Everything you always wanted to know about Japan...

Recommended Posts

no plans yet, I was just gonna wing it when I got there... (or follow the crowd I guess). My gf has a relo in Osaka so I was gonna use that as my base of operations...

I think this Japan forum should be renamed Rezz's Forum - as he has posted up nearly all the threads:D

I do have a question though, on one of the other threads it says baka = stupid, I was under the impression that this actually means crazy or does it mean both.

Also, could you enlighten me to about gaijin - I have been told by a ex pat Jap that it is a derogatory term, to quote 'same as calling a negro a African American' is this true also?

gaijin means outsider... foreigner... unwelcome invader (according to old scripts)... so yeah it meas "you're not welcome amongst us, bugger off" in polite terms. Thing with most ordinary japs is they won't curse at you if they're pissed, but they won't make u feel very welcome either.

Rezz`s Forum? Nooooooooo, please please post up more threads people!:)

Baka: Stupid, silly, foolish.

Kurutteiru: crazy. (this is very direct in meaning)

About what you said about 'same as calling a negro a African American', that aaaaaalmost sums it up in todays language. For example, two foreigners will use Gaijin in passing conversation such as: "Hey mate, did you go to that new Gaijin bar in Shinsaibashi?", but on the other hand, if a foreigner approaches a Japanese girl and it's obvious he's just out for a screw, she maight say "Leave me alone, Gaijin!"... where the emphasis is on "Gaijin", being so that the word is used in a derogitory way to cause ill feeling, kind of like "African American"...

My 2c... what do you say Demon Dave?

Rezz, right on the money there.

That pretty much sums up the word gaijin as far as I understand it. By the way, if you want to use a more "polite" term, use Gaikokujin... :)

Generally though, most foreigners refer to each other as Gaijin's anyway! :)

just wonder how the drag strips in japan are?

I notice they dont spray much traction compound(im not sure just by watching videos),and the strip itself looks like a normal road. This must be good for street radial tires but bad for full slick drag cars?

    • It's something we all have to consider as time marches on. Also consider lifted rally MX5 conversion at that point.
    • I should be fine for a few more years, whilst I do have arthritis I also exercise and do mobility training every day to keep as fit and healthy as I can, military life, which is the actual cause of most of my joint issues, has set daily regimes, which I weirdly enjoy I also train alot smarter now, not really focusing on lots strength or puffy muscles, I'm more focused on maintaining what I have for my future older self, I actually train as much mobility now as I do exercising Check out this "simple" drill I have been doing daily prior to training now for a while now, this has worked wonders in my all round mobility
    • I'd say one thing that may make you sell is the same reason the guy with the hard top roof sold his. He got old, and his back was giving him too much grief stopping him getting in and out... Old guy said he was 73! He looked and sounded younger than 73 to me! Or maybe I'm just aligning with old people more...
    • Already looked at a few prior to getting the MX5, really nice car, had all the mod cons, but I wasn't really sold on the new "look" I did miss my 2017 Limited, and I personally prefer the "look" of the older car over the new model, but, when pondering I kept going back looking at MX5's But it was same same for the new ND's, I wasn't sold on the new "look", especially the RF with its weird roof, which only half goes down, like a targa top sort of thing As I stated before, I did look at NC's, but the cars I looked at were PRHT's, but I didn't like their roof line "look" of the PRHT, until I saw the soft top version, (someone on SAU posted a for sale ad for one with a soft top that caught my attention, you can blame them for my choice.....🤣) and.... that old style detachable hard tops were available for them, which keeps the old MX5 more smoother flowing roof line, and the more rounded body style, similar to the NA-NB, to me, the arse end of the ND looks to "modern" Much like how I prefer the NC1 front bar, over the later models How long will I keep this car for is unknown, but currently, there's nothing else out there that "floats my boat" for a small, fun, little "sports car", that I can play with and enjoy looking at and driving But, who knows what the future holds, and going off current new car styling, if I replace it, it will be a older model something something
