Hi,

I'm new here, my name is Sam, and i just got my 1998 r34 GT-T =]

Anyway, I'm going to get an immobiliser and stuff fitted this week but my real question is;

I here alot of stories about cars like this getting stolen, and i was wondering is it really a common thing to have your car stolen if you have a skyline? I work in melbourne city at night, and park in a fenced off (but accessable to pedestrians) carpark - One of those wilsons ones with the "24 hour CCTV surveillance", which im sure would help alot ;) . Is that high risk if im parking at a place like that most days with the car being unattended for reasonably long periods?

Get a killer 3G /pager alarm and possibly a GPS tracker. and a clublock to slow them down for 2 seconds more.

dont leave anything of value exposed on the seat

or buy a shit box to drive to work.

skylines are a big target for joy rides, parts etc. but its more about common sense , dont park in the dark, dont pound Bass into a car park, like the pied piper for thieves. dont brag up your car to coworkers(I had one steal my radio and quite work that same day) dont leave a ipod on the seat, etc

remember a pro

if they want it , its gone no matter what you do , your only hope is a multi layer security setup/deter BEFORE they break in..

or a big ass dog to sleep in it. I fear the dents and paint key jobs about as much as break ins.

mate... in my personal opinion there is no point in buying any of that rubbish....

If someone wants to steal your car... they WILL as mentioned above just watch where you park it and such... if you dont live to far from work just catch public transport thats what i do...

As for the car park... that 24 hour surveilance camera is not going to do you any favours and the police and "Security" for the car park do not help one bit....

Skylines are also unfortunately a target... and the people who steal cars nowdays are very quick and know what their doing....

bro put one of these in your car, they cant steal it if they cant put it in gear :( well they can still steal it but they'll be quite suprised when they c it

that wont stop anyone, a tow truck fixes that problem in 30 seconds or less.

dont freak out mate, just insure it for agreed value and be smart about it. I drive mine as a daily without issues even in the worse parts of town.

I wont go into my methods of ensuring security for obvious reasons.lol

you bought it to drive so drive the wheels off it..lol

Mongoose alarm for the win, get a tilt sensor and a pager with the m80's, park it close to work and if they do use a truck atleast u will know and can hopefully catch them trying to get away. or like suggested a gps tracker and hide it really well !!!!.

the m60 is also aus standard , all black wiring.. but its 2 point instead of 3 point immobilisation - is there that much off a difference going to 3 point?

can a pager / tilt sensor be added to the m60s? the car is booked in on thurs and theyve already ordered the m60 so yeah =/.

Im getting it installed at a place called AES (car electronics specialists) in Geelong where i live.. ive had stuff done there before with my old cars and they were pretty reliable.

just a thought; if they give the car back to you in under an hour-worry. that means that I can STILL take the car in 30 sec or less as I'll have the alarm in my hand and OUT of the car.

in english: make sure the thing is installed PROPERLY. an alarm install is only as good as it's install. make sure the installer has a licence (NSW) and works for someone who has insurance / premises to do the job properly.

if you cannot afford a decent job - drive a shitbox for a few months until you CAN afford it.

They said they would need 5 hours / half a day to do it.

And they are VACC accredited (which i would say is the vic equivilant to the nsw thing) .. costing $500 for the m60 installed -which is what mongoose quoted me anyway, another 150 for a tilt sensor.

Say they install it correctly - how long would it take you then? lol :)

lol. Tilt sensor would just set off the alarm if the car has been tilted. ie. being lifted onto flat bed. With the alarm going off and car being put onto a flat bed, any person walking past will just assume its council moving an illegally parked car etc.

Pretty much no one will care if a random cars alarm is going off and if the criminals are well organised to have a flat bed and move your car onto it, an alarm isnt going to do much to them.

Professional thieves wont be phased with any alarm system/gadgets because they would know how to get around them or act when they are ringing etc

What you should aim for is to stop the local junkie/derro smashing into your car for the headunit or a joyride. Thats when a decent alarm like the mongoose m80, club lock, window tint and hiding valuables will help. I wouldnt waste $150 for the tilt sensor, id instead use that money for glass break sensor, ultrasonic sensors or microwave sensor. This way the alarm will go off if the window is broken and if anyone is standing too close to the car.

The chances of it being stolen by pro's with flatbeds are pretty slim, id put my money down on the local derro having a go first :( then again i cant be held responsible if it catches the eyes of the pro's but im sure there are much better cars to pick from if they going into all that effort.

Only difference a pager will make is you'll be alerted as soon as the alarm goes off and can run out and start cracking some heads, or be confronted by a group of local derros.

Pagers can still be jammed, and most clublocks wont last even a minute.

As mentioned all you can really do is hope to keep the small time snatch and grab low lifes away, make sure to get fully comp insurance as at the end of the day that will be your best protection.

haha yeah you make alot of good points there rekin.. (will prob go with a glass break / ultrasonic sensor)..already has a really dark tint so all good there.

Will ring the insurance company and get the full comp changed to agreed value from market too .. then hope for the best :P

    • 1. Factory knock sensors for now, honestly the RB26 OEM knock sensors seem ok as they're flat response instead of resonant type but they appear to be internally grounded to the block. If I do replace the sensor it would just be to get ones that are not internally grounded so a differential input can be used to reject common mode noise. Definitely plan on fixing this as a part of the tuning process. 2. Never deliberately induced knock, though I guess I could try that experiment if I really wanted to. 3. All of this is basically on a stock engine + ECU, only modification is HKS GTIII-SS turbos and a Nismo plenum. Currently I run it with the wastegate solenoid unplugged so it won't try to raise boost past wastegate pressure.
    • After being peer-pressured into paying $100 for the MW remakes, got BO6 on XBox Game Pass. I think that's worth it.
    • That's a given!  Bit hard to powdercoat it properly without removing them! 😁
    • No detail on compressor or turbine sizes, which doesn't help with housing size selection with that kit. However, from SR20DET mucking about and money torching perspective, a GTX2860R Gen 2 w/ 0.64 (46mm inducer) will do ~260kW on E85 about 1.5bar of boost. All in before 3000pm, which cause a gearbox to shatter. Now imagine the same turbo, on a modern motor with an extra 0.5L of displacement, and heaps of cam timing adjustability (not an on/off affair like the Nissan shit boxes). If this was my car (which I would never own or consider buying, ever!), I would go for a nice twin scroll setup, and a G30-660. Gates plumbed back, no silly shit. Lean on the cam timing, big displacement to create a flat-ish torque curve.
