Hi all,

The inner CV boot on the passenger side has split on my stag ('97 s1 RS4V). To replace the boot I need to pull the drive shaft. Has anyone done this and can run me through it? Ive found numerous bits of info on it but none of its really solid information.

eg.

i do know how the shafts come out.

both sides u need to take the top control arm off and steering rack arm and coilover off the strut, then u can lever the hub towards the outside of the car and that will allow enough room to get the spline from out of the brake hub (u gotta undo the big hub bolt first as its holding the shaft in and it will be bloody tight, best bet is a big socket set, i use a 3/4 inch set for this, or get a long breaker bar and it should do the trick).

the drivers side is held into the front diff by just a spline that is a tight fit, u need 2 levers close to the sump/diff and lever the axle out as u pull it outwards and it will pop out.

the passenger side is a flange to flange and 6 bolts need to be removed close to the sump and it will come off easy.

So I get I need to pull the wheel, remove the massive nut on the end of axle and remove the top control arm and steering rack arm.... Which arms the steering rack arm? (is it the one with tie rod end on it?) and how do i remove it? Whats the upper control arm is that the weird U shape looking thing at the top of the wheel arches?

Cheers all!

When i have done it, we undid the lower control arm, and the steering tie rod end, removed the strut from the hub and the big nut on the middle of the hub and that gave us enough room to get the hub over the splice.

The undo the six bolts on the flange and out she came.

The upper control arm is the U shaped one yes.

To remove the tie rod and remove the split pin, losen the castle nut and undo it till the end of the thread is covered by the nut, then give it a smack with a hammer this should free it from the taper and not damage the thread. If you have a tie rod splitter better again but most people dont.

So you think I should remove the lower control arm, coil over and tie rod end instead?

whats this "castle nut" where is it ect...

I had to do the passenger side too, had to get a 38mm socket and a breaker bar.

from memory i only undid the axle nuts and the 38mm end nut and managed to wiggle it out.

It was about 18months ago now so I can't remember exactly how I got it out. I have a scar about an inch long as a reminder though, so be careful!

We just undid the lower control arm where it bolts to the cross member, one long bolt. Undo the strut from the hub, one nut and slide the strut off, leave it bolted up top, should have enough movement, and yeah split the tie rod end.

The castle nut is on the tie rod end, its where the split pin goes through to lock it.

axle bolts being the 6 that hold the shaft into the diff?

Seems like its going to be alot easier than i thought

when i was pulling my engine, all i done was,

remove hub nut

remove 2 bolts holding lower balljoint

remove the bolt that goes to sway bar,

remove the 6 nuts holding the shaft

out she comes with some jiggling,

Hi Chris sorry for the late reply, i found the PM yesterday and was late at night so havent had a chance to reply, but sounds like Neil has the right idea, he does it an easier way than i did it, i havent tried his way but im sure it will work as he has done it a few times like me :)

Oh and getting the steering arm tie rod off will be a pain, ive found a hammer messes up the nut and it still doesnt budge most times. Best bet is a small 2 prong pulley from the local supercheap or something and it will make it an easy job, i dont think the pulleys are much at all either.

seems the hard way to do it removing the tierod, but if you want to remove tie rod, just hit that part of the hub with a hammer, few sharp blows is all it needs to remove it, ive not used ball joint/tie rod splitters for years, they cause all kinda damage to the internals and rubbers of the joint,

my 2 cents
