i'd call the local cops and ask them. my understanding of it was that once that yellow sticker is on it, anyone is aloud to come and take it, and they are the legal new owner. dont know all the details but have heard of it being done.

its not stealing because the propper authority make a 'reasonable' attempt to contact the owner, if they cant, or the owner does nothing then they can tow it. maybe the council just let anyone take it to save them the money or towing it?

i nearly did the same thing not long ago, a mint condition mid 90's camry was on the side of the road with one of those stickers, but i drove passed it once more and it was gone, so never investigated it further

I guess best ask the council/cops.

Just out of curiosity does it still have the number plates?

'

Nah, no plates.

Called council anyway, they will tow it to wrecker, keep for 30 days, then if no one claims, turns over to wrecker.

Spewing cause it's a mint car and it will be sold for parts or someone who works there is gonna take it >_<

Oh well, no harm in trying hey.

Register with the Local Council that... >_<"I'm the new wrecker in town & I'll even tow it away for ya!"

i smashed the gearbox in my swift gti once, couldnt drive it anywhere, the plan was to leave it in the quiet neighbourhood street that it failed in for a few days til i got a chance to organise a workshop and a towey, after about 4 or 5 days i woke up to 2 cop cars full of police banging on my front door wanting to know if it was my car, and did i know where it was, and why had it been there for so long etc etc. f**kin massive overkill on their behalf, but i guess if it had of been stolen, then i would have been very thankful for their help.

on the flipside to the above post, my mates r31 blew a gearbox in a quiet road. My mate was a total tightass and wouldn't repair the skyline. he decided to leave it in the hope that someone would just take it. he took the plates back to the rta and left the car there. It only lasted about 3 months and one day we did a drive-by to see if it was still there, only to find it gone!

It's a bit dodgy, your best bet is to try find the owner, but someone else might take it before you do!

The council will have someone to talk to, probably Parks and Gardens.

My story:

One of my boys borrowed the old Falcon when he was moving to Griffith from QLD.

She got stolen pretty quickly and he notified the police, got a "case number" the whole bit.

No news for 2-months, my son used to bike to the copshop daily and ask how it was going and he was told it would turn up in a canal any old day.

Next I get a bill from Griffith City Council for tow/storage of my vehicle.

Turns out Parks and Gardens could trace my car via the VIN (as it was completely stripped) but not the NSW police.

I handed the whole thing over to the insurer, but they disputed my replacement value, even had a private investigator come and chat for a couple of hours.

Then they lost it, stolen from their impound lot.

I received all my $$$$$.

Case closed.
