Possible Scam! 1998 R34gt-t Daily Telegraph November 6 2009

Hi All

Im not sure if this is the right place to post this , but I would think it would be the most revelant as its advertised as a Skyline for sale and I want the rest of the SAU'ers to be notified and to be careful.

The reason why its under 'possible scam' is because I'm still in negotiations with the seller via email and still trying to gather enough evidence to propose if it is truly a scam and report it to the authorities.

This ad is under the Daily Telegraph, Friday, November 6, 2009. Page 86 under title 'Cars under $10k'

The ad states ' Nissan Skyline 1998, R34 GT-T . VIN 6U90000ER4004970, $6900, 0295803435, [email protected] '

Well I thought WOW r34 for under 7k! This is awesome , but even still I was thinking this is too good to be true!

So I emailed the bloke, here is the trail of emails below :

There were a few key points that made me weary throughout the emails.

That he is located oversea's in England and that he moved there recently and his uncle had passed away and left him this car under his will.

He wanted me to transfer the money for a deposit to a site called 'Alertpay' which is another payment processor like Paypal. However he stated that the money will be refunded if unsatisfactory in which I know Alertpay does not do escrow services. That means its up to his discretion to send it back or not.

He sent me a website called ' http://www.DAS.AutoExpress.com.au.tt ' which when I tried to do a google search just for company name , it did not exist, and also under a few lists of websites reporting to scams , a few popped up under ' DAS-Auto-Express '

He told me that the car is in a cargo box at the moment and cannot be inspected but will have to pay a fee to inspect it.

Did not reply to my email when requested '

Hi Trevor

May I also have a scanned image of :

A current certificate of registration

A safety check report (pink slip*) that is not more than one month old

Proof that the person selling the car is the owner (which is yourself) -- such as a driving licence and sales receipt.

Also the following Information required :

Vehicle registration number

The engine number

The vehicle identification number (VIN) or chassis number

Apologies if this is inconvenient however I will greatly appreciate the effort to provide me this information.

And lastly I noticed that he made key common grammar errors created when English isn't your first language which led me to believe he may be from a Asian descent as these websites have been marked as 'Chinese scammer websites' ( No racism intended , I'm Chinese myself)

I'm not sure if this is valuable to anyone but I just wanted to put it out there for anyone who was thinking of purchasing this car to be careful and get as much information as possible.

I will let you know if there is anymore update.

Any advice or suggestions is also appreciated.

That screams 'scam' to me. It's not that disimilar to some of the scams i've seen on ebay over the years, and this seems to be a slight derivation on them. Nonetheless its always interesting to discuss the said vehicle with the scammer and to see the way they deal with you. Is interesting.

The pictures of the car appear to have been taken off a particular dealerships website up here in Brisbane, called motorman imports. If for instance ones looks at the attached advert (its just one of their current ones) - http://www.autoline.com.au/vehicle/1442032.html - you will notice the background is identical ie fence posts sizes and colours, same trees showing above the fenceline, even has the same electricity tower in the background. So whilst I couldn't find this particular car as one of their current stock, I'd say that it has been one of their previous ones and this scammer is using them to pull of his scam.

Hey thats a bit harsh man !! We're supposed to help eachother here, not act like that. He was asking our thoughts on this, he wasn't posting that he'd fallen for it and was asking for our advice/help afterwards. Give him credit for that ffs .....

there are so many scams like this , moderately priced items that you have to front money , to buzzed out money transferrign companies , adn there are always conditions such as the car is in the middle of nowhere in the northern teriitiory , yet hes offerign free transport to any state and he is in england but has left a car that is packaged!!!! and since when did someone want 50% deposit just on prior to the first inspection lol !! common sense

i was looking into that car for sale too a few months ago, which had sold around then too - was advertised on carsales, ebay etc. for $27,000

so yeah definitely not what would be advertised for 7k!

Hey mate ,

if you actually read the whole post from top to bottom , the real purpose of this post was to help out anyone if they were actually planning on purchasing it ( some people can be fooled very easily ) and to warn what scams actually look like , what to look for and how it can be present.

Having a narrowminded comment like that from you clearly states your value within the community.

Lets hope you get scammed in the future and maybe you can learn some manners =]
