What car, if its a 89-94, it's likely it takes R12 gas, I believe there is a universal gas that can go in it but is not as cold as old-school R12 (the current gas, R143a or R134a isnt compatible in R12 systems). I would guess the seals would have long dried and might need replacing.. if it's just a straight regas looking at about $100 (assuming the compressor still works)

Any autoelectrician > get a couple of quotes if you like > get a leak test; but...

It depends on...

a) if your system needs to be changed from old R12 refrigerant system to the current R134a system

b) condition of your compressor

c) condition of your condensor

d) your existing system has no leaks thru dried out seals as stated by Moodles2

When was your car manufactured?

as have been said, lots of places will do it, and provided it is as simple as putting new gas in it should only take an hour or less and should only cost $100. i've had it done for less, but i'm in a small town. they will generally vaccum out any old gas before refilling the gas.

not sure the cost if it needs the conversion done.

The auto aircon place i pass everyday always has their "Regas for summer $100" sign out, and other mechanic shop franchises advertise about the same.

I once took my Pulsar in to see if the aircon could be fixed, needed new condensor, new compressor, new fan belt, new seals etc which ended up being quoted a touch over 1k (if memory serves right)... i don't think the aircon had been used on it in many many years

as i said, i'm in a small town. but if you are in brissy it might be worth the drive up. only cost you about $40 in fuel. the place i got it done was called coola auto air. actually last time i was there there was a r33 gtr having the conversion done. the guy is an older guy, but owns about 3 or 4 toyota imports (chasers or celciors, 1 of the 2) and i think 1 has a supercharged 1uzfe in it

If it's an '88 and hasn't had the A/C system changed to the new gas refrigerant, it WILL need to be changed now. The old R12 gas can't be used anymore due to it destroying the ozone layer. Some old dudes in camarofirebirdownersaustralia.com.au (and others) might have some of the old gas left but it's all hush-hush.

I just got my A/C checked and refilled, plus a second hand cluster installed for a grand total of... $80. :D

I'm in syd tho.

    • I know there's been no posts for 3 years, but figured it wasn't worth starting a new thread for my question. The nice Japanese lady in my V36 occasionally/randomly speaks to me whilst I'm driving.  Of course my Japanese is very rusty, I'm guessing it's to do with the Nav system? Anyone have knowledge on this?
    • there are probably many ways to do it for my bosch motorsport abs we used a r33 gtst abs front knuckle and modified the rear knuckle to allow sensor to sit and read understand time, effort and $$ but reading from anywhere else  you get diff chatter etc where you lose 30% ish in signal clarity compared to the above
    • Little more work!  Did some body work on the rear wheel arches and since the paint was a cheap spray job before figured I’d do something to tide me over until I wrap the car.    Colour might not be everyone’s choice but I like it and it’s only temporary, just hate having primer from the wheel arches standing out.    Keeping an eye out for a decent set of wheels to throw on now. Wheels and tires on the car are junk
    • Its likely to be 70% road 30% track usage, track usage will increase if anything. Decided not to fit it as I cant be arsed changing the bushes on my LCAs again 🤣 I did get the below back from GKTech though so they should work together     The anti-squat kit and roll center adjusters work independently since they change the rear lower control arm's angle in different ways. The anti-squat kit adjusts the angle from front to back, which impacts anti-squat values. Roll center adjusters change the angle side to side, mainly to correct geometry on cars that are significantly lowered. They might affect each other a tiny bit, but overall, you can think of them as separate.
    • What are you doing with the car? street car or race car? People get hung up on the squat of the s/r chassis rears. There is positives to the squat if a car is setup and driven correctly for it (correct ride height, spring rate, alignment, damper valving). Generally just lengthen the rear traction arm by 5-10mm and that will help the squat and bump steer too. You are also correct with the roll centre too. This too also needs to be adjustable if you start messing with suspension geometry.   Having done quiet a bit of testing on race cars this year in regards to rear squat, I've seen some big positives from it in regards to drive off corners and traction.
