Hi Guys,

I think I need a new battery for my car dude.

When I go to start it sometime it will just tick once and not even crank over.

And also it seem like it is strugglying to start once it starts cranking.

My questions is has anyone changed their battery before for a R33 Skyline?

What type/brand is good and what sort of rating is needed for a Skyline.

I don't know much about car batteries beside that is starts the damn thing :D

So any advice would be helpfull.

Also how much are they usually? I have seen some that are in their $100 to some that are close to $300 bucks?!

Yes changing the battery is simple and has been covered before. Try a search.

But basically you need to make sure the battery you buy as a replacement needs to be approximatly the same size as your existing one to fit in the tray and not be too tall as to intefere with speakers or such. It also needs to have quite small terminals to fit.

Since it is in the boot the battery should be a sealed type, also known as maintenance free. It should not have caps that can be opened to replace water.

You can pick one up from $60 and up.

Hi

I had to buy a battery as well about two days after I got my R33. The previous owner hadn't driven it much for over 3 months.

Anyway - I bought an Optima D51L - cost a FORTUNE - $315 - but that included over half an hours labour cos - and here's the important bit - the previous battery was just your STANDARD car battery, therefore unsealed and the b..... thing had spat watery acid c... EVERYWHERE and the guys at battery place had to strip EVERYTHING out and wash it all down with soapy water and bicarb...

Also the old battery only had 280 cold crank amps which apparently was no good for anything....

So the moral to the story is to ALWAYS (as mentioned in a previous post) put a SEALED battery in the boot of a car. I live in Canberra and apparently here in the ACT it is illegal to have an unsealed 'normal' car battery in the boot of a car.

Also make sure you get a battery with decent cold crank amps. This new one has 500 cold crank amps. AS I said in a similar post a month or so ago which I think got lost in the forum 'death' - my car almost starts without me turning the key!!!!! :cheers:

Mine came over with a crappy jap battery that only lasted about ten cranks before dying.

I went and bought a Yuasa battery. Get the dude that you're buying off to check that the terminals will fit and that the footprint fits into the existing holder. Mine has a capacity of 425 CCA (I think) and it cost me around $130.

Best money ever spent.

Yeah I went down to some battery place where they had a battery that will fit the Skyline R33 along with the right size terminals. It cost $99 bucks but I think it is only like a 380CCA.

Does that matter? Like i'm not running any big ass system or anything. Just want it to start well and last long. My current battery now goes flat if the car is not started in 3 days!!

check your ground wires before you change your battery buddy. mine use to click sometimes and not even turnover. turned out the battery wasnt charging because the ground wire in the engine bay was dirty. Car starts in 1-2seconds now with no trouble at all. Check your voltage at the alternator and then at the battery to see if theres much difference.

Don't know how old the battery is as it was already there when I got the car, but i'm guessing that it came over from Japan as all it has is japanese writting and it is a Panasonic?!?!

Are these the original battery the Skyline came out the factory with?!

I think it is charging, after a jump start and driving around for 15-20 things are normal again.

It is a weird glitch, as it only happens sometime when it will just tick and not crank. But now I have notice the car is taking longer to crank over.

The battery that was in mine had Skyline R33 written on it, I just changed mine I got a Delkor 22F610D and got the terminals and the leads changed.

I converted mine to an Odyessy total seal. I can get them in the country areas. I tried and couldn't get the Yuasa battery [it was a jappa batt, even Yuasa Aust. said no go].

I had to change my leads etc, and weld up a new battery holder setup, did it all myself and ended up with a top shelf job [if you want it done right......do it yourself].

The Odyessy battery is a queer animal, nil maintenance, long life, and big crank power, they are a bit more exy though.

400a for the 800amp, and 600a for the 1000amp [i think I've got an 800, I'll check on that, but it has a few other other attributes that are supposed to make them the 'ducks guts' of batteries.

Have a look on their web site [assuming they got one] or get a pamphlet. It will explain it heaps better than I can.

It rapid recharges after heavy load, has a big cycle rate, can be deep cycled, long shelf life, etc etc

    • I'm firmly on the "zero compliance is good compliance" for FUCAs. I'd be looking to solid metal joints even if the primary reason for having them is because they facilitate the twist in the arm. I have never been more happy with the way the front suspension behaves than I have since I got rid of the FUCA bushes. Even the thin little (short lived) poly bushes in the Whiteline adjustables have too much compliance for my liking. It probably won't be long before I have sphericals nearly everywhere, probably including both top and bottom arms in the rear, and I'll start complaining about the increased costs for dental work. But I will be enjoying the driving more, I'm sure.
    • Plus, you'll get great experience in bedding in pads!
    • I have offset Nismo brackets so the fact the gktechs can pivot is less important to me. I have 170mm JIC arms with bushings - but they provide no adjustment and I'm not sure whiteline eccentric bushings will fit them (I don't want to ruin the bushings currently in them to find out). Ideally I want something with bushings + adjustment; hence why I'd like to find a pair of these. Unfortunately they aren't easy to find.
    • @Vee37 How much do you really care about finding these pads again? If your pads are quiet, work well and produce minimal dust, really isn't that enough? If you are set on finding the exact pads again, I suppose I'd do something like this -  Visit your local Jax, find out what brand of pads they carry. If the Jax workshop you previously went to had the pads on the shelf, then you can almost guarantee it will be of said brand.   I'm guessing you don't have the receipt for the previous work and pads. Can you visit a Jax workshop and see if they can look up your previous job to see what pads were fitted?  Still no luck? Put your stalker hat on, find the staff that used to work at the Jax store and ask them. Talk to local workshops, try to find out where the mechanics went to. Talk to Jax workshops, maybe they relocated to another workshop. When it comes to mechanics, its a small world. You'd be surprised how easy it is to track someone down. If these ideas don't work, shit will start getting crazy very quickly.... You could find out every brand and model of pad that fits that car... and try them individually ticking each off the list if it wasn't the one you were looking for.... If you go down this path your going to want to learn how to swap pads yourself, it is very easy, takes minimal tools and space. If you have room to park the car you have room to swap the pads. Plus you have the advantage of making sure all the brake hardware goes back in so they won't squeal!
