Bunta
There was a bunch of us at turn 12 talking about the r34's bad luck esspecially given all it's testing days and other events where it seems to have had zero engine issues. What can be done though to close the gap to the jap teams for the next superlap? Lose lots of weight out of the R34 and wait till advan makes wider rubber the one thing all the really fast cars had was silly low weight and big rubber Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/296249-superlap-2010-ramblings/page/53/#findComment-5250492 Share on other sites
NZM.031
What can be done though to close the gap to the jap teams for the next superlap? more low... more stiff... more noise... more wheel track... less weight.... and more testing with big fans and streamers or smoke... the only thing not on that list is more power. Marlin
The answer is a long one, too long to do now while I'm supposed to be working, but; It must be said the 34 could have gone quicker if we hadn't effectively lost two full days (Thursday and Friday) due to the engine issue. No excuses made or needed though, Mark and the crew did a great job I think. Saturday was the first time the car ran at full health. We'd consulted with the Japenese Yoki man and he described how to get the very most from the rubber. This we did, and instantly pulled over a second off the previous best time. Unfortunately the track was past it's best by the time Mark's fastest lap was recorded though. A fact born out that the two front running cars were around a second of their previous bests when Mark recordered his 34.1. I think if we had it all together when the track was at its best, lopping another full second off the car's time would be highly likely. We also had Murray Coote on hand to make some suspension adjustments to the car, and every time it went Mark said it felt better. To highlight the improvements made just in the few chances had to run it, the car picked up over 20klm/h in turn 1 apex speed, without sacrificing straight line peak speed. So yes, there is plenty left in the car without major changes, just finessing the package that is already there. We haven't really had any proper testing when the car has been the constant (always changing aero stuff for instance) , there have been many many changes done concurrently, but now it is where is will be for a while, hopefully we can just do some laps, and make subtle changes to setup to try and gain an improvement. It's worth noting I've been told recently from a current F1 aero engineer, that there is simply no one and nowhere in Australia that knows enough about vehicle aero to warrant going much farther down that path. Zoom mag style streamers and smoke don't really cut it. Wider rubber is coming which will be fantastic! The Cyber car only had 5mm to spare each side when it went onto the 34's car trailer, so they're about 100mm wider than us. Heaps. Boosted Zed
Who was the poor bugger that had to drive Russ' spare block down from brisbane thursday night? Impressive commitment. I had my doubts but Russ made it happen and pulled it off. Minor miracle. Roy yes a relaxing weekend for the Slot Car. Still waiting for custom dry sump pump. We will be in the mix next year. The weather held off nicely and a massive weekend. Marlin
My buddy Elvin got that gig. Bloody legend. Big dogleg drive out to Marks late thursday night, somehow wrangled the short engine into his wagon (he's 50kg wringing wet and no engine crane), drove through the night to get the short to us by 10am. Farkin LEGEND! Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/296249-superlap-2010-ramblings/page/53/#findComment-5250713 Share on other sites

FineLine
Well said Marlin. It was a fantastic effort on mark's part to pull that 1.34 out of the bag after all the hassles and problems and limited track time they had during friday and saturday. I have no doubt they can pull another second or so by fine tuning the setup but to reach the dizzy heights of our imported friendsI think the real answer lies in weight and rubber. As russ said, If we cant get it closer to 1000 kilo we cant catch them.. Ever! The rubber Mark is using is beyond reproach, time and again he has done some amazing things on those skinny bloody pushbike tyres. My first visit to the pits was specifically to see what the imports were using, sure enough, They all had 20 litre drums rolling under their cars. I bet Mark cant wait for the advans to come in some more suitable widths. phunky_monkey
Great effort by all involved, including the organisers. Was a top weekend! Highlights for me were defintely watching the Cusco Rex and Panspeed ripping through turn 4, awesome stuff. I'll have one of each please Was also loving the ferocity of the Pulse racing Evo coming out of the final turn, it was on the gas so much earlier than the other cars. Thing has some serious punch! Big ups to the blue 180SX in Open, he was really motoring, and also to Russ Jr, great times mate! He told us it only had bolt ons on a stock bottom end, Lots of weight reduction and plenty of aero. It was a very impressive effort. Bunta
Does anyone have any details of how modified Wayne's blue 180SX was? I was extremely impressed with that time. Had a bit of a chat to him. Like Noel said it was a 220,000 km stock SR with cams and a Tomei arms turbo and was pushing around 250rwkw. It is quite stripped out and weighs in at 1080kg. suspension i beleive is usual bolt on stuff but i didnt get into detail with that because his group got called up and he had to run! N1GTR
At the end of each session it would be nice if the commentator would announce the current top 3 in each group and their times.
