I disagree, last night took mine out to a dead back road, launched from 3k revs very little tyre spin and it launched hard without an issue, redlined it through all the gears and drove quite freely and smoother around turns then my other car by far at high speed

WTF has that got to do with HICAS?  Do you actually know what HICAS is supposed to do?  It's not a traction control.

HICAS is supposed to move the rear wheels to invoke a slip angle earlier than would occur under passive drag along of the rears (caused by the front's making the car start to rotate).  It is supposed to make it feel "snappier" on turn in.  Whoch it does, as long as you're not on the verge of losing grip.  Now, that "as long as" is fine, up to about 7/10ths.  After that, as you drive harder, especially as you push right up near the limits, the rear will be on the verge of breaking free and a skilled driver will be working to balance the steering and throttle inputs to control that.  The last thing a skilled driver wants is for some 3pt IQ computer system to be raggedly sawing away at the rear steering control trying to do what it does, because it actively fights against what the drive is trying to do. It is a shit system.  Even worse, all you have to do to make a Skyline turn in better than it does with HICAS is simply upgrade all the suspension - which we all do anyway.  Some bigger ARBs, better dampers, some bushes and a decent alignment are 50x better than HICAS.

So, please consider that set of facts.

Yes i know what hicas is meant to do, its a rear steering assist unit designed to help improve handling around turns both at low and high speeds, its more noticeable at high speeds, what you describe is 100% different to what actually happened, all it did for me was improve my control as its designed to do and as i said previously it did not "fight" me for control, those are the facts, all your doing is repeating your view thinking you know everything which obviously you dont, if you did then my r33 should have acted the way you state more so for the fact that it needed an alignment when i done it last night, so it should have been worse for me, each gear change i hit my limiter everytime, from 0 to past 180 on the speedo

The road wasnt straight, just didnt have any really sharp turns but has a few bends

I think the key thing everyone is missing in your post is that HICAS is supposed to kick in hard when you are about to lose control around, say, a sharp corner, and helps balances the steering to avoid this, but from the sounds of things you weren't going around a tight corner and you weren't losing control (in a bad way) so that's why HICAS didn't kick-in as such.

I personally find the HICAS system to be a supportive system as when I take on corners hard I can actually feel the independent rear wheel steering assist mechanism kick in which, in my opinion, can only help.

I am sure my wife's 162TSI Tiguan would perform better than a stock R32~34 GT-R around turns

Yeah, so can my 2019 Toyota Kluger but who's comparing, right?

Like, come on man, stop adding insult to injury.

's Tig..

I still have HICAS on my R33, and agree on a spirited mountain run it's not that noticeable (as GTSBoy says, 7/10ths vs 9+/10th), when i take it to the track though, it's borderline terrifying, so unpredictable. Really need to remove it one of these days.

This is an honest question - but I've never driven a GTST only GTRs...is the HICAS on both cars the same and works similarly?

Yep, I drove a R34 GT-R around Japan.. was a piece of shit.

Needed a single, and HICAS delete :)

I bought my R34 GTR with upgraded twin turbos so wouldn't know to comment on stock set up but this is interesting.

Uumm...never knew GTST's have HICAS...dumb of me, I know to assume.

That also brings into what your car is used for as well, different uses have different setups, for example, i wouldnt take a car built to drag race out drifting or track racing

why would you even build a car then?

The more money I've poured into my car, the more I've taken it to Wakefield Park to enjoy. There's simply not enough road and rules for a built car on our streets.

    • I don’t really have any ideas how to set the timing on the CAS 😂, sounds like the top, sounds like it maybe misfiring as well as ticking,  got the box sorted 😌, must of been a air bubble on the clutch side
    • Use a 2' length of hose (that's 2 foot, not 2 inches) as a stethoscope to localise the source of the ticking. From cam covers? From exhaust or turbo manifold gasket? From injectors? From lower down in the engine? Etc. Use a timing light to set the timing. Put Redline Lightweight Shockproof in the box. It's not the very best thing for the box, but it will take a box that refuses to engage a gear with other oil, and make it engage a gear. I had to put it in when I installed the R33 box I have in my car. It would not select ANY gear when running. Smurf jizz made it work. That was >10 years ago and I still use it. I'm stuck with it now. Failing that - rebuild the box.
    • Well done Duncan. The fuel tank bulkhead lid is also in great condition (some of mine were stuffed). These are now out of production and good ones like that are becoming hard to come by.
    • Wow that's a steal, you've done well there.
