I have a problem with a r32 rb20det pinging at high RPM/engine load. The car has a mines ECU, cat back exhaust, running 10psi, standard intercooler and not really maintained all that well if at all in its 130,000k life. Basically i want to have a go at fixing it before i send it off to a workshop. I have a few things i want to try and just want to know if anyone else has any idea.

1. Check spark plugs. (maybe the coil packs could be getting on)?

2. Check fuel pressure regulator for a leaky diaphram. (dont have a Guage to check fuel pressure).

3. Try moving the crank angle sensor a tiny bit anti-clock wise then drive it and see if pinging has gone. (no timing light).

4. What sort of millage do the rb20det fuel injectors generally start to have problems?

Anyone have any other ideas on some simple tests or procedures to try before the step of going to a workshop.

An easy test would be to swap the mines ecu with a stock ecu and see if the pinging goes away. Provided the car always runs on 98 octane this could fix your problem.

Mines ecu's are tuned for Jap high octane fuel and not 98 aussie stuff. This could be why its pinging at high revs.
