With the help of Allen (2LV8ETR), we chucked in my new (2nd hand) HKS EVC3 boost controller and it seems to be working fine. However I am having a few problems setting it up, does anyone have any experience with this unit? Anybody willing to help a brother out?

:)

1 tell us what model it is . or post a link to a picture os a similar one . or at least try to describe it

2 do a search . ALL of the original instructions are on the hks website

3 how can it seem to work fine if you have no idea how to use it ?

1. As I said in the initial post its an HKS EVC3.

2. I have instructions however I cannot follow all the instructions.

3. All the buttons are working and it is able to read my boost levels but i am having trouble putting it into learn mode and setting my new desired boost levels.

you cant add a boost controller into a R34 (rb25det Neo) without changing the computer. The stock computer doesnt allow it as I was told ages ago from some workshops. Well you can add one in but it wont do shit, wont adjust boost levels like what yours is doing now...so new computer it is

Seems odd. Rob (don't know his username on here) has a black R34 with a manual boost controller and his is working running a stock computer. And those running Nistune still have their stock ECU's yet I have heard many have boosted them up. From what I've read you can add a boost controller however the ECU will just not allow you to run to large of pressures in them. Not calling b/s but my research has told me otherwise.

So very, VERY frustrating, argh! 5psi sucks!

i'm not 100% sure about this. if you remove the stock boost controller. and just hook up your aftermarket ebc how will the stock ecu stop it from increase the boost.

I know it will to the typically add more fuel but i don't see how it can stop your from increasing the boost

The OEM 2-stage boost controller is controlled by the ECU. You take the OEM unit out of the loop and install the EVC to the wastegate actuator and the ECU no longer has control over the boost levels. The EVC then takes control of the boost duties.

Once installed and switched on for the first time, the EVC is supposed to display a green highlighted "3" which depicts learning mode. It never went to that function. Trying to get it in learn mode was unsuccessful.

The issue is in the setting up of the unit, nothing else.

i am unfamiliar with the hks unit, but is it possible to set it up without using the learn mode. just setting up the duty cycle, gain etc

as my friends (Sean from Allstars and Ant from X-Speed) told me that with r34 you can't add a boost controller and turn it up like an r33 or 32 as the neo computer is designed differently, as viet_boi has said he is correct about the computer is the thing in the way that wont let you turn up the boost.

Nistune remaps the stock ecu...if your wanting to turn it up then i guess you'll need a updated computer (Apexi, Nistune, Vipec etc)

xx :D

It is meant to be. There is a manual learning mode where you are meant to dial in the stock boost however this function didn't seem to work properly either, it seems the stock boost level was a lower number then what the unit would allow me to dial in  :ninja:

again don't see how the ecu can stop you from turning up boost if you remove the stock boost controller and connect the ebc directly to the turbo wastegate actuator. then the ebc is controlling things.

Hank Scorpio; try this

Thanks man. I've got the instructions, they are just not being very helpful. I called JPC today to see if he might have any ideas or want to give it a shot and try, they didn't want anything to do to it!

Anybody living NOR and in the know wanna give me hand? I'm a nice guy! :) I tentatively booked it in with my mechanic on Wednesday to take a peak at it but like his Motech ECU's, he's expensive!

I've tried going into manual mode but it says I have to put in my OEM boost level first which I couldn't be able to do, it wouldn't go low enough.

Perhaps I can reset the unit?

    • So.... the K&N air box thingo was too big, ended up gifting it to a mate, well, by gifting it he actually supplied food and beer at the pub,  which was nice, as it will not sit on a shelf in the garage for the next 10 years I did trim up some of the existing stuff to neaten it all up and gave it some wrinkle paint, unfortunately it currently has a used and abused mish mash of different types of hose clamps, 4 big fat T bolt type (shit), and a few normal clamps of vairing sizes and brands, but..... only until the 6 constant tension black worm clamps that I ordered from EFI solutions turn up next week Currently the current hose clamps are triggering me hard, LOL Is this the final version, probably not, I really want just 2 silicone pieces, a straight bit of silicone from the filter to the MAF is easy and will happen as soon as I head into Just Jap tomorrow, the problematic part is a 30° silicone bend from the MAF to the TB that I can connect the engine breather from the head, I found that there are bulk head fittings for boat bilge pumps that should work, but until I can get a 30° silicone bend the alloy pipe, and the 11ty thousand hose clamps, are there for the foreseeable future 4 hose clamps are golden, 6 are grudgingly acceptable, the 8 currently holding it all together is just taking the piss    I've also ordered 60 more retaining wall blocks for the front yard, I mis-gonculated the height that was required to get above the base of the Photinia's (red robin's) that are the hedge behind the front fence, currently it is 2 blocks high, and about 1/2 a block short, so going 3 blocks high will be above the base of the red robin's, and allow some room for mulch
    • It is the stock air box with the panel filter. Everything else is stock except the exhaust at this point, as I also went back to the cleaned 270cc injectors. I will check the RPM when the IACV is unplugged and report back.
    • As MBS suggested if this is happening when the engine is cold you're going to want to remove the intake air regulator and verify resistance + that the shutter is physically opening and closing. At -20C should be fully open, 20C half open, over 60C fully closed. At 20C should be 70-80 ohms. For AAC valve testing using a Consult cable see if you can raise and lower the idle by commanding more or less AAC duty cycle. Hopefully it's pretty linear as well, shouldn't be like 30% AAC valve is barely idling and 40% is 1500 rpm.
    • Bloody apprentices! 🙄
    • Not sure yet.  Was considering speedtek because it was rated to 800hp, but when I did some research about him I don't think I will go for that🤣 So maybe giken gear set, but I'm afraid it won't be strong enough🙄
