Hey guys, just got a 34 and been shopping around for insurance and WOW is it expensive...

im wondering what all you guys are through and if you wouldnt mind saying how much you're paying??

important info is that im only 17 so thats why its even more expensive... anyone know any cheaper places?? or would it be just better off going 3rd party fire & theft (even though i'd prefer obviously comprehensive)

I got a quote from Just Car Insurance... $475 for 3rd party fire n theft or 2,256 for full comprehensive with a $1,700 excesss fee.. this seems to be the cheapest as others such as NRMA want to charge 4k + for comprehensive ;)

hey mate, not a P plater (loooonnggggg past those days ;)) but i thought i'd throw my 2 cents in

Just Car is prob the only place worth going through till you get old enough to shop around (even then when you're 25 insurance will still a case of bend over and lube up cuz it's aiming for penetration)

a little over 2g's isnt too bad for a 17 yr old, yes it sux for you but, atleast if you were to go full comp, your covered regardless of who's at fault. althought 3rd party is fine, its the added benefit of having full comp that if you did f**k up and hit something/someone else, you're still covered. with 3rd party you'll be hoping its someone elses fault.

i wouldnt bother going with nrma, ammi, suncorp etc etc, they'll just be out to make you pay big time for your insurance then pay big time for a claim.

just to give you an idea, I'm with Just Car, 26 yrs old and i pay around 1200 a yr full comp (so even after X amount of yrs holding a rating 1, its only slightly discounted by my age) but thats for a R33 turbo. the good thing about Just Car now is those premium adjust, i only pay about 400-500 a yr, but if i make a claim then i get reamed (1500 excess)

so although it's good to shop around for car insurance, I'd say stick with JustCar as they'd prob be the cheapest for you (full comp wise anyways)

Good Luck

yeah im with justcar too - was fully insured for the first year or two (modified R32 GTST) and it was just over a grand (im a bit older than you though )

since then have gone down to 3rd party fire and theft only - not sure how much im paying now..

ahh okay thanks guys.. yeah the 2g is a bit of a kick in the backside i cant come up with that money now so i might have to go for 3rd party for the time being and upgrade to comprehensive when i have more money

they charge so much for insurance aye.. and yeah i was surprised that all these places are charging even 1k for 3rd party and just car is ony charging $475 for 3rd party.. much much cheaper!!

so i think ill jus stick to justcar and bite my lip and save save save LOL

cheers

Yeah dood I was in the same situation as you, I bought full comprehensive insurance and I regreted it, just take 3rd party, because even if you smash your car chances are it will cost you less to fix it then if you were paying full comprehensive. It's worth the risk to only get 3rd party and try to get fire & theft as well.

Full comp is expensive as a P plater with an import get used to it is the only thing you can do. I would save the money as quickly as possible and get full comp insurance because nobody knows when the shit will hit the fan and if its your fault and other cars are involved you will end up out of pocket a lot more than the 2k premium. If you've spent a decent sum of money on the car I can't see why anybody would take the risk of just having 3rd party insurance.

In future when your're looking for a car make sure you factor in the insurance costs before you purchase it because if you can't afford normal day to day running costs like insurance then you can't really afford the car.

I've just gone on to my opens and I pay $2800ish for fully comp each year with a 3kish excess. Its a lot different to yours though since I have a GTR which pretty much means I get raped on everything. Worth it though.

Hmm Alex yeah i see your point and i also see Beelzebub's point aswell....

i wouldnt like to think i would be in the fault with an accident but you never know... but yeah fair enough my parents said the same i cant really afford this car if i cant even afford the bare necessities for it lol.. then again wat teenager listens these days until he or she learns there lesson :)

anyway i might have to take a personal loan off the parents do alot of beegging and house work see if they can chip in some and ill have to pay them back.. if not its 3rd party for the time being :)

I dont know if anyone mentioned this above and I cbf reading it all but have you looked at increasing your excess to lower your premium?

Thats what I did with Justcars

good way to lower the premium but then your doubly f**ked when you have an accident and you have to pay out 4 or 5 grand excess. Especially if the agreed value of the car is at the lower end of the scale which Just Cars do a lot. So you have an accident the car gets written off and you get your payment of 18k? Minus the 4-5k excess and now you've got to find a replacement car for probably 4 or 5 grand less than what you originally paid for.

