Hey guys,

Just curious to see what others are finding in the way of rotor wear.

I've got S15 calipers and slotted rotors (from midnight mods) with the QFM race spec pad (the 700 degree ones) on an S13.

At the back it's just standard S13 calipers with the same slotted rotors and pads.

Up front I'm noticing that after only 2 track days, one drift day, and one DECA that I'm getting quite a groove in the top edge of the rotor right near the lip.

I don't want to chew threw front rotors like that and it feels like a reasonable groove already so are others experiencing this also? Is this just a bi-product of the harsher pads and hard braking from speed? Just seems to be a lot of pressure being applied to the outside edge of the rotor. Both fronts are the same and both sides of each front rotor are also the same and I'm confident the pads are in the right way.

Thoughts?

Cheers

umm yep, basically.

high performance pads are hard on rotors, its that simple. you can get really agressive pads (i haven't used the qfms you mentioned) that provide great performance under track conditions with marginal or undersized calipers - but you don't get anything for free....pads like this rip into rotors.

well....groove in itself is not a problem if the wear is even on both sides of the disc, even across the disc, and even across the pad (not tapered for leading to trailing edge of the pad). and as long as the thickness of the disc is above minimum.

if you are getting uneven wear of the disc or pad there are a heap of things to look at. caliper pistons, disc centreing, wheel bearings etc etc

if it is just working hard you can either be happy you are getting good performance out of the current setup, or upgrade to something bigger. I reckon the d4/d2/ksport 8 piston kits are a great upgrade for $2k.

Hmm, should deffo be above minimum thickness as they are only a few months old and have only done 400k's or so, 95% of that at events though.

I'd have to take the caliper off and inspect the pads to get a clear idea of how the pads are wearing. At this stage all I can see is the rotor face and a nice groove worn in near the outside edge, giving the rotor a noticeable lip.

I'm also talking to the place I bought the pads from, a rally team up QLD way qho distribute the QFM's and he doesn't think it sounds right.

Some more investigation is required.

FYI you can also follow this convo over at NS here Duncan.

gslrallysport is the distributor who sold me the pads so you can follow what's going on.

I have been using QFM A1RM pads for about 6 months on my road car whihc has done a few track days. I have had less rotor wear than with the ultimates I was using.

There was on report about bad wear using those pads on a Z32 for road use and it was tracked down to the pads running too cool because of some ducting was keeping them from getting up to Temp.

Plugging the ducting up cured the problem.

I'll pipe up and say I'm super happy with my combo of DBA 2 piece slotted front rotors and Ferodo 3000 pads.

Over 3000 competetive kays on one pad set, and only very light skims of the rotors twice. Skimming isn't from wear but rather from warping.

Doesn't get much cheaper than that I don't think.

That's good considering 3000 pads. I have 2500's on RDA's and they're going well. My last set of endless killed my DBA's but I got my money's worth out of em.

Chiming in with my setup....

S13 with QFM A1RM's

Front - R33 GTST calipers over DBA 4000's

Rear - S13 calipers over DBA 4000's

Rotor wear is what i would expect after about 5-6 track days... bit of a lip but nothing to stress about! Braking... well it does the job, but would love a bigger setup....

I wouldnt stress too much Dan. As Duncan said, just check the rotors look ok and have 'even' wear.......
