I dont want to get bitched at for spreading false info so... disclaimer: I think the following is correct but I'm not 100%.

Compression test: Tests the amount of compression in a cylinder by screwing the device into a spark plug hole.

Intercooler: This isnt mine  ---> "A device which cools the air entering the carburetor or fuel injection system. Colder air has more oxygen molecules than warm air. Thus cooler air gives more power and better fuel economy. An intercooler looks like a radiator. It contains large passages for the intake flow, and uses either outside air or water directed over it to lower the temperature of the intake flow inside. Also called a "charge-air cooler" or "chargecooler." Compare "aftercooler." "

As Sumo said, it is a test that involves removing a spark plug, and inserting a 'compression' measuring dial and cranking the engine over. This forces the piston to compress, (but not there is no ignition).

The pressure can then be seen on the dial before it dissipates. If the piston rings are shagged, then the compression will be poor. Good compression is important for a healthy engine, and you can find out the required compression for your engine from workshop manuals.