Try n scrape as much cash as you can together for an uh-oh fund that way when the shit hits the fan you've got something to fall back on. I play poker to pay for stuff wages won't might be an idea. You need to be a semi competent player with a bankroll to beat the casino though. Doesn't take long to learn it though :)

Yeah I spose if the cars only worth 5k its prob not worth it, Myself on the other hand owning a "fully sick" R34 dont have that problem :)

ps Colin dont encourage under 18's to gamble :O

the "just car" insurence when i was 18 with my 32 gts-t is only $100 more expensive then it is now being 21 with a 32 gtr(full comp) so your insurence wont be getting any cheaper any time soon

Comparing insurance with a 32 gtst and a 32 GTR isn't exactly a fair comparison though. GTR initial price is a lot more and they are considered a higher risk by insurance companies for theft accidents etc. I'd say if you still had the gtst you would be saving a lot more.

Not that it matters anyway, you can't crash the car if it doesn't run  When is it back on the road Ben?

ive been with just cars from the word go,

when i was 18 and i insured my modified r32 it was 1,800ish

when i was 19 and re-insured it, it came to about 1,400ish

and now i am 20 and just insured my more modified 180 it came to 1,350

but hey ive had two wankers rear end me when i had my 32 and justcars helped me out, so in the end it was worth it

This is not true, third party will cover other vehicles even if its a multi-vehicle accident, they just don't cover your car, so it is worth getting third party, definitely not worth getting comprehensive. Trust me, I've been through the same situation, you better of leaving money slowly on the side in case you have an accident, there are a crap load of parts for skylines out there. Even if you totally write of your car you can strip it and sell it. Just get 3rd party and be happy with it, honestly full comprehensive is not worth the financial burden.

i got rear ended - 6k damage, after i had only paid insurance for 18months (not my fault)

i got rear ended - write off - after i had only paid about 21months of insurance (not my fault)

car was insured for agreed value not market value - so i just took the pay out

each to their own, but i believe if you cant afford to insure it you cant afford the car period, its simply not worth it

Which is exactly what I said. If your in an accident with another vehicle and your car gets written off then you don't get a pay out. So you don't have a car anymore and any money that you would recover from stripping shit off it and selling wouldn't come close to buying a similar car.

So your suggestion is for him to put money to the side in case he crashes the car etc. So you put away the money you would other spend on insurance every month and what do you have at the end of the year? Your yearly insurance premium. Which would never cover the purchase of another car or even most of the repairs if you have a serious accident. Sure if you have a small prang you can fix it yourself but you don't buy insurance to claim on it everytime you reverse into a poll etc you have it for the worse case scenario which is pretty easy to come by with the amount of f**kwits on the road these days.

If the car was a 5 grand heap of shit I would go along with the 3rd party deal but its not. 34 GTs are going for 15 - 20k these days which is a decent chunk of cash especially for a p plater.

Here's a scenario for you. I was driving my 33 GTST home from work one night. Its about 7 oclock and its dark. A kangaroo jumped out in front of the car and I cleaned it up at about 100km/h. Lost control of the car and ended up in the ditch at the side of the road. Damage done to the car was $6500 worth and repairable. My excess was $1500. I paid the excess and they fixed my car good as new. If I had 3rd party insurance I probably would have saved about $1500 on my premium that year but I also would have had to spend $5-6000 repairing my car.

So to break it down for you.

Full Comp - $2000

Excess - $1500

Total Cost of Damage to Car $6500

So it ended up costing me $3500 to have $6500 worth of work done. Or..

3rd Party - $500

Money saved from 3rd Party - $1500

Total Cost of Damage to Car $6500

So you end up with a total cost of $7000 and you managed to save $1500 from going 3rd party. And now have to put an additional $5500 towards getting the car back on the road.

Moral of the story is if your going to spend a bit of money on the car its worth spending the additional money protecting the car.

I should really do some work now...

That's true, but you just pointing out a specific case that might or may not happen, you could get killed in your car but you don't stop driving. I paid 12K in insurance the car was worth 19K I had one accident which was 3500 insurance payed for plus I had to pay a 1700 excess. To me its not worth it, that's my opinion, but obviously this is just my opinion.
