RB25DET into a Nissan Silvia S15

Now to begin with, I'm not that mechanically minded but I do know my little bits and pieces, I'm looking at purchasing a S15 and dropping a nice RB25DET Neo into it.

I don't know what my budget will be at the moment; I will probably just buy the S15 for now, and save the money for the Rb25 to migrate safely into the S15 without any hiccups and not having the car off the road for over a fortnight.

Guys, I do need some help and need to gather some information in order for this to materialise. My plan is to purchase the S15 early next year, and have a checklist of parts that I will need to purchase in order to complete this. And once I have everything I need, I will drop the car and the parts to a garage.

At the moment I just need the information I require, and want to see if it will be worth my while and not too expensive. I would also like it to be fully engineered as well, and just as a base I want the RB25 to be stock for now.

Shell:

Well, after looking around for a rolling shell which has been undamaged, and has all the interior pieces intact, doesn't seem like I had much luck.

Now, after looking at carsales I'm willing to buy a S15 Spec S for about $14,000.

Engine and Gearbox:

What's the likelihood of a Jap Engine store to purchase / trade-in the current SR20 out of the Spec S for a RB25DET Neo from a R34? And how much do you reckon I will get for the SR20?

I will not settle for anything less than an RB25DET Neo from a R34.

What sort of mods will be needed in order to drop this into the S15? Custom engine mounts etc?

Gearbox, what will be needed to drop this straight in, any major customisation needed?

Price Estimate?

Conclusion:

At the moment, all I'm concerned about is the engine and the gearbox to be dropped into the S15. Anything interior / exterior wise I will fix up as soon as I know the engine is in and definitely running. At the moment im just researching and looking for information, it would also help if someone knows of anyone whos already done this conversion.

you should go to nissansilvia.com and ask there. they would have more info on whats required to but a real engine in a silvia.

little bit of free advise, dont waste your money.....

if u really wana know what needs to be done, pm me, ive been there done that... happy i didnt. the sr20 in my s15 has run a 10.6 at 138mph on et streets, what more do u want.

silvias are for sliding and a nice street car, u want a performance car, go buy a gtr, and 26/30 it..

east coast customs have a kit to put a 1jz or 2jz in any silvia platform. i'm lead to believe that the JZ series are lighter than the RB as well, apparently better for weight distribution.

but like DEN001 said, why rip out a perfectly good SR20??

factor in labour, motor, conversion, gearbox, you'd be talking over 10K easily, unless you DIY'd it. then that's before you slap a big turbo and all the other tasties on. so for in excess of 10-16K you'd have a tough as nails SR20, with half as much effort, and more longevity....

rb into s series equals handling shite..... no matter your budget.... the SR will always handle better.

Don't worry about the extra weight of an RB. Silvias with RB's are tried and proven...

Just look at Kuroi in his s13 RB26 and now he's been using the 2jz s13! the 2jz is about 40kg heavier than a RB.

If everyone was so worried about weight distribution then go a CA18 because they are allot lighter than the sr20.

Stick your battery in the boot get some alloy brakes, glass hood and guards and you start to peel off some weight you had gained.

Well, after reading some of the info, i'm still like minded in building it.

I dont really mind about the power of it.

The main reason i would like the RB25DET in the S15 is because after having a RB25DE and driven a R34 with the RB25DET i cant justify myself in driving with a SR20 i just love the RB too much.

Power gains, like i said im not looking at gaining any power at the moment, that will all come later down the track when i get sick of the RB.

buddy an s15 is a great car as it is. u really have no reason to change the motor around.

the bolt ons for a sr20 are endless and they are actually very fun and comfortable to drive .

if ur so dead set on having a neo motor buy a gtt and be done with it

JZ's are definitely not lighter than RB's. You know how everyone says JZ's are over engineered? Well that definitely comes at a price, they're build like truck engines and aren't far off in weight. Not that the RB is much lighter, around 50Kg heavier tops.

IMO, go with a VQ30DET. Quite a bit of a headache, but an RB will be as well... VQ's are apparently pretty on par with SR's weight wise, and should sit a little further back being only 3cyl long. More torque than an RB too...

RB25DET = ~228Kg Dry with turbo, manifolds etc

RB25DET 5 speed = ~90Kg Dry

SR20DET = ~150Kg Dry with turbo, manifolds etc

SR20DET 5 speed = ~72Kg Dry

S15 6 speed should be a little more

And some comparison engines with turbos/manifolds

2JZGTE = ~268Kg

VH45DE = ~230Kg

CA18DET = ~130Kg

VQ30DET = ~162Kg

LS1 = ~174KG

i had a 300hp sr20 and ive been in 350hp sr20 i pulled my sr out of my s15 and done the 26 conversion well worth so much fun to drive it ive got a semi built engine and all aftermarket bits ecu injectors turbos ect... and i done the conversion for just under 14g and 400rwhp
