just about to get an safc but some questions just to clear up a few things ... when installing a safc, did u guys cut wires from the ecu?? if so where did u cut it?? what did u use to connect the new wires?? should i really do it properly and get crimping tools which i do have access too ... cutting wires near the ecu will get a bit messy .. i mean the loom is tightly strapped together ... what a bitch if i messed anything up?? and another thing, is the wiring diagram of the ecu the same for an auto as a manual?? ie just go by the manual?? also, how did u guys get the display to be stuck onto the dash on the bottom din position or the tray beneath that??

thanks all :)

It gets pretty tight in there. You have to cut the AFM wire. The rest you can just 'tap' by exposing the copper by splicing the PVC jacket. Make sure you have a good connection. Last time I did a half ass job and found myself stranded in the middle of nowhere hahaha Keep note about the double ground you have to do make on the ground wire of the ECU. It is important.

Im pretty sure the ECUs for auto and manual cars are identical aswell.

My SAFC is in the glovebox. Dont want theives spotting it.

Crimping is ok but I have soldered all of my connections..

It's damn tight in there! And yes it does get messy. I've got an RSM and a SITC soldered in there ATM. The SAFCII should be here within a week. So that will be more frustrating times with my head jammed under the dash with a hot iron and a torch.... Then it will be really messy in there. :)

Take your time and double check everything before cutting any wires...

Mines auto too Hippy and all seems to be going just nicely...

i tapped in to the wires (stripped back the insulation and soldered the wires on) where i could for my RSM cause i dont really like hacking things up

i did a bit of custom work to install it in the dash

theres a link to a pic of it

i haven't as yet read the manual yet ... so i assume that the only wire i have to cut is the ones from the afm ... and the others i just tap  ... tapping seems hard as i'm a little scared i may just cut the wire LOL .. i better practice a few ones first hehe ... thats a very nice custom job there .. i dont' think i'm that motivated LOL ...

strutto .. being an auto ... how much power u got and with what mods?? how much extra gain do u expect?? and did all u guys go to a proper tuner or did u do a dodgy self tune?? :(

hippy: ATM I have 138kw atw with 5psi (DIY bleed closed, factory bleed disabled), 3" front pipe (stock dump) and 3" cat back...

Haven't had it dynoed with the boost turned up yet.

If I get to 170kw atw with SAFCII, ITC and 9psi I'll be bloody happy...

Currently the ITC is zeroed out and I intend on doing the same with the SAFCII until I can get some dyno time early next year.

You?

Oh yeah, the only wire you have to cut is the AFM wire, the rest are taps.

Apexi give you some bullet connectors for the cut wires so you can unplug the device and not have to resolder anything but IMO soldering is safer and more reliable...

So far I've cut my speed sensor wire for the RSM, 4 pos and ref wires for the ITC, and the AFM wire will be cut any day now...

Practising the taps is a good idea. I usually use a small pocket knife and cut all the way around the wire at both ends of the tap, then slice (gently, gently) down the wire and peel of the insulation...

well i don't know what power i have .. i think around 140rwkw with full exhaust at pod ... or there abouts ... it feels really slow with the stock boost controller as you really have to step on it to get it to stay in first and rev out ... so hopefully i dont' have to step on it that much if i put the bleeder on ... this week hopefully if i have the time i can put in my boost gauge, bleeder and safc ... i'm not sure what i'm going to do whether i'm going to try and tune it a little myself or just wait to go to a tuner ... but i can already picture myself giving it a go as i'm so damn tight at the moment LOL

Yeah, you can see on my dyno graph that the AFRs get really rich around 5000rpm resulting in a small power dip.

I'm hoping that I can tune this out with the SAFCII.

You've got a SAFC (Not SAFCII) right? Pity they don't have a knock sensor otherwise you could play with a little more confidence...

