I'm suprised not to have found the answers on a search but this is what I need to know:

Pitfalls of a second hand purchase? (if any)

Brands / manufacturers - which ones are good?

Where to buy, if new?

What is important in a good adj. cam gear? What to look for.

Don't want to go over the top and nor do I want to buy crap.

Thanks.

I wouldn't buy them second hand unless you can inspect them, particularly the condition of the teeth first, and make sure you stay away from the old version HKS gears which were notorious for tooth wear which led to timing belts slipping - not something you want!

If you have the money, Tomei and HKS both make their new version gears from Duralumin and are the pick of the bunch.

For something a little more budget friendly, get yourself a set of OS Giken gears, they are a fair bit cheaper than both Tomei and HKS and I have never come across anyone who has had an issue with them :whistling:

Perfect. Just the advice I was looking for. Best places to buy from? Being honest I suspect I'll go with Ash's option but be good to look into this too. Cheers.

Stock gears can be modded and made adjustable.

Considering you can't see them behind the cam cover - cheapest option that works the same as stuff double the price

Thanks Ash. Given the std items are decade(s) old, they still OK to modify? Is it a case of good old quality Datto items? Also, where can I get them modified and do you have a rough cost estimate.

Should be ~$150 to have the stock ones fab'd into adjustable if memory serves me correct.

They are as strong as anything else, so no issue.

Thx. Where from? Who will do that kind of work? Cheers.

anyone had experience with the jjr product?

i've got ones similar(probably the same) as the jjr product...

they are ok but the bolts are shithouse, so i went and got a set of stainless steel bolts from local fastner place, worked a treat
