Few Questions :)

Recommended Posts

Hey, ive been reading these forums in the past few months, trying to learn as much as i can as im about to get my first car, i have around 10g to spend.

I want to get either a r32, r33 or s14a (the one with the good looking front)

the few questions are:

1. which of the 3 would be the best? (the only downside about the s14 is its 4 seater)

2. should it be better to get boost first off?

3. what happends if the cops pull me over and find out its turbo?

4. problems to worry about car wise

5. is the rb20det that bad compared to the rb25det and sr20det?

whats a few ways to make keep your car unattractive from police?

thanks heaps if you can help me out :D

or if you have any other nice import turbo cars that would be a good first car?

i am biased towards the skylines, so if you want a bit more power and plan to mod it a bit go the r33, its newer but its also more common.. the r32 is an awesome little car i had one for a few years and loved it, the rb20 is not as powerful obviously but in the drivers seat its not that bad, you can't tell.

when i bought mine i had almost a year left on my P's and i only had an auto License (the car was manual).. the best thing to do is try get one that looks stock.. stock exhaust, stock wheels etc.. then just drive normal and don't go thrashing it everywhere, i never got pulled over.

I don't know what happens if they pull you over and find out its turbo.. that law wasn't out.

same problems with most second hand cars.. make sure its in good condition and been treated well, get it checked especially because they are getting on in age.

its pretty much personal opinion with which car you should get.. i know i'm in the same boat and its hard but everyone will tell you something different, so get what YOU like the most..

Its a TOUGH choice to make, but which ever one you choose, you'll love it

i recon the r32 gts-t is the way to go (im biased)

great looking (better than the 33), rb20 loves to be thrashed and when it lets go you can drop in a 25, the cheapest of those options as well

if your p plater maybe a cheap non turbo 32 would be the go and spend your money building up an engine for when you can drive a turbo car

the biggest prob with rolling round in a turbo car is with the insurance company when they find out your in the wrong

im going to be honest...if you choose to buy a turbo on your p's...your an idiot, the law is there for a reason. just buy a non-turbo car until you are off your p's and do things the right way, also, as an above post had said, insurance is going to be a BIG problem.

i know you probally think turbo's are "fulli hektik bro"...but it isn't so cool after you get pulled over and lose your licence for a long time.

Im not trying to have a go at you mate, but do things the right way. im on p's myself and everytime i see a p plater driving a turbo, i hope they get busted before they kill someone or themself.

Just make the SMART choice!

EDIT: GO R34! :D

yes driving a turbo car on your p's is bad, mmmkay.

however if you decide to ignore all the advice given here about not driving a turbo car, then go the 33. they will make boost the earliest (full boost by well under 3000rpm on stock turbo), are quicker than a 32, more modern looking interior and exterior, not as old and nicer to drive. i have driven and been in a few different imports (r32, r33, ceffy, 180sx with both CA and SR) and i must say that the least impressive were the ceffy and r32, both being powered by turbo rb20s. the r32 had a bigger turbo, pfc, etc and was making 5hp less than my stock turbo and ecu r33, but felt much less powerful. there was nothing below about 4000rpm. then he put a smaller turbo on to get a bit more response and it was better but would still get beaten by a stock rb25 with the boost wound up a bit. the ceffy was stock except for a catback exhaust, and when we went down to willowbank my 3.5L v6 magna with just catback exhaust was quicker, as was an EA falcon, LOL.

silvia/200sx would be my second pick after the 33. they are nice light little cars with decent power and torque. they handle very well. even the old s13 with a ca18 in it aren't bad cars. i would own a CA powered s13 over a r32.

i just don't really like the r32. interior reminds me of a VN commodore, and they aren't exactly powerful. even though they have more power than a s13 sr20 (only about 7kw), they put out less torque and are in a car that weighs 100kg more. sure you can drop a rb25 into a 32, but you might as well just buy a r33 to start with. they are cheaper due to being more common, and already have the better motor, plus bigger brakes, etc.

i wanted to get a turbo, not because its fully sikk. but because they only go for like a grand more than a non turbo, and also i could do work on the engine, so that when i get off p's i would have a car already turbo with a few upgrades, but also id know how to handle its thats all.

so your saying its really not worth getting a turbo?

thanks for all the imput so far

i wanted to go the r34, but i dont want a 4 door ;P

Pretty sure they're all 4 seaters, although I haven't been in an old r32 in sometime.

The r33 is the superior car out of the 3 hands down.

If you do get a 32 get the gtr grill and bonnet they really look like ass with that Daewoo espero type bonnet.

Then you'll be thinking the rb20 is a tad wheezy so why not drop in an rb25, engineered ofcourse + brakes ect ect

Mmmm result = if it wasn't so ugly and dated it'd almost be as good as a stock r33 but @ twice the $$$$$

The r33 was not a step backwards in engineering or styling, it was a big step up.

Reminds me of a guy that will argue till the death that the eh holden is the best car ever produced bar none, totally deluded.. everything that came after has been an advance the same goes for Nissans... newer = better unless a raw old banger is what gets your juices flowing go the latest car you can afford.

Then again, the s1 r33 with no a/bags, body kit or bling and hicas removed.. when set up correctly is quiet a nimble, fun car and probably the logical choice for a cheap semi-serious fun car base being lighter and cheaper to repair ect.

1. 32

2. Its the easiest in terms of cost/time vs performance gain

3. You're f**ked. Also even though an insurance company will take your money, if you crash they will promptly advise you that you are not actually insured... so probably don't want to hit anything... ever.... or depending on what you hit, you could be in debt for a VERY long time.

4. RB20's are extremely tough.. look after it and there are no real issues other than usual wear and tear.

5. Its very strong and makes decent power. The other two make more but meh...

whats a few ways to make keep your car unattractive from police?

Sell it and buy a corolla. Its a skyline... nothing you do will make it 'unattractive' from police. You are a target if you are in a skyline

If you buy a turbo car on P's and it comes back to bite you (which it inevitably will), nobody will feel sorry for you, but that is your mistake to make.

buy a honda ..vtecs are awesome ...its like having a turbo without having a turbo, not to mention they are nimble as an alley cat, 10k will get you a hot crx or a good integra or prelude

My missus has an 04 accord v6, great fuel ec.(melb to adelaide on 1 tank of petrol) it has the nastiest sting when you boot it..and looks like something my grandma would drive...and ive been in crxs that are just plain scary in tight streets

the only problem is they are all FWD...GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR......xcept the s2000 of course

they finally make a RWD car and forget to put a roof on it...GRRRRRRRRRRR

Nah fk hyundai's!!! I wouldn't take an excel if it was free.

Buy a Toyota starlet. $3-4k, really reliable, cheap to run and miles better than a hyundai
