i just finished my 2years in the army and im currently a 20yo international student in perth and im gettin my P's soon. Do you think its a good idea to have a skyline for a first car? Whats the diff between a rear wheel drive and four wheel drive?

Is it better to buy my car from private sellers or dealers?

Thanks in advance!

Hello and welcome.

for a first car a skyline is awsome.depends on how much dollars you have. you can pik up a nice R32 GTST for arounr 15 - 18 grand.

They also come in 4WD ( GTS4 Version , also turbo ).

but the normal GTST is RWD. the only differnce i would say is 4WD would be a bit faster and would handle better , but cant do burnout :P . and the RWD would be more dangerous , unstable in the wet i suppose. but its all up to personal preffernce and also comes down to the $$.

Thanks, hope this helpd

Hi xsoulx, welcome to aust and SAU.

I highly recommend you go out and test drive a few cars. At the end of the day, what one person thinks is awesome, another may think is average.

Rearwheel drive: only the back wheels are driven by the engine

fourwheeldrive: all 4 wheels are driven. with the attesa (nissan 4wd system) they are not constant 4wd, like the subaru are. the 4wd comes on when slip is noticed on the back wheels by a computer.

4wd generally will mean you can get off the mark quicker when taking off, also gives you a pretty big advantage in the wet, and was where the GTRs really came home when they competed in the touring car championships here is aust.

Skylines are great cars for all people. As with all people who are just starting to drive, know your limits, and dont think you are Micheal schumaker just because you have got your liscence for a few months and you should be fine. Its the driver that makes a car dangerous, not the car.

As for buying, make sure you get the car checked out thoroughly before you put a deposit down if you are buying private, and if you are buying from a yard, make sure they have aftersales backup and service.

You get more car for less when you buy private, but you can get good backup and piece of mind from business - they choice is yours.

4WD is faster how exactly?

in the wet and off the mark im imagining :)

soul, brother, theres no "good" or "bad" time to buy any type of car. if you can afford it - buy a fast european car! porsche 911, e46 M3, ferrari 355...whatever!!! you only live once dude :) the only reason why im not driving one is because i can't afford one :) so i drive fast japanese cars instead - which are cheaper :)

gets the power to all 4 wheels - 4 wheels pushing the car forward instead of 2 - faster off the line. that and the 4wd means GTR -->twin turbo --> more power

I think you need to learn more about how cars work. Not to mention why exactly a GTR has more power than a GTS-t. (hint: it's not specifically because it has an extra turbo)

hey gents, settle down, we've all had to learn these things at some time.

And for the newer members posting here, please keep in mind, if you are not *certain* of something...don't post as though it is fact. Other ppl may take what you say as gospel...

I don't have a problem at all with people that don't know stuff. I am more than willing to give advice and help where needed, in fact I like helping people :) But you covered what I have a problem with in your second paragraph - if I'm not sure of something I'll either say I'm not sure or say nothing at all. I don't go around saying things as fact that are obviously incorrect.

One thing that hasn't been mentioned here is that a person on P Plates is banned from driving a GTR by the RTA, hence the reason I bought my GTR at 21. This is the case in VIC, cannot comment for WA. You can ask the RTA to fax you a list of the 'banned' cars list.

But bottom line is that it's only illegal if you get caught and at a guess 2% of traffic cops could tell the diff between GTR / GTST. So go the R! U wont regret it.

    • Hi All, I'm based in Sydney and want to get hold of 4 stock R34 GTT wheel caps as pictured. Cheers
    • Haha im flattered! Although my poor boat is collecting dust in the garage, as it hasn’t been driven in like 6 months. I forgot the to put the trickle charger on too, so the battery is likely toast now.. I have the frenchys kit. It is fantastic. My only gripe was that the hard lines from the firewall needed some tweaking, however, this was mainly due to my specific turbo and dump combo. The weight and size packaging is much nicer too. I think I have some pics on my build thread somewhere.. my justification for the kit was more “why not” I had gone to the trouble to modernise just about every other part of the car..
    • Actually, ethanol has probably never been cheaper, on a tax free basis, than petrol. With fuel excise being what it is, and only being levied on the hydocarbon component, not the ethanol component, and ethanol for non-drinking purposes not being subject to liquor excise - E85 was cheaper, but not because the combustible liquid itself was particularly cheaper.
    • Maybe? If changing the cat to a higher flowing cat, caused the turbo to spool more quickly, and those areas of the map had not been tuned for the boost level it is now seeing, then yes you would need a re-tune. How dangerous it is running without the updated tune would depend on how far out the tune is with the now higher boost levels, how the engine protection has been setup, is the ECU compensating with a wideband sensor, is the boost control closed loop blah blah million other things... But yeah having said that, I wouldn't be surprised if changing out the cat for a high flow, in say a full 3" exhaust, made no noticeable difference at all.
    • Ah yep. I asked a auto electrician about getting a cheap rebuilt alternator vs a new one. He also said he used to it back in the day but it ended up costing similar to what a new one would and recommended getting a new one,.
