Just throwing up a question of interest, we all are adviced to do the timing belts every 100k just wondering if anyone out there has gone the full distance with there stock timing belt until it snapped or had a problem due to the tensioner bolt , interested to know how long they actually lasted

every 100,000km or 7 years is the general rule. The rubber degrades over time no matter how low kilometres you do. Most people here have probably had their skylines reach the 100,000km milestone with the factory fitted timing belt, 89 GTR for example that changed it this year.. that's coming 20 years old.

Timing belt snaps and the valves smash into the piston, and takes a a piston or 2 with it.

Tensioner/idler pulley seizes, the belt is locked in place and valves are smashed into the piston, and a takes a piston or 2 with it.

i changed my belt at 100k but didnt do the tensioner/idler pulley and ive gone 35000 since i changed im planning to change it at prob 180k wondering if itll last

I had one fail years ago - previous owner did the timing belt, didnt to the tensioners i found out afterwards...

This was on a 120,000 km RB20.

Do not risk it, its stated as a required item for a reason.

agree dont be tight arse, dodgy/botched/skimp = rebuild of motor

im on my 2nd timing belt, 216,000km

216,000km!!!!!! f**k me. Hows the car holding up outta curiosity???? mines now got 85000km and im thinking shes gettin on!....

Did mine at 130,000km, belt was very loose and brittle by the looks/feel of it. You must change tensioner and idler as they are designed to go at around the same time. I should have done service at 100,000km. I suppose I was just lucky.

by the sounds of it most people have changed both, the only reason i left out the tensioner and idler were when I inspected the bearings at the time they were fine , hrmm wishing I had of just changed them

i did a service on a r32 gtst and it had 190000 on it and the idle pulley had been broken for at least 10000 acording to the owner and the belt still hadnt let go for some reason i couldnt believe it

hmm, do you guys reccommend oem belt or the gates belt? also where can i pick up the tensioner and pulley from?

also is there any difference to r32/33/34 /rb20/25/26 series 1 and 2 etc?? looking to pick up these parts soon

oh and part numbers too!

The genuine oem Nissan and Gates belts are about the same price, I chose to go with the genuine belt as Nissan's genuine parts are really good, only downside to the Gates belt that I know of is that they are rather noisy until they are run-in
