I have 2 questions

A friend owns a R31 Aus Skyline and it needs a brake up grade, I have heard lots but have not actually been told what does or what does not fit.

My understanding is GTR calieprs fit but only Jap R31 struts?

Any information would help.

my 2nd question in on R33 4spots, A friend has a pair he's giving me and the only thing is, I want to rebuild them, has anyone done tihs or know how much it costs for the kit, and the like.

Thanks RODHOG

yes you need jap R31 struts - or custom caliper mounts to be made (which is expensive). When you put jap struts on you have many more options.

talk to a brake and clutch place for rebuild kits. 1 spot kits are cheap, 4 might be more costly. But make very sure you know what you're doing rebuilding brakes, if you don't have expertise on hand to supervise I'd let a workshop do it. Because if you stuff up one piston and it leaks, you squirt the fluid out your pedal goes to the floor and you have NO brakes. But rebuilding them is a very wise idea if their condition is unknown or suspect.

There are other dramas and costs if you try and use the australian struts/hubs. I did it. Not a good option. Costs a lot. Find some complete import struts if you want to do the upgrade. You also need r32 gtst master cyl, booster, some new hardlines made up, fluid, pads, engineering cert, wheels that will clear the callipers etc etc. Oh and if you upgrade the rears (custom job on an aussie 31) the package is awesome.

I recommend just getting slotted rotors, good pads and fluid for most people instead of putting on big units, unless you are really charging hard on the limit. In a value/cost/use sense that is, in theory everyone should get the biggest/best brakes they possibly can. Good pads and fluid means stuff that doesnt fade and usually costs a bit.

thanks Guys it really helps

At the moment the R31 is turbos and is makeing lost of power about 300Hp at the rear wheels and bit. Mate thinking of going the full Job but and Brembo calipers as he's getting another bottom Rb30 end made up to take more power then it's current light state of tune

After read a fair bit through your forums I didn't know the Jap model differed so much from the Aus built one's. Still love a GTS-R but

Thanks for the advice on the brakes, the last time I did rebuild calipers was on a Gemini when I was 15. Worked fine, After that I just left it to a pro. I think I will with these brakes as well.

Thanks for all the help too.

    • And that's a massive problem, because deadshits will deadshit and give you false details. At least in these days of mobile cameraphones, it is trivial to take photos of any ID they are carrying at the same time as the 300 photo extensive documentation of the state of the vehicles that I recommend even for minor incidents. And you get photos of the person's face, any visible tatoos, etc etc, while you're at it. Then you try to avoid mentioning that you're fully capable of making explosives of various power levels and will wreck their shit if you are forced to hunt them down.
    • No, I don't remember the exact reasoning (was 20 years ago!) but the cops didn't end up supplying it to us either. Actually my mother went through a similar thing recently where she was hit when stationary, flustered and didn't get address (she got plate details, name, phone and insurance company, but not address). Person who hit her blocked her number and their insurance company (naturally) would not provide any details. Her insurance company also required her to pay the at fault premium because she did not have the address, cops did not help as it is a minor civil matter (they said their only course was if the other driver had left the scene of the accident without providing any details). She only ended up getting that refunded because they happened to be insured with Suncorp and she was with APIA so same company owners. For some reason the address is critical in insurance companies recovering money from the at fault party
    • If you're driving something like an R32 through to R34, no chance of meeting Euro4. Euro4 came out in 2006, and car manufacturers back then were complaining how hard it would be to meet those regulations. Not a chance a vehicle 10 years earlier is going to be compliant.
    • I presume it would take more than just slapping a big modern catalyst on the exhaust? It's interesting though, looking at the old sales brochures and listings it does not mention anything about emissions. No one cared.
    • Yeh nice, looks like their part of keep it reet? Will have to swing past. I'd much prefer someone actually look at my car and custom make a part, then get a generic part online and hope it works.
