My friend, I do not have "a problem".

I just cannot fathom your argument that driving a Fezz could somehow make you a more respected businessman, I really don't see that, nor do most people I'd suspect.

I can however understand and respect that you're obviously an enormous Italian vehicle fan, and are "defending" your love. And that's cool :)

After all, second hand Italian cars need to sell to someone, therefore, someone's gotta love them! It's just not me ;)

I had to award a large contract for consulting on a major road project earlier in the year. One guy did the power lunch thing, turned up in his Maserati, paid for an expensive lunch and just came off as a massive douche that likes to waste money before i had even spoken to him. They guy that got the job was actually slightly more expensive but was more about the job than trying to make himself look good, i would hate to think anyone based giving work on the basis of the car that someone drove and the show that someone put on, no one i know does and most would be inclined to steer away from the guy posing in his super car, but apparently it happens :S

Also i have lots of friends that know nothing about cars...and even they recognise that the GTR is not some lowly priced Nissan when they see one drive past

The reason i didnt give it to him was that he looked exactly like some one who spend every cent he earned and if the contract did fall through we wouldnt have gotten a cent from him because he probably owned nothing. The other guy looked more circumspect they both offered almost exactly the same thing...but i actually belived the other guy would deliver on his proposal. Im also a beliver that if they really are as good as they say they wont need to make a big show and dance to 'lure' me in, It may just be me but anyone that takes the look at me approach feels like they have somthing to hide.

I agree with Kujotk actually although not everyone is looking to use the vehicle as a business tool, it does make sense. Just look at what an R35 with a workshop logo will do to a business image. Not only does it automatically gain respect from a majority (not all) of people, the workshop instantly becomes the go to place - even if they suck at tuning.

Well maybe the H2 owner couldn't give a shit about track racing, mabe he wants to go 4wding instead, maybe he just feels much safer in the H2?

That is a bad example....if you buy an H2 you arent going 4wd nor are you safer :)

Hmmm...I'm with Kujo on this one. Image is everything in the business world...you can't turn up to a business meeting in a T shirt no matter how good a worker you are. Sure, in your example the Maserati didn't impress...but that's because he was targeting the wrong people. You got the idea this guy thought he was above you because you don't drive one yourself. Nor would the Gallardo work well when quoting up clients in the floor prep business...but you're targeting the wrong people in both these scenarios. You're talking about tradie work, even if it is large/expensive contract work. In a corporate management environment high up where every man and his dog is in a Mercedes or a BMW...if you're the odd one out driving the Aussie sedan and you don't atleast hint at the fact you have something better in your garage at home...colleagues will take you at face value and draw a correlation between your success and your image. Not everyone does it, but most people do. It's kind of sad, yes, but that's the way we are...shallow beings :)

When I was doing sales repping for mechanical workshops I made an effort to dress with a polo shirt and steel caps...and it worked well, because mechanics don't want to see some douche turn up in a shirt and shiny shoes trying to sell them something. Also drove an E series Falcon around too...they don't want to see you in a better car than them. Used to share alot of car stories with them too because they often felt like I was one of them. Now when I went to see buyers for large distribution channels...it was a different story...and a very different image I took on. Would have been more than happy to have had a 360 with me for those meetings.

I didnt think he was above me, after all he was the one begging me to give him just over a million dollars worth of work! My concern was that he was all style and no substance, despite the fact that he said all the right things. If i had people working for me that are impressed by cheap tricks like that i would be sorely dissapointed...and ensure that they never got to handle appointing consultants alone again.

I didn't say you thought he was above you, just that you thought he thought he was above you...top shit etc. You were awarding a million dollar contract but it wasn't your million dollars. Do you think you'd get the same impression of that guy if you yourself drove a Maserati to work and lunch meetings? Cause I reckon you would have had more to talk about besides business if you did :)

Like I said, he was targeting the wrong industry with the wrong playing cards...if I was vying for your contract I'd be showing up in a late model 4x4 or utility myself...

That's the other good point...it's not always about having a good image, but it's about not having a bad image. If you're driving an old piece of shit...where is all the money you're making going?

Argh its so slow to write on my phone on this thread than a pc.....

