about 3 days me and my mate went for a power cruise and the car ran like a dream,

but yesterday when i thought ide give the car a bit along the highway in 3rd...

it went hard untill about 5500 rpm then bam i lost power and there was a ute along side me that said look back!

and i had white smoke out the exhaust... i pulled over and nothing sounded wrong. so i tested it down another street

and it was fine again... any idea's why there was white smoke for ?

i found a bit of oil around the top of my turbo "oil line" and around the top of the engine... im not sure where it came from.

problem #2

as i said everything was fine the other day but yesterday aswell.

when there was is boosting "wide open throttle" it sort of backfires "put pop put" when the boost builds up and it starts pulling.

any ideas what that could be?

the car was non turbo, change full engine to r33 s1 rb25det motor and i change them loom...

running stock ecu (havnt reset power fc and put it in)

3" turbo back exhaust

justjap fmic

pod

high flow turbo

check the dump pipe and pipe from the turbo to the intercooler for oil. possibly an oil seal issue in the turbo.

ok will do but say it is?

what do/can i do to fix it? or should i just take it to a performance shop for repairs?

If you have a boost leak, you'll run very rich and cause some of the fuel to exit into the exhaust before its all burnt.

as for the white smoke, i havnt a clue, maybe turbo bearings are shot, but it should be a more blue-ish smoke rather than white.

If it baffles you anymore, don't hesitate to take it to a workshop to have someone look at it. cos you'll just end up playing with things you don't need to, with the risk of damaging something and wasting money. I learnt this the hard way, my mates 32 had a boost leak, but we ended changing the maf, intercooler AND catchcan before we found a split in a boost pipe!

blew off an intercooler pipe?

vacuum leak?

AFM?

found a large split in the large black vacuum hose that comes from the pipe out of the plenum.

fixed the backfiring now runs great again, thanks mate...

havnt had that oil problem again "yet" so hopefully it doesnt happen again...

1 thing though say i go WOT in 1st or 2nd "it goes hard" but when i change gears i hear the turbo winding but i dont feel the power i should in the next gear?

i hope u know what im saying, do u know what this means?

is it possible there was to much oil pressure when going through 3rd gear that it built up to much in the turbo so it forced a way out "oil seals"

if so would getting an oil catch can fix that and lower the oil pressure?

first off if you're worried about oil pressure (too high or too low), get an oil pressure gauge...

I got a cheap-ish calibre one from supercheap auto, its such a good quality unit, install was pretty easy too. From memory it was only about 80 bucks.

But yeh, say you change from 2nd to 3rd at like 5500rpm, youl go into 3rd at about say 3500rpm, the difference of 2k rpm, will actually cause your oil pressure to drop slightly. so in any situation when ya change up gears i.e. your revs drop, your oil pressure will fall slightly.

This is cos the crank directly drives the oil pump, above a certain rpm (my x-trail's QR is about 1200), the pressure will jump up to and stay at about 100psi, from there up, it will only change about 10-15psi depending on your rpm. Pretty hard to explain, but i highly recommend getting a gauge to keep an eye on pressure, especially with the more mods you do to your RB.

But regarding the loss of power, i dunno... The power you 'feel' is always gonna go down as you go up through the gears, youl never get the same pull in 3rd as you would in 1st and 2nd. Do you mean youve got a definite drop in power in 3rd gear itself?

well i lose traction in 1st and in second it pulls hard, if i go hard in second then change to 3rd all i hear is turbo/exhaust and it doesnt feel like its moving :/

BUT if im cruising in 3rd "boost kicks in at around 4000 - 4500rpm" and i hit it when boost comes on it pulls like never before.

so i dont know whats going on with that, any idea's?

maybe your just experiencing a bit of lag...

maybe when you change into 3rd, its not quite in boost yet.

cos 4-4500rpm is quite high for a standard hi-flowed turbo, so my best bet is its just lag.

and just cos you are hearing your turbo spool, doesn't always mean its making boost, there's a thing called boost threshold

its the point at which the turbo actually starts to make boost, but in fact, your turbo is spooling up way before it actually makes a boost situation - its still spinning on idle!

maybe just chop 1st and 2nd, then keep it in 3rd and wind it out (of course where the speed limit allows)

cos i rekon when you drop into 3rd, your just under the boost threshold and not making any boost yet...

i put the stock turbo on and the car runs much better, and once again i gave it some in 3rd gear and whilest dragging it out in higher rpm

the stupid thing wanted to shoot some white smoke out the exhaust... when changing the turbo's over i did find oil in the intake piping.

does anyone have an idea on what the problem could be cause both turbo's couldnt have the same problem "not likely" the stock turbo on drove for 60,000k's on stock motor.

  • 3 weeks later...

I suggested in your other post about doing youre plugs, this is for the same reason you have here- I had the same problem, and sometimes it would sound like your going hard and really you could be getting smashed by a lancer... LOL

Gap & re-place your plugs, and you wont have that problem- another suggestion is if your run a washable POD then do it, and while your there, clean the face of you air-flow meter too- between those tow probs, you can double your power (well,at least double what your used to being pissed off about- lol)

Let me know how you go?
