Buy Gtr Or Dont Buy Gtr

Well i recently walked into some money and im thinking of buying a gtr there is a r33 gtr for 17k

but i think somethings fishy about it so im looking at 32 gtrs under 17k

problem is im 17 and im on my p's and well as some of you

may know i got caught speeding the other day and now my license is extended till im 20

i really do want a GTR but im not sure if it is the right way to go?

now at 17 we all think we are king and are good drivers

i think and i know im a good driver and for 1 year and a half i have not had any accidents or close encounters

can anyone with a GTR please tell me if i am ready to drive a gtr and also are under 17k GTRs going to break?

some of them are now nearly 20 years old and is the sump a big problem?

any gtr under 20g would be pretty dodgy and would probly need u to spend a fair amount of money on it coz ull be constantly finding little problems with it and gtrs are not cheap to run and maintain properly.

also with u being 17 your not aloud to drive 1 if im correct

Firstly, I would like to stand by Terry and Chris by reiterating dont get a GT-R straight up.

Start out with something simple - a corolla, a levin, a laser - so you can learn how to (1) maintain a car (this is massive); (2) learn how to drive properly and with confidence; (3) learn the mechanics of a car; and (4) deal with cops.

You don't want to buy a GT-R first up and get into an accident, get booked because you drive a GT-R and gave the cop attitude, or drive a car with engine damage that someone else would have otherwise diagnosed a problem (does that make sense?).

There are plenty more things to consider but I think most people would recommend NOT buying a GT-R as soon as you get your licence back. Start out with something simple, then move on to a single turbo, then hit the GT-R.

Another for not buying a GTR.

Coming into money, then spending it all on a GTR isnt ideal. Chances are itl break, then you have no money, and a broken GTR.

I wanted a Skyline my whole life. But started small, Corollas etc, moved up to VTEC Hondas, then an ITR, THEN finally, after 8 years, i decided to take the plunge and get something with a bit of go, and got myself a Skyline.

In the time of owning the ITR i got right into track racing and stuff, so i feel that gave me alot of knowledge about car control and what not. But even saying that, moving onto the RWD Turbo was a big step, and alot changes!

Waiting was a good plan IMHO. Not saying wait that long, but getting a car like that straight up isnt ideal.

Even you saying that you havnt had any accidents or close encounters doesnt make you a good driver you know. My dad didnt have an accident in 35 years, but i still think he sucks ahaha

is this gonna be your only car? if it is then id suggest definitely look elsewhere; i sold a beema to buy an r34 gtr and within a year i had to re-buy my beema and a getz to commute.

gtr's arent dangerous to drive with light mods, but they definitely are fragile and when they break, part are easy to find but cost a bit, not as much as euro car parts but it all adds up.

were not dealing with the gts or gtt here as they are sports cars which can be driven daily, the gtr is and always will be a racer.

If you are looking at $17k ones, as good as they may appear, they are all older cars that need maintenence including and not limited to engine refreshment.

A healthy GTR is reasonably expensive to maintain relative to something like a gtst.

GTR's are also not really a good car as a first car. They are too much to handle. BUT, I feel they are in this regard better than a rear wheel drive only gtst , especially in winter.

It's your attitude to driving on the street that matters however. If you think blasting the car sideways on public roads or red light dragging people is cool , then best bet it to steer clear of any skyline.

another for net getting a GTR, for the following reasons:

1: (this is dependant on state). you aren't legally allowed to drive it due to the P plater restrictions

2: if you aren't legally allowed to drive it then you may have issues getting insurance (or they will insure but not pay up if you crash). also insurance will be very high for a 17 year old with a GTR that has already been booked for speeding (my guess would be atleast 3k for insurance, but probably more

3: you say you are a good driver but you are only 17, meaning you haven't had your P's for a full year yet and you have already been booked. put that together with a high powered car and you are garanteed to either get booked again or have a high speed accident

4: a r33 gtr at 17k sounds pretty dodgy

5: as other have said, get something basic to start with. i see you have a vs commodore as your car in your profile, so just stick with that for now. abide by the law and don't get a turbo car until you are legally allowed. driving something basic will be enough until you get more experience (1.5 years isn't much) and will last you until you have matured a bit more.

6: if you are planning on getting a turbo car down the track, i wouldn't start with going straight to a GTR anyway. i would start with something cheaper to run and maintain such as a GTS-t. if you get sick of having to open your wallet all the time, then a GTR definately isn't for you.

GTR might be cheap to buy but an an engine and drivetrain re-build will cost you more than the car!!!

And owning a GTR doesnt make you a GTR driver.

Learn to drive and save up to buy a decent one or get stuck with a broken one in your driveway ( or at a workshop) that you cant afford to fix

Personally i wouldnt waste my time on an NA Skyline. Much better out there. But thats just me.

But to the OP, I was able to buy one and drive one cause I'm in Perth. They aren't cheap to maintain as previously stated. When I first bought mine, straight away I had a 2k service...

ive had my license since june last year so its been 1 year

ive always wanted a nice and powerful car but it looks like i will have to wait

right now im looking at this i mainly want it because of its look and i love s14's

No you should not buy a GTR this early.

And yes a 17k GTR will break. Cheap, for a reason.

I hate law makers, but i honestly agree with these ones for a change.

You'll be unlucky to find that when the laws are passed - it will go by the date of your license - not when you purchased the car if/when a decision is made.

No law will work on a purchase date of a car, that would be impossible to police

So in your best financial interest you are much better off waiting to see what eventuates with the laws, when they backdate them too, what years are affected and so on.

You might very well find they back date it to the start of 2010, or Jul 1 2009 or similar styled dates in which case you would be up the creek without a paddle, boat or air freshener

Wait till ya 25, save your cash for a newer model GTR. Cheaper car insurance and plus time to get rid of your previous traffic offences.

i would also say no to getting a gtr because of the turbo laws and if you have already been booked thats not a good start

but saying that i got a r33gtr when i turned 18 and still have not lost a point on my license ive also been driving and working on car since i was 8 ive had about 20 padock bashers and since i got my ls ive only ever owned turbo cars i had a 4g63 cb lancer till i got my ps then i bought a 350 hp n14 pulsar then i had a gtir to put all my parts of the pulsar on untill some one rear ended me then i bought a gtr and they are so much work its not funny and dangerious

+1 no GTR, not good daily drivers (yes that's debatable), engine rebuild is ~6-8K, your tyres cost $$$, even your windscreen will cost $250 where a ford/commodore windscreen costs $150.

Even if you have the money I'd still say stay away until you are older and more mature
