approx ) to build a 400 hp r32 gtr or r34 gtt

300kw at the wheels is pretty decent power. You are going to need to change turbo's, ecu, tune, injectors, fuel pump (depening on what it comes with), clutch (depening on what it comes with), exhaust (depening on what it comes with), to put that power down you will also need good tyres/suspension (depening on what it comes with).

Its kind of a hard power level because if you want 200-250kw at all 4 or less you could do it without having to change as much, but beyond that you are really going to need turbos and then all the supporting mods they require. Also if you plan on driving it daily and you hammer it, the stock internals probably wont last.

All I can say to you is that GTR's are NOT cheap, particularly if you have got a few mods, also if you buy a cheap example and mod it up you a really going to want a rebuild otherwise it will just blow up and with that and mods you will be looking at over $30k.

If you went for a 34 GT-T it would be cheaper and with the right turbo / ecu you could get that power but I don't know why anyone wants a car with 300kw at the rear wheels for the road... You wont be able to utilise the power.

If I were you, I would buy an s15 for about $22k (one that has decent wheels and tyres already and most have exhaust system). Then you just buy intercooler, power fc and get a decent tune and you will have just under 200rwkw in a car that weighs <1,300kg... It will be plenty fast and fun to drive and also be useable and for less than $30k.

thats my 2 cents anyway.

Bolded for truth. Theyre not easy to live with as a daily drive. I dont regret a thing, but the old girl is a 1997...R33...if ur going a GTR a 33 is your happy median. you still get a car thats not heaps old and has the coveted RB26...but it will still cost you a mint on upkeep. As any GTR does.

Yeah, if he wants the kind of power he is talkin about out of a GTR, that is a daily, AND for less than $30k.... I just dont think its a good idea.

i own an R34 GTT and havnt looked back since, i payed 20k for mine, but for 30k you can pick up a work of art. id never own another skyline bar the 34.

yerr i know i love the r34 more then any other skyline ( especially the gtr it just looks so agressive and all just the price tag is a bit of a worry) just that the twin turbo and the AWD system is soo tempting

i mean ur getting it for the same price one is a GTR and one isnt

i have been seriously considering a gtt but them put a nice kit on it ( no offence or anything) but the stock from bar on the gtt is kinda boring

oh and quick question what is the difference from a skyline r34 25 gt and a skyline gtt

thanks

Get yourself a R33 GTR :)

although the r33 is my least favorite skyline out of the r32 - r34 ( not saying its not a beautiful car just saying that i would prefer the other two over the r33)

but on that i would just like to say your r33 is beautiful compared to many i have seen just the style, look and how clean it is. you did a great job on the car.

however its not really what i am looking for as it is a bit out of my price range.

i was thinking of getting something around the 20k mark so i have a bit of dough to spend on mods etc

but dont get me wrong your car is stunningly beautiful.

I use my GTR as a daily and apart from the maintenance & fuel costs I find it easy to live with. I haven't touched the engine in mine infact it still has the compliance cat installed and I think its quick enough as a daily. If you're going to get one as a daily make sure you aim your mods that way.

Stay away from big power that you will never use on the street. You can break every speed limit in 3rd gear and it comes up pretty quick even in a stock GTR. Get some decent suspension in there and a good flowing exhaust and away you go.

If your set on 300kw then I would go the GTR over the GTT simply because its easier to make the power and the power is more usable in a GTR. Have a look in the Forced Induction Turbo Stickys for some ideas for what turbos you will need and the supporting mods people have.

For 300kw I would be going for HKS GT- SS turbos or the Garrett equivalent. I think the 2860 -9s are the closest now. Or if you think you will be looking for more power later on go for some HKS 2530s or Garrett 2860 - 5s i think they are.

out of curiousity how much would it cost to builld a 300 kw skyline gtt with the rb25det neo engine?

not including the purchase price of the car

and is it actually safe to buy a car which already has been modified?

A fair amount I would suggest especially if you pay someone to do it.

It's beyond a stage 1 tune.

