so i was looking at the costs of Gtr's in japan( they vary some gtr average cost of 32 gtr is around 4or so g's an so on so forth...), the cost to go to japan n back (roughly a grand) and the cost to ship it to australia - here in perth ( roughly a grand as well) but in the end the total costs are far less than what we would pay at the dealership, i dare say you could get a gtr 33 in Australia in under 10 grand..... where the dealerships here in australia are selling them for 30k+.... makes you wounder... and so the question comes down to is... how many hoops would one have to jump through to have it all taken over the pits and approved. like, what do i have to do to get it road registered?

Bottom line you get what you pay for....

Now is it cheap because its been flogged or in a accident... You are not allowed to import a car for road use if there is any accident history

and the person telling you may not tell you this. has the speedo been changed and the list goes on.

All i can say is be carefull, there are heaps of R34 GTR's and GTT's cheap in japan and some even here but some times you need to question the conditon of the

car, this goes for the r33 and r31 aswell.. If you won't low kms with log books good paint and interior then you pay for it...

My two cents...

p.s. Try about 2 to 3 grand for shipping 2 to 3 grand for compliance and thats only if there is nothing wrong.

Shipping is around 2000 for a container last time I checked, even less for R.O.R.O. (thats "Roll On / Roll Off", to save all you kids hitting up Google)

Add compliance, customs, all the paperwork, applications, etc.

Its not pretty but if you're comparing to dealerships it will ALWAYS be cheaper to import.

You could get an R33 GTR in Japan for under 10k, no problems, but by the time its in your driveway with plates, add another 5 or so, atleast.

Chpear isnt always a bad thing - remember, Skylines are getting close to nothing special here in Aus. in Japan, theyre like Commodores, there are thousands and thousands laying around, in perfect working order, just not worth a great deal of money in their own country, so they rip off international buyers and make some money for old cars, the only difference is Jap teenagers dont buy cheap ass Skylines and flog the shit out of them, MOST of them are pretty decent.

Application to import

Freight

Customs

Transport from the docks to compliance

Compliance itself

Alarm install

Any other work needed to make it road worthy

Pit Fee's

Rego fee's, like paying for plates n shit.

Procedure is different depending on the year of the car, but its all covered in the Importing section that was linked.

It would be a royal pain in the ass, but I say go for it, then you get bragging rights and more satisfaction. Alot of people import their own vehicles without ever paying a broker, and save thousands, its just a bit of a headache if its your first time.

You speak good Japanese?

Dont take it the wrong way but you are smoking something strong if you believe this, there are more threads then you can poke a stick at on the true cost to import a car.

Out of all the so called "Cost Calculators" I have seen over the years the ONE AND ONLY true Cost Calculator is what Danny at Imports101 has on his web site.

As you can see on the image below if you bought a car for $1 which means duty and GST are nothing it still costs you $7,346 on road, your stamp duty is also way below the true figure

33 GTRs here only cost 22-28k depending on mods/condition

peace of mind to inspect it in person here and dont have to wait the 3 month importing process

Dealers like Autoworx are selling them for around 24k + $600 for warranty

Its a buyers market. Shop hard - have the dollars ready, and you will find the right car at the right price -either privately (cheap) or from a dealer (with warranty etc). I was looking for about 3-4 weeks (through August) and finally found a original, unmodified "mint" R32 GTR - in the Quokka!! - for just under $14K.

The are not alot of R32 GTR's currently on the market, but heaps in the Eastern States (view carsales) - I was almost heading there......

Importing one car privately - is not worth the pain and puss, and there is no real $$ gain when importing cheaper cars (ie under $50K)

Steve.

I know someone who flew over to Japan, spent a week looking at potential cars, a couple of cars each day, then eventually he picked an R34 GTR. He went through all the processes, eventually got it over here and in his driveway for a final price of $38700... And discovered the whole underneath of the car was corroded and everything needed to be replaced including things like the petrol tank, etc. Getting the car into the condition he thought it was ended up costing him another $25000. So in the end it was a lot more expensive, and a lot more hassle and heart ache to import than it would have been to buy locally.

I would talk to someone like Iron Chef (Kristian is on these forums), someone who knows exactly what they are doing. I wouldn't risk importing a car without the help of someone experienced, they have faced the risks before and know what to look for. They have proper mechanics over in Japan that go and inspect the cars, and they are very very strict on which cars they confirm as suitable. All this info is shown to you, along with pictures of the cars, etc. They handle everything, pretty much all you need to do is pick a car and pay for it.

These professional importers are well worth the extra cost in my opinion

Wouldn't most dealer imported vehicles like Skylines receive a 100k service also?

Even at 80,000kms I'm sure they do it... and that's probably around $1k worth.

Sorry if it was mentioned already, only read about 80% of the thread.

    • Not too sure just yet, want to have a go at doing what I can myself, but to start with want someone to cast their eye over it tell me what needs doing to get it running and back on the road, so anyone with great overall knowledge would be ideal.
    • I personally would go with cutting out the rubber. Then deal with getting sleeve off separately. Rubber can be painful to cut, it loves to jam up cutting tools. I normally have success with drill bits, deburr bits, angle grinders, jigsaw, reciprocating saw, and never forget... fire. Obviously different tools won't work in all locations you're trying to work with, and you need to be comfortable with each. You personally may be happy slowly slicing it out with a razor blade, if you are, go for it with one too! Feel free to wait for others to weigh in also on their thoughts.
    • So ... I got everything disconnected and started dropping the frame. Three of the four mounts started to come down but the fourth one (the one with the nut that gave me all the trouble) won't budge. The inner metal sleeve stays up tight against the chassis rail although the outer part of the mount drops a bit (and can be levered quite a lot more) but it's just stretching the rubber bushing. So I reckon there's some serious corrosion inside the inner sleeve and holding it tight to the lug at the top of the bolt. Tried everything I can think of so far: penetrating oil, whacking the top of the sleeve to vibrate it and wedge a screwdriver blade in there. I also tried to turn the inner sleeve a bit by hitting it with a chisel at the bottom. It's stuck solid. What do you think about cutting the rubber with a blade so I can drop the subframe around it anyway. Then worry about getting the inner sleeve off after? Will that work? Is it gonna give me even more problems?
    • Steam valve seals are usually responsible for cold start smoke, it goes away once engine warmed up. Disconnect it let engine breathers and let it breath freely, see if problem goes away after a short drive. Also check to make sure engine oil drain pipe is not blocked or kinked.
    • Haha thanks! Yea I'm moving over from 2x 1000cc jets pre throttle over to 6x 190cc direct port jets and 1x 500cc pre throttle jet.  Direct port comes with all the advantages you would expect, except that pre throttle does cool down IAT'S more. That's why my direct port nozzle placement is closest to the plenum as possible in the runners to allow the air more time to cool before being sucked in. I'm also putting that one 500cc pre throttle jet to help with more cooling. It's a hybrid system. There's a lot more advantages to moving over to a PWM solenoid with a constant pressure system vs my old PWM pump setup, but I'll get more into that once I'm done converting everything over. The ricer in me is excited to see SS tubing all over my manifold though!