I have an example right now,

I am in Kalgoorlie, I have arrived by plane, I am looking into investing in a company over here, I expect them to have money, They pick me up in a new black S500 Long wheel base, that doesn't impress me because that is what you expect from a company that is meant to be going well and who is looking for more investors. If I was picked up in a 5 year old holden commodore, that would give me a very very different image of the company. I'm not saying that the image is going to be correct to how well the company is going, but as i said it has more chance of being a company worth putting some money into. If i was pciked up in an older commodore i would have 2 things going through my head.

1: How they arn't bothered to keep the client comfortable or they don't think i'm worth anything to them.

2: There is a larger chance that they are a potentially struggleing company and my investments aren't safe.

Image is everything, even if a great image doesnt change your decision to like them better, a bad image can influence a decision....

but on the other hand if you picked me up in a 3200gt i wouldn't invest in your company because i would realise you have no class, no taste and spend a lot of money on a piece of turd with a historical badge

:)

Geez, took the words from my uneducated, obviously stupid, not to mention poor mouth!

Actually, I'm glad you said it, I'm at work, and am far too busy making money to reply to this pointless thread. lol, have fun gentlemen

Sorry for some reason cant quote

Tom I see your point, I would expect a nice car at the airport...but by the same token i wouldnt care if it was a GTR or a Ferrari infact i would see that as kinda stupid. Both dont make great airport pick up mobiles! I would also rather see someone putting that money back into thier company if i was to invest into it! By the same token i do agree that a 5 year old commodore isnt good either!

As for the car being an idicator of success....well I know very wealthy people who do indeed own a fancy car ect....but i also know many more who put that money into the share market or houses. My brother in law is a good example, He owns a new V8 calais, he uses it for work (investment banker) that wouldnt impress some people but im guessing that when they saw his 2million dollar home that he ows nothing on the might change thier minds. Where as the guy driving whatever exotic it may be could be renting an apartment somwhere, who knows!

Anyway what im really trying to say is that i dont necessarily think the guy with the better car will always get the deal as you said, Depending on the person it could go either way. So many people i know would even maybe lean the other way because of the negative image it may portyay, Ie flippant with money, thinks they are awesome ect ect.

Birds i wasnt doing the construction contracts it was to do with Environmental approvals and monitoring, so nothing to do with the construction at all really!

I will have to agree to disagree with you, pretty much every one i know who doesnt know has seen a R35 has been impressed by it, they dont even care or even realise half the time that its a Nissan! And people who do know cars will know that a GTR is worth just as much as a 360 so they wont perfer one over the other either!

But thats just the way i see it!

This thread is out of control!!!

There is a local company here called the Supercar Club. http://www.supercarclub.com.au/ If you have plenty of coin you can join their club and drive all of their cars including both the F360CS and an R35 GTR

If you aren't that loaded you can even do one of their subsidury day events through http://www.supercarevents.com/ and in one day drive a range of cars again.

I've been lucky enough to drive pretty much all of them and I can honestly say if anyone with an open mind drives the whole range I'd be staggered if at the end they said "If I could take any one of these cars home with me it would be one of the ones with a horse on it".

There is an aura about the Fez's no doubt - but the enjoyment of driving one is definitely more about being in a Ferrari (and listening to it!) than it is about driving a good car.

Just my two bobs. I can see where in the top end of the corporate world where a Ferrari would be seen as superior to the GT-R (although I am suprised at how many rich people, know and respect the GT-R)...but my argument would be that when you are that high up the food chain in the corporate world...a 10 year old 360 might be looked upon as a bit old and dare I say a try hard. I would suggest that a more modern (and comfortable) F430 or 612 would make the 'right' impression...but most likely something like a Merc CL600 or AMG equivelant is the type of car that an exec high flyer would take clients out in, an older 360 may come across as noisy and slightly nasty drug dealers car!

To be honest I love them all, I'd love to have all of them, but I love the GT-R the most, for me it's simply the best in so many ways.

Some of the anti-Ferrari comments here are a bit harsh and many miss the point that its not just about the speed, on the other hand im suprised at some of the anti-R35 comments, regardless of the badge it is a stand out supercar and it's obvious alo of people feel that way...the sales speak for themselves.

