A lot of people blab on about how their gtst are 'stock'

yet they have 3inch exhuast. Really is this stock?

Can you compare a pure stock vs a stock + 3inch exhuast?

the car with the exhuast will win provided both drivers equal skill level.

i have a pure stock nothing done expect a K & N filter. Yet i've bet many other stocks with 3inch exhuast. Shit driver? probably.

Any way my MAIN quesiton is, has anyone here who are PURE STOCK

boosted their car with bleed valve. YES pure stock NO exhuast but boosted say 9-10psi?

ANYONE?

Hi mupkant, perhaps the reason you are not getting much response is because what you are suggesting (boost up & no exhaust upgrade) is pretty silly. The standard exhaust on a turbo car is always the weakest link, improving the other links won't help. ie; you are already choking the turbo with the standard exhaust, so turning the boost up is pretty much a waste of time.

Plus, in my opinion, you are risking ceramic turbine failure earlier than if you upgraded the exhaust. This is because strangling the turbine does not allow the heat to escape and heat will kill the ceramic just as fast as excessive boost will.

Maybe that answered your question, in a round about way.

hehe yeh my car was completely stock when I got it. As in factory stock. The exhaust even had the date & month of the car's manufacturer stamped on it. No air pods, boost controllers. Took 11months for the importer to find a good condition factory stock 32. Only thing aftermarket was a Addzest aftermarket headunit.

Anyway i did what Sydneykid was talking about - stock car with more boost. Sure it gave it more power but you could definately feel the exhaust choking everything. Car now has 14psi boost, 3" 5Zigen dump-pipe back exhaust & remapped ecu. Funnily enough its a lot easier to drive because the power comes on sooner due to the exhaust. (I have dyno graphs of what each mod did)

Anyway yes, I have talked to lots of ppl who also tell me "yeh my car was stock too, all it had was 3" exhaust, pod....".

Yeah, mine is exactly what you described, dead stock except for bleed valve. (yeah, I know, that makes me an idiot :D )

It runs about 9-10psi.

For me exhaust note is a concern, the stocker is nice and quiet, its a daily driver and I hate droning exhaust.

Also, to me, I reckon a stock skyline is plenty fast enough for a road car, I'd rather learn how to make the most from a slow car, than to drive a faster car poorly...

Only other "performance" mods are 18" wheels and a tighter diff. Which makes mone pretty much the slowest GTST going around :)

my car only has a a 3" front pipe and dual cat back sys and im not surprised that stock as a rock lines will probably beat me....though no one has yet:D:D i find that with the exhaust u loose the kick when the boost hits at 2.5k but when it hits the 5k mark when full boost is on then its a different story:D

are u planin to run 9-10psi mupkant?? apparently u can get about 9psi by just gettin a full exhaust system??

mupkant,

No problems doing the bleed valve first. The exahust is always a good thing but, if you got no $ then the $90 for a bleeder is cheap and gets rid of the 'two step' boost of the factory controller. You can always keep the boost down to 10psi to save the ceramic turbine.

It works. so go do it.

mate, second thing I did after my bleed valve was the exhaust and I tell u what. Its quiet as anything. No in cabin drone at all and its even fairly quite at high rpms.

U just have to make sure you get a well designed one. Thats why I got a jap brand Jasma approved one. (5Zigen) The damn thing is so quiet i'm thinking of getting rid of one of the mufflers!

For me exhaust note is a concern, the stocker is nice and quiet, its a daily driver and I hate droning exhaust.

Mine is completely stock besides the K&N panel filter, turbo timer, and 2 stage boost controller. I bought it with the controller & timer on it. I have kept up with 32s only having like a cat back system running pretty much equivalent boost & same with 33s, but i have been hosed by a few running decent exhausts & being well tuned. It is running around 11psi. I think the previous owner should have focused on the exhaust first. Early next year i am getting a custom 3" turbo back zorst, along with heaps more goodies....

    • It's something we all have to consider as time marches on. Also consider lifted rally MX5 conversion at that point.
    • I should be fine for a few more years, whilst I do have arthritis I also exercise and do mobility training every day to keep as fit and healthy as I can, military life, which is the actual cause of most of my joint issues, has set daily regimes, which I weirdly enjoy I also train alot smarter now, not really focusing on lots strength or puffy muscles, I'm more focused on maintaining what I have for my future older self, I actually train as much mobility now as I do exercising Check out this "simple" drill I have been doing daily prior to training now for a while now, this has worked wonders in my all round mobility
    • I'd say one thing that may make you sell is the same reason the guy with the hard top roof sold his. He got old, and his back was giving him too much grief stopping him getting in and out... Old guy said he was 73! He looked and sounded younger than 73 to me! Or maybe I'm just aligning with old people more...
    • Already looked at a few prior to getting the MX5, really nice car, had all the mod cons, but I wasn't really sold on the new "look" I did miss my 2017 Limited, and I personally prefer the "look" of the older car over the new model, but, when pondering I kept going back looking at MX5's But it was same same for the new ND's, I wasn't sold on the new "look", especially the RF with its weird roof, which only half goes down, like a targa top sort of thing As I stated before, I did look at NC's, but the cars I looked at were PRHT's, but I didn't like their roof line "look" of the PRHT, until I saw the soft top version, (someone on SAU posted a for sale ad for one with a soft top that caught my attention, you can blame them for my choice.....🤣) and.... that old style detachable hard tops were available for them, which keeps the old MX5 more smoother flowing roof line, and the more rounded body style, similar to the NA-NB, to me, the arse end of the ND looks to "modern" Much like how I prefer the NC1 front bar, over the later models How long will I keep this car for is unknown, but currently, there's nothing else out there that "floats my boat" for a small, fun, little "sports car", that I can play with and enjoy looking at and driving But, who knows what the future holds, and going off current new car styling, if I replace it, it will be a older model something something