Stock intercooler? They suffer massive heatsoak after repeated thrashings so remember to let it cool down in between runs...

well very true about the stock cooler ... plus right now i'm running shitty petrol LOL ... not because its cheaper .. well its a good thing  .. but because my economy is better with it ... this is what i wrote in another post somewhere here ...

i've been using shitty petrol for a couple of weeks now ... i find the theres less power .... not that much ... but i've found it a little strange in that the car still runs smoothly and my feul economy is slightly better in that using 98 ron i was getting just over 400 ... but using 91 ron i'm getting 450+ ... i've got a pod and full exhaust on an auto ... so i'm not too sure whats going on LOL ...

before i had a dump pipe my economy was

91 ron - 350-450k's

95 ron - 450-500k's ... usually very close to 500 so thats what i used.

98 ron - 350-400k's

strange huh?? anyways i can't run 95 ron with the full exhaust cause the bp that used to have only has ultimate.

my question is ... will a SAFC correct whats going on and let me get the same or better mileage ie 500+ k's of a tank using 98 ron??

i bet theres some of u guys saying i'm stupid .. but thats whats happening with the car for some reason ... my car is only on stock boost 7psi max ... even with full exhaust ... and generally i only get to 7 psi every now and then and only at nights ... but since i'm going to be putting up the boost i think i'll be using 98 ron ... but i would really be happy if i could get 500k's off a tank and have good power .. hopefully the safc can do that ... and yeah it would be nice to get a knock sensor ... maybe i should look into other types of knock sensors LOL :(

Yeah, I read that post... Now I don't think your stupid but I disagree based on my experiences...

I've always gotten better economy with 98 RON than with lower RON fuel. Not in the Skyline though. It always gets 98 RON :D Always...

I usually manage 450ks per tank depending on my style of driving.

Have you changed the fuel filter? Easy job and cheap too! It helped my economy a little.

Damn both my cars require 98 RON :( I guess thats what you get when you want POWER!

POWER

over

ECONOMY

C'mon Hippy, you know you want power.

yes i do want power ... that is why i'mm getting safc and the bleeder ... but i'm still perplexed as whats happening with my mileage ... i check my mileage every single tank i get and without fail thats what i'm getting ... i don't know how or why but its the result ... i do lots of driving so mileage is important for me .. i'd sacrifice a bit of power for a little more economy ... apart from economy theres nothing wrong with the car ... idles very smooth ... temps are normal ... oil pressures normal ... everything workin beautiful  ... never had anything wrong mechanically ... service every 7000ks or thereabouts ...

the only thing i can think of is the stock boost i'm on ... before when i had a cat back it would never boost past 350mmhg ... (i dont' have an aftermarket boost gauge on it right now) ... it was like just under ... but now it will go just a tad past 350mmhg with the dump pipe ... i've been told that thats a little low for the mods i have ... i too thought it should boost up to 9 or 10 psi with the dump pipe ... but it was an increase none the less ... maybe a hard spring?? i dunno ... but we'll see with the bleeder in there ... anyways if anyone can suggests anything that would be great!! :(

Driving style will most likely affect your mileage.

Because you have 98RON, and you know it is less likely to ping than 95RON and perhaps you maybe a little bit more spirited in your driving.

Perhaps you should reset your ECU with your next tank of 98RON to see if there is any difference.

I wonder if changing fuel will change how the ECU behaves.

nah i dont' really change driving styles at all ... and i've looked into that too ... i dont' really notice much diff when driving hard or driving slow ... i found that its close enough to not worry about it ...

my ecu definitely does change when u change the petrol ... u notice the power difference and when u first change it u can actually feel it adjusting ... whenever i change over i can smell feul everytime i stop and that goes away after a while ...

I used one of the sweet things to do my install

Field One Touch Connector

It sits between your ECU and Harness, lets you attach to it while it's not in the car, then just plugs in.

ECU + Harness

There is a bit more about it here....

E-manage thread pg 3

I can get it for $250 for an R33....or most other cars if anyone wants one? $275 for an R34 and other selected vehicles

Delivered to your door.....but PM me about that

Strutto,

Your car has 2 knock sensors. They're screwed into the side of your block high on the intake side of your engine. All imported RB engines have them.

I know... Your telling me why?

I was referring to the fact that Hippy's SAFC does not have a knock sensor display whereas my SAFCII does...
