First, learn the regulations and don't forget your rights.

You'll be surprised how often the cops get it wrong.

The RTA has these downloadable in PDF but you gotta dig deep to find them.

Go to RTA website,

Click Registration

Click Useful Downloads - Vehicle standards.

Then search your individual defected item. You'll eventually find a relative regulation.

If you're in the right, go to court and dispute it.

As for mufflers, did the cops take a Db reading ?

If they didn't, then how do they know it's illegal.

I got pinged for my front rego plate being on a slant, but it WAS within 45 degrees and conformed.

I took a day off work, disputed it, and won. No court costs.

The cops in court didn't even know the regulation themselves and the judge was pissed off at them !

Don't let them give you a track record. Every time they check your rego, it'll all show up and they'll never leave you alone.

bad luck dude, but listen to conan7772, a lot of cops dunno wot they r talking about and just wanna be a pain in ur ass. if they are going to hand u a defect then ask to see their TMU license, no license the get their badge number and report them cos they are not allowed to check out ur car or look under the hood or issue defects.

there is a handbook u can get that actually has all the rules and regulations in it and being a skyline driver its good to have it in case a cop tries to shit talk u. that pettit wanker got suspended for making up bullsh*t defects and i think a lot more cops out there are doin the same thing all the time.

and about vicroads, it depends on what the defect it. u can call them and ask if they want to see the car but its 50/50 chance they will. if its height then yes, but other defects u usually just need to go to vicroads and show them the RWC and be on ur way

So you definately sure that if they aren't TMU, they can't defect you??

im 99% sure cos if they arent TMU then they wont know what they can defect u on. like this one idiot that pulled over bez, he couldnt defect him but he looked under the hood to give him a hard time. hes like "where u hiding the turbo?" and everyones like wtf is this guy stupid or something?

i bet the worst they could do is get u for bald tyres but as for under the hood no chance

thanks bros does RTA rule apply to vic ?

i was defected in some drug/alcohol operation in the city well you know with the big buses.

i was asked to park at the side after breathtest and they started to talk cock

ive got a MAJOR and heres the list (as written on the notice)

front end alignment (ive just done it no longer than 1 month when i replaced my tyres)

induction system - to be connected ( i have a random pipe in my engine bay unconnected)

gear stick - to comply with ADR's (i didnt know you get defected for gearknobs thats pretty stupid)

exhaust pipe - to be protrude past rear of vehicle (understandable i was about to replace it)

apexi unit to be removed (it is a afc neo)

so now ive got a major defect what can i do now or do i simply get them done and go for inspection?

i wasnt asked for RWC tho.

thanks

well if its a major defect then ur most likely gonna have to bring ur car in to vicroads to be checked. its bloody bullsh*t how they think they can get u for ur alignment these days. it happened to my mate n i was like wtf.

ur gear stick can easily be fixed, ur already fixing ur exhaust so ur gonna have to get ur power fc (if thats what u were talking bout) removed as well as the boost controller cos if they are gonna look under the hood then they will check for all the obvious stuff as well. better to be safe than sorry i guess

Mate sorry - but what the f*k are you on about? :D

Sounds like more of your "mates mate told me" like your other thread :P

Any officer of the law can check out your car, anytime, anywhere.

As for conan7772 - NSW laws do not apply here.

It is law.

They are police, one of their jobs is to police the law.

It is not as if someone from the drug squad cant arrest someone for shoplifting, or a member of the TMU arrest someone for fighting in the street.

So how would be a defect for a car be any different? It is a law, simple as that.

Nismoid is right, TMU are just specialised in traffic laws, like the drug squad are specialised in drugs. Any cop is able to issue a defect on any car that is deemed to be unsafe or not within roadworthy specification. Some of the laws are a bit shitty but they are the laws and you either abide by them or run the risk.

On the alignment thing, if your tyres are worn on inside or outside edge then they will obviously put that down to alignment issues hence the defect.

Just get it all fixed and you'll be sweet.

Don't know were you got your information from but its complete Bullsh*t

Any police officer, dept of Transport officer or vicroads officer can defect your vehilce, TMU mainly do it over GD police because it's more inline with there core duites.

here is the the regulation that tells you who can defect a vehilce.

Road Safety Act 1986

Section 14 Defective vehicles

(1) A member of the police force or a person referred to in section 13(6) may, in accordance with the regulations, on discovering a vehicle that does not comply with this Act or the regulations—

(a) issue a warning or a vehicle defect notice; or

(b) impose conditions on the use of the vehicle;

or

© prohibit the use of the vehicle.

