Help Choosing Turbo For Rb20 With Gtr Cams, Pocket Port Head, Race Bearings, Extended Sump Etc

Recommended Posts

g'day i was just after some opinions on what turbo i should run. i have an rb20det with gtr cams, pocket ported head, race bearings, etc. the previous owner of the engine was running a GT30/40R with a .63 exhaust housing (238kw on 18psi, dyno sheet attached) and he said if you are using your car for more street use i recommend a disco patoto up to a GT30/71R with a .63 rear. i am pretty keen on the gt3071r with the 60mm turbine and t3 flange .63 rear as i have heard bad things about the 56.5mm turbine version. any help would be much appreciated. Cheers Jonno

What manifold are you running? I honestly believe you cant go past a TD06 on an RB20. No other turbo seems to give them 250-260rwkws with far better drivability then in the graph you posted. My car on a similar Mainline dyno made 244 or something with less boost then i run these days.

If you have to stick with a T3 flanges turbo then either then the 3071 makes the most sense

18psi comes in at over 5500rpm and makes peak power north of 8,000rpm! Holy shit.

As a comparison my RB20 (old redtop) makes the same power at about 20psi but its all in before 4,000rpm and hits peak power at 6,000rpm. Its never seen 8,000rpm as the limiter is set at 7,000rpm. Turbo is the factory fitted dinosaur spec T3/T4.

At 4500rpm your car makes 60rwkw where mine and other cars with say the TD06 fitted have already hit 200rwkw.

I dare say the tuner could of brought your boost in a lot earlier with a .63 hot side but the 30/40 compressor may of gone into surge?.

Roy-What manifold are you running? = top mount with t3 flange.

FATGTS-R-I dare say the tuner could of brought your boost in a lot earlier with a .63 hot side but the 30/40 compressor may of gone into surge?. = yeah it was is a race car so i'd say he wanted the power up in the high revs, me i want reponse and drivability for drift/street.

so i want something capable of 220kw-250kw+ with t3 flange for me rb20. now that i have said that is it is easier to change the flange on the manifold then find a t3 flanged turbo.

where can i find a td06 for pricing??

Cheers jonno

have a look at the hypergear turbos. they have been having some good results for very cheap prices. $1000 will get you a bolt on turbo that will do the same power at far less rpm. cheers!

how would a split pulse 3071 setup go compared to your setup Troy?

No idea. Cant be too bad a thing though, other then the fact that the manifold, twin gates and turbo make it all pretty expensive

around 6k i think... similar money to a brand new trust/greddy kit isnt it?

err I think on your dyno sheet its reaching 235KPA. Cover that to psi this cars running like 35psi of boost. Thats like crazy amount of boost for that sort of power if I did my convertion right.

the GT3540R is the current GT3582R there is no way a GT3071R can match its flow.

I think that is an absolute pressure rating so subtract 1bar/101kPa from it and you are closer to the mark.

A full TD06 setup is going to be expensive new, better of grabbing a 6boost manifold for $1000, a gate for $600 and a turbo for 2k. That money buys you a TD06, 3071 or anything else you want to try, maybe a 2871R or something that all the Datta boys run on SR20s,

Not sure how good these 6boost manifolds are with regards to this sort of setup, i have read good things and will hopefully know soon enough when i throw mine on

You might want to check to make sure engine, cam timing and etc are correct. with a GT3040 at 235kpa (1.41 bar?) you should seeing close to 270rwkws or more.

This is my record with Benji's RB20det engine using a TR43 turbo running 21psi made 242rwkws. This turbo is in very similar spec as a GT3076 52T in a .63 housing, 38mm externally gated. Smaller turbo, more power, using similar boost with better response on a less modified engine.

i thought these turbos were only safe to 20psi what about a tr43i on my modded rb20 when will boost come on and hit full

Was reading threw much older threads on the gtr cams in the 20 and a million ppl say it does not work, and their has not been anything recent on this topic.

You are certain your engine has these ?

can anyone else confirm they work ?

Sorry to hijack ya thread.

the rate at wich the gtr cams lift is to high for the rb20's hydraulic lifters. it will not work. the actual amount of lift would be fine and the duration should be ok but not with hte stock lifters. if you went solid lifters it would work. its been dont 100's of times.
