Sorry to post a non-skyline related question but I have an old KE30 sitting in a paddock that i'm hoping to get running today. It's been off the road for 2 years. Hopefully (touch wood) a bit of love and she'll at least go. I'm wondering what oil would be recommended? Also I suspect the points are rooted, are these off the shelf items? Is there anything else worth touching before I start it up?

the little toyota 3k motor will probably run on canola oil!

nah, ring up your local auto parts store - they should be able to tell ya all you need to know about these little beasts, and points should pretty easy to get a hold of.

might need to give the carbie a spray with some stuff to help her kick over too

you could always have a browse around the rollaclub site as well.

how many kms roughly... how many oil leaks?? and how much sludge?? assuming its a 3k or 4k... they will run on anything.

a mate of mine got one of these and we cleaned it all up... did the points, plugs, carby kit, tuned it, got it running sweet as..

then we changed the oil...

went from good compression to no compression.. ran like shit, blew smoke, etc. what happened when we flushed it is we flushed the build up that was sealing the pistons and put in a thin (read: not grease) oil and it just wrecked it.

id suggest if its an old motor thats been around the block a few times, just run something like castrol gtx or gtx2.. reasonably thick. dont worry about anything for modern engines.. and dont worry about ones for high km engines.. as they are generally aimed at newerish cars that have done a few kms, like taxis etc.

cheers

Linton

Thanks for your help guys.. and you were all too right. Couldn't believe it after a bit of tidying up, filling the points a little, spraying some WD40 into the pistons, pouring some 20-50w in, hand turning it a few times, and a big jump start... off she went merry as anything :). can't wait to spend some time with this car.

well done mate, these cars just keep going ang going with a bit of maintenance, and they can take quite a beating (from experience).

if you're laid back about it's future life overall;