Sub-section 13(6)

13(6) In this section authorised officer for the purposes of this section means—

(a) an officer of the Corporation authorised in writing by the Corporation for the purposes of this section; or

(ab) a person employed under Part 3 of the Public Administration Act 2004 in the police force of Victoria who is authorised in writing by the Chief Commissioner of Police for the purposes of this section;

or

(b) an employee in the Department of Infrastructure authorised in writing by the Secretary to the Department of Infrastructure for the purposes of this section.

thanks all for clarifying.

so do I have to fix only the stuffs listed or everything that might be a problem? (HID, ebc, etc..)

thought id throw my 2 cents as i copped a major for pretty much tyres, no horn and handbrake button non-automatic.

u need roadworthy cert, a major means u have an unroadworthy vehicle so simple answer got get it roadworthy, u wont have a problem, guy at vicroads who looked over my car was a youngen like me into cars, tested the stuff on the paper, n was done, vicroads are pretty cool people if u get ur shit in order dude.

peace let us know how u go.

    • Well.... it's not just "de-oxygenating". If you do that you just have, most likely, ethane. So you still need to do a synthesis step to combine a number of ethanes/ethanols to make circa-8-chain hydrocarbons. And of course you don't want straight chain HCs, because n-octane actually has a negative octane rating (ie, it's worse even than the n-heptane which sets the zero on the octane scale!), so you have to do some tricky catalytic chemistry to synthesise branched HCs. That's all doable - but it doesn't come for free. And.... it starts with ethanol, which is an agricultural product, and there will almost certainly never be enough of that as a base stock to replace the liquid fuels that are in use. You really wouldn't want to be planning to be using any more ethanol for fuels than is currently already used (in E10, E85s, etc). And ideally you'd be looking to reduce such usage, as it is largely wasteful, particularly in the stupid-ole'US-of-A where the corn lobby has organised it so that it's actually primary production corn that is used to make a lot of the ethanol, not by-products and waste, like it is (mostly) elsewhere. So, what I said about needing free-ish energy probably still applies. True synth fuels would be made from H2 and CO2, in a near reversal of the combustion process. In fact, given that the H2 would be split from water first, it actually is a complete reversal of the combustion process. But...energy intensive. The human race burns something like 1 cubic MILE of crude oil, after it has been made into various fuels. Every year. That's a simply stupendous amount of energy. Just assume that the density is 900 kg/m3, and that the calorific value is 45 MJ/kg, then that is 165.9 x10^12 MJ of energy. Or more than 10^19 Joules. You get a maximum of 1 kJ/s per square meter solar radiation falling on the planet's surface, and so if you halve that for daylight, and halve it again for average weather (highly optimistic) and then take ~25% for the very best efficiency of solar panels, then you need about 85.7 billion square metres of solar panels to generate enough electricity to replace that liquid fuel energy consumption. Each panel is about 1m2. That's a rather large number of panels. We also burn about a cubic mile of coal. We also use hydroelectric power. We also use nuclear. We also use a number of other sources, both "renewable" and not. You can kind of ignore the renewable ones (except for hydro, because it will all end up getting subsumed into pumped hydro for storing other renewables, and so it won't be the standalone renewable that it originally was), so we end up needing a multiple of the ground area number that I just arrived at.
    • Corvette thread then? Don't say I didn't predict the future again. "I love the little MX5, I do, but I just want something a little easier to get in/out of, a little more cushy and some power would be nice - I miss the V8 Rumble... I found this clean red C5 for sale recently and..." I'll do you a great deal on the next step, which is one of those but you can fit people in it, too.
    • What about renewable diesel and/or gasoline? I see some projects spinning up like de-oxygenating ethanol to make drop-in compatible bio-gasoline especially in CA. I still think the future is EVs and we should've all gone full throttle on nuclear power after the 1973 oil crisis like France. Despite 15 years of work in CA to reduce the CO2 intensity of generation with renewables our electric grid is still far worse than even "low carbon" nuclear power. ICE is pretty cool when you aren't depending on the stupid thing to be practical and reliable and cheap as possible to get you to work every day. It's kind of like mechanical watches or vacuum tube amps.
    • I just rolled over "my" first 10k km in the MX5 Every time I go anywhere it always ends up in a adventure to look at houses and find some random country roads I've been on leave since early November but unfortunately need to go back to work on 19 January Luckily though I still have a fair chunk of leave left to burn until.... Not that I'm counting 😁
