Are you sure he put in the claim himself / it wasn't in his parent's name? It just sounds hard to believe that insurance companies, somewhat reputable for trying to get out of claims, should process a claim with no attention paid to driver status...I wouldn't risk it myself because they had every legal right to refuse a payout on that claim. Shame he didn't get to learn his lesson.

It might of been in his parents name.... but I doubt it as he took out the loans n shit to buy the car, but I'm not 100% sure. Although when he totalled his car, cops were there in seconds and ambos, so they knew he was driving it...

Hmm... what i dont get is why the RTA let P plater's register turbo cars under their names when they know we cant drive them?? Beats me....

IMO !!! if the LAW really did not want "P-Platers" to drive around in turbo cars.... THEN WHY THE @#$$ LET US REGISTER IT UNDER OUR NAMES !!!

So when they pull you over they get extra revenue because you shouldn't be driving it.. DUH :(

I don't know if you have noticed or not but every government is a business, they don't give a f**k about the people living in the country.

hmmm... i understand they dont give a f**k about the people.... but i mean come on man why set such a strict law then go ahead and let them register turbo cars? i dont think its right and im surprised no one has protested....

I think if they had done that there would be a LOT less p platers driving around in turbo cars...

+1, driving around with no insurance is just stupid.

Also when you pay for your road rego what does the 3rd party thing on that mean? Does it mean that they assume you have gotten 3rd party insurance when you pay for the road rego?

The 3rd party insurance premium on your registration covers personal injury to others/yourself in the event of an accident. It also covers damage to state/council owned property, e.g. roads and signs. But it doesn't cover privately owned property, e.g. cars and buildings.

LOL it took a couple of SMS to work this one out. All cool now though...I concede I forgot to add in the "lols" at the end of my comment to suggest it was a joke :(

Again, for the record people, the e-thug sounding post was a joke...I'm not an e-thug lol.

Like i said, it's for the cash. Why would they not let you register it? Knowing well and truly young males are genuinely stubborn and will go out and buy and drive one anyway? $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

Because it's not illegal to have a high powered car registered under your name on your P plates. It is illegal to drive it though. You can pay all the bills for the car and have your 50 year old father driving the car legally.

Also, insurance will happily insure your vehicle...they're "assuming" you're not going to drive it. You'll be covered for theft, or a nominated full licence driver, and that's it. If you make a claim based on you actually driving and smashing the thing then you will be very lucky if they payout on the claim.

    • I was actually going to try and dig out a datalog with turbine speed and EMAP haha
    • Wait until @Lithium posts a compressor map and tries to explain what's going on. There is a strong possibility that the OP lives in a digital world and is not comfortable with analogue machines. A turbo is just about as analogue as it gets, with plenty of non-linear behaviours added in on top. Most of us who think we know how they work are actually only getting by on 2nd and 3rd order mental models that abstract away from the actual physics and bring it back to the sort of kindergarten level concepts we can hold in our heads. This is important when you need to hold 10 such concepts in your head at the same time. You need to reduce the complexity of the individual concepts to allow them to be simultaneously held and manipulated. Too much complexity in the base models makes it very difficult to make them work with each other mentally.
    • It could be. It might not be. It is impossible to know without context by asking the owner or the tuner on the day and knowing what they were doing/not doing/attempting to do. You said earlier this is hard to understand because to your mind, a turbo is at full speed when it hits its spike. This is not true. The turbos actual speed is defined by how much air is being forced through it via the exhaust, unless you control it. The spike you are seeing at ~whatever RPM it 'spools' at, is where boost control is starting. If there were no boost control the turbo absolutely would be spinning much faster at 7000rpm than 3000rpm, every single time, on every single engine. Boost control keeps the boost controlled within the limits you ideally want. If it were uncontrolled you would have two scenarios 1) You have a turbo that hits peak RPM and CFM (not boost) at the redline of the engine. This would work, but most people want more boost earlier. 2) You have a turbo that hits peak RPM well before the redline of the engine (say, 3500), and you explode the turbo by redlining the engine. (say, 7000rpm). If you don't want exploding things, or lag, you design a turbo system to come on when you want the boost to be useful, and then not overspin itself into oblivion by using some form of boost control, to control the boost pressure accordingly.