Plus I'd think it would be wise to add costs for suspension, brakes, clutch (defo) at that sort of power.

I like all Skylines.

I bought a 33 GTST for a few reasons. One it was stock and clean. A stock car (assuming it has not been modded then de-modded) is more likely to not be on the verge of mechanical meltdown. Another is it's my first 'fast' car and I didn't want to spend the extra 10 k say that a good 34 GTT would cost. Maybe I'd not really enjoy it that much (wrong ;) anyway). Another reason for getting stock is that with 'only' ~130 kw at the rw's I'd be less likely to have an upset and crash etc. Not that I am a poor driver but I'm old enough to know I'm inexperienced with HPV's and it is only prudent to be like that IMHO.

I wasn't considering a 32 GTR 'cos of the power for that reason, even though I like the look...and they are a GTR. Also I needed a daily drive and was wary of the complexity which implies more servicing etc. I like the look of the 33 S2 even though some don't....I like that long(ish), lowdown, look...wide. It looks longer than it is of course, but it has that presence like say a Soarer...the long(ish) bonnet, mean, muscley, it's really only a medium sized car of course though. The inside is fairly roomy, doesn't feel cramped...feels expansive in the front seats. Yeah the 34 looks great I think also, more aggressively styled but less like an archetypal 'tough' car IMHO which is what the 33 looks like...the trade off is that the 33 is a bit more anonymous.

yerr that is true

one thing has really bugged me though see i am 6 foot 2 or 1.88 metres tall and i have some trouble with some cars due to my hieght would that be of a problem with the skyline particularly the r34 ?

what would be a power figure in a car used as a daily which is responsive and yet power ful that wouldnt cost too much to make on a r34 gtt? with that 30 k budget in mind ( including price of car) ?

and just wondering if u guys had 30 k or so would u purchase a r34 gtt and mod it up or save another 10 k or so and get a r34 gtr ? sorry if i am a bit of a hassle but its just i wish to know as much as i can before i make the purchase and end up realising it was a mistake

so any recommendations are welcome

cheers guys thanks for all the help

    • Yes...but look at the numbers. There is a tiny tiny fraction of the number of Joules available, compared to what is used/needed. Just because things are "possible" doesn't make them meaningful.
    • Thanks for taking the time to post that ! If anything changes or happens please do update us.
    • Somehow Vertimass/Oak Ridge National Labs has figured out a catalyst that can convert ethanol into C9-C10 hydrocarbons in basically a single step without ending up with a bunch of ethylene or similar waste products: https://patents.google.com/patent/WO2023224867A1/en I still don't think anything like this will keep us from needing to transition to EVs regardless along with all kinds of other electrification, but things like this will go a long way towards alleviating the problem of how to electrify things like planes. Renewable diesel is seemingly an easier problem as well, Chevron is already running refineries for the stuff and the primary feedstock is tallow and other waste fats from agriculture.
    • Ok so I have sorted everything with my uniclutch and  i can offer up a bit of feedback and some things that might help others.    I found problems with factory damper line. Weird shit and had trouble with peddle adjustment    I used this https://au.gktech.com/products/r33-gts-t-skyline-braided-clutch-line?_pos=2&_sid=22b01b9b9&_ss=r Also when adjusting peddle leave a bit of play. You can get into a over stroke condition easy.. Make sure you can push the slave forward after adjusting to confirm fluid can return to master then you will need to pump it up heaps…..not sure why but that’s how it is.    last thing the splined adapter is machined perfectly. If your input shaft is old like mine was I would put a bit of valve grinding paste on it and stroke it like a 15 year old. Just to give it a tad more clearance and to better match it to the spline.    reason is on a near flat shift I have had situation where the peddle returns a millisecond after you lift from the clutch. No slip or anything but I reckon this is due to tolerance on the spline being way tighter than stock clutch and binding for a sec. I think this will go away but also my spline was old. Box is old so I guess I should have checked better. It’s a super neat fit.    it feels light as and holds awesome without any noise