I don't give a fark whether people go there! I don't have any business relationships there - I'm jusy lucky that my good mate (and Targa nav) is the boss there so I just get to try them out from time to time when they aren't booked out.

:D

But actually driving cars is a strange thing. My most "hated" car now at the Club is the Aston Martin DB9 - now who'd have thunk that after watching Top Gear hey? But it rubbish for a number of reasons IMO - I mean it even has a worse gearbox than what your Maserati has and who'd have thought that was possible hey!? I've done an BMW M Sports day at Phillip Island and was shocked to leave there thinking the M6 was actually pretty good and that the M5 wasn't what I was hoping for.

In the end it will still be a personal choice on the best - but if you do get the chance to drive all of those cars I can almost garantee if you are a driver then the car you will choose will be something from Germany rather than Italy (and that choice could be one of many). But if you really prefer the experience of being in the cars rather than the driving of them then even in the battle of the Italians I'd be suprised if the big cow doesn't get the tick first.

Thats your opinion but the 3200gt with the boomerang tail lights was voted the worlds best looking car.

Is this the car you mentioned?? If it is then... I can take the Ferrari hater or the Nissan doubters but this is just too much....

    • I think my main complaint with your idea is that there is a veneer of idealism spread across it. You want the simple numbers to make it easier, but all they will do is make it easier for someone to come to the wrong conclusion because the fine details will kick them in the nuts. As it is right now, the tiny bit of arithmetic is NOT the obstacle to understanding what will fit and what will not fit. The reality of trying it is what determines whether it will fit. If you had a "standard rule" that R34 GTT guards have that magic 100mm space from the hub face to whichever side you were worried about, and someone said "excellent, this wheel is only 98mm in that direction, I'll just go spend $4k on them and jam them on my sick ride".....they would just as likely find out that the "standard rule" is not true because the rear subframe is offset to one side by a fairly typical (but variable) 8mm on their car and they only have 92mm on one side and 108 on the other.
    • It still combines inches with mm, especially when you have .5 inches involved, and mm and inches that can go in either direction. This would give a clear idea on both sides of the rim, right away, with no arithmetic. Even better if somebody gives you the dimensions of the arch of multiple cars. i.e GTR may be 125mm, a A80 Supra may be 117mm, or something along those lines. Yes, you can 'know' that going from a 10in rim to a 10.5in rim with the same offset moves both sides about 6mm, but you still have to 'know' that and do the math. Often it's combined. People are going from 9.5 +27 to 10.5 +15. You may do the math to know it, but if it was going from (I had to go look it up to be sure) 241mm/2 - 27 - 93.5mm from the center line to (more math) 266/2 - 15 (118mm) from the center line. Versus 93mm vs 118mm. It's right there. If you know you have a GTT with 100mm guards you can see right away that one is close to flush and the other absolutely won't work. And when someone says "Oh the GTR is 120mm" suddenly you see that the 10.5 +15 is about perfect. (or you go and buy rims with approximately 118mm outward guard space) I think it's safe to say that given one of the most common questions in all modified cars is "How do offsets work" and "How do I know if wheels will fit on my car" that this would be much simpler... Of course, nothing will really change and nobody is going to remanufacture wheels and ditch inches and offset based on this conversation :p We'll all go "18x9+30 will line up pretty close to the guards for a R34 GTT (84mm)" but 'pretty close' is still not really defined (it is now!) and if you really care you still have go measure. Yes it depends on camber and height and dynamic movement, but so do all wheels no matter what you measure it for.
    • But offsets are simple numbers. 8" wheel? Call it 200mm, near enough. +35 offset? OK, so that means the hub face is that far out from the wheel centreline. Which is 2s of mental arithmetic to get to 65mm to outer edge and 135mm to inner. It's hardly any more effort for any other wheel width or offset. As I said, I just close my eyes and can see a picture of the wheel when given the width and offset. That wouldn't help me trust that a marginal fitment would actually go in and clear everything, any more than the supposedly simple numbers you're talking about. I dunno. Maybe I just automatically do numbers.
    • Sure! But you at least have simple numbers instead of 8.5 inches +/mm, relative to your current rims you do maths with as well, and/or compare with OEM diameter, which you also need to know/research/confirm..
