Ku31 265/35 Or Ku36 245/40?

Hi guys,

Have a track day coming up on 25th Oct and trying to sort out some tyres.

KU36's are not available anywhere in Oz in 265/35 - Not in the warehouse, and i think i rang about 10 places yesterday around Melbourne but no one keeps that size in stock.

Ideally, i would want to run 265/35/R18 but have been told i could run 245/40 if i wanted to, and the car would be 5mm higher, no big deal.

Or i can get 265/35 in KU31's, as they are available.

The car is not driven every day, and realistically will only see about 2-3 track days a year. Problem is though, my bridgestones at the moment are not coping with the 285rwkw. I'm 99% confident it isn't suspension issues as i have pretty much everything in that department. Front rear camber kits, pineapples (max anti squat), adj swaybars front rear, bilstein shocks, whiteline springs. And just recently had the boys at Traction Tyres install a few things and give her an alignment, so i think the suspension is about as good as it's going to get at the moment, which only leaves the tyres as the problem with no traction when on boost.

The KU36's sound great and are obviously priced very well, but what would the better option be? 245/40/R18 in the KU36 or run the full 265/35/R18 in the KU31's?? Is there are HUGE difference between the 31's and 36's?

Or not worry about it as i'm likely to have traction issues regardless unless running a better tyre?

I guess i could always turn the boost down

tried all forums, practically all drivable kumho dealers in melb as well.

no one HOLDS stock of that size, it's order in job. The warehouse, kumho, has no 265's. So doesn't matter who i call or pm or email, no one can get them until after christmas.

so now i need to decide if i should get some 245/40's in the KU36, or perhaps 265 all round in the KU31. I maybe go some Federal 595's SS or RS-R, or some Falken RT615's or maybe just put 2 good tyres on the back, and leave the bridgestones up the front?

Ah, i was under the impression O1G was bringing them in themselves, as A tyre shop i spoke to told me they were selling them for less than what they could buy them for...

I personally would go the slightly thinner better compound Ku36 if on a budget, or look at another tyre if you want the size... RT615's are meant to be decent

265/35/R18 standard. But Traction Tyres said i could go 245/40 if i wanted, don't know how much of a difference it would make though.

O1G might be direct importing, but i don't think even the factory is producing any 265's at the moment it seems. Maybe that's why not even O1G can get them.

the 245's wouldn't look weird would they? i'm guessing you wouldn't be able to tell just by eye-balling them... don't know though

the stretch won't be very noticeable.. i have the same rims as you on 235/40 and i don't think they look too out of place

my 2c, i would get the thinner 36s

yeah, i think i'm fairly sold on just going 245/40 in the 36's. Price difference is just too great to try and hunt something in 265.

From what traction tyres told me, 265 is about spot on for 18 x 9 and for track work the furthest you'd go down would be 245. And obviously not go up anything. If it was purely for street, i'd probably be a bit more flexible, but because i know they'll see track time i'm keen to stay within safer limits

my 235/45 does not have noticeable stretch. It doesnt quite use the rim protector on the ideal angle, but it is FINE... I can give you photos tomorrow of how MINIMAL the stretch is.

Supposedly 180rwkw... really should put my EBC in and wind it up ey . So I guess Can't really compare given you have ~100rwkw more.

I dare say my car is a little lighter and stiffer than yours though(with a 2way), and I wouldn't say I struggle for traction. With shitty neovas, I did. If you are going for max traction on a budget, maybe go 245/45 for the extra sidewall? and its cheaper. A light stretch on the front will also feel better, and be cheaper. I assume you are keeping an eye on the wallet given your options. PM Ash and ask him what Tyres he was running, he had similar power to you with no issues, now has more I think.

The 45 series is cheaper and has a higher load rating, something to keep in mind.

I was looking for the KU36 in 265 for my 10 inch rims but was in the same boat as you so went for the 275... seem to be an okay tyre, pretty good for the price

best thing you can do for traction is a good mech diff... made a world of difference on my old car

245's are fine on 8 or 9in wide rims but the Kuhmo's aren't a true semi slick tyre.

You mentioned going to Traction Tyres, the owner Andrew is away as he is unfortunately being treated for cancer but the guys there know what they are on about and they don't rate them anywhere nearly as highly as the true semi slicks.

Falken RT615's are the same as the KU36's designed to be more a really good street tyre. You need to get a set of Falken RT215's or RS V04's if your looking for a really high performance tyre in that price range, I run RS V04's and so does Jim Richards and he has previously won Targa Tasmania on them.
