I just did an oil change and filter change, used Penrite HPR-10 and new oil filter.

Shortly after, (a few drives of the GTR) and there is bottom end knocking. I don't know if the engine was old and the thin oil has let it go or the oil filter is causing it?

What do you guys think? I'm obviously up for a rebuild of some sort now =(

ryco or the like then... could be half the problem... I only use genuine filters.. for this exact reason!

Next time , spend the extra time and go and buy one from nissan. they realy are not that expensive !

Couple of questions...

Did you fill the engine with oil - then check after it has cooled to ensure that there is enough in there, OR did you just fill it and not check and keep driving it?

Second Q - Is the filter leaking, and is there an appropriate amount of oil in there now?

I have used RYCO filters for 5 years and never had any issues...

Thats it mate, it was a ryco one, I didn't think it would make a difference and bought the supercheap one, money definitely isnt a factor so ill be hitting my head agaisnt this screen if a 10 dollar filter is going to cost me a rebuild..!! The guy there sold me one and i went back as it didnt fit then he told me to use an sr20 filter. The sr20 filter got put on after the first one didnt fit but im not sure how good/bad it is to use on the rb26?

The apprentice mechanic who did the job did not check after it was cooled to ensure enough was in there. To my surprise i just checked and there is only half (halfway from low to high on the dipstick!)

Nissan have two filters u can use for a r34..

Small one made in japan, and a larger one that is made in thiland.

Now when i go and get filters for my mates Gtir they give me the small one, yet when i get one for a 1.6l N15 pulsar its the large one, so i dont see a problem using a SR20 filter. Best to check the car your self.

The reason they did this is due to space. Some ppl like the smaller filter, i myself like the larger filter.

When i got my car from the dealer i know it had just had a oil change... had a ryco filter on it.. and i know they dont have them in japan.. i went straight to nissan and got the filter, and i compared it to the one that was on the car. Just look to make sure the seals are in the same spot , not much to it realy!

Yuck apprentice mechanic working on a GTR, that is just wrong in so many ways, I won't even let a fully qualified mechanic touch my GTR. Only Skyline specialist mechanics & workshops. Sounds to me like the apprentice took it for a spin. Was anything else done in this service, like requiring the crank angle sensor to be removed and refitted etc?

Get compression test and/or leakdown test to asses the health of the engine.

Why HPR-10 though? It's a a 10w50, the hot rating is just too thick for a RB26DETT.

Cheers for the advice guys, i've learnt my lesson. nobody except for trusted skyline mechanics are going to touch her from now on!

What can i try in the meantime before I send her off for a rebuild..changing filter to nissan filter? any help would be appreciated.

If the bottom end is knocking its cactus, you have done a bearing and will need a rebuild

Ryco filter is fine, it will not cause bearing problems

Oil weight not really the issue and will not solve your problem

Most likely it hasn't got enough oil in it and you have been cornering/braking/accelerating hard and its starved the bearings of oil... been there done that... it sucks:/

Oil is best filled to the hump on the dipstick... then if you are going to the track add an extra 0.5 – 1L

cant believe this s#&t..i had so many plans to do better things with the money! anyone recommend a good rebuilder in Perth? ive found a combo on ebay (eagle rods + wiseco pistons) for 1.3k delivered. Is that a decent price?

What else will I be needing for a bottom end rebuild besides gaskets, bearings and machining the crank etc?

the difference between the full and low marks on a dipstick is about 1L. and as long as there is oil on the dipstick between those marks then you are still in the safe zone, unless you had been giving the car a bit of a hard time in the mean time. if you hadn't then that isn't the cause.

as for genuine vs non-genuine filters, not much in it really. ryco are one of the better filters on the market. i would rate them up there with genuine as i have a feeling that they make some of the genuine filters for cars, and i have a feeling that in the user manual for the pulsar it states a ryco part number for the oil filter. so they are pretty much an industry standard.

as for only letting skyline specialists work on your car, that just made me laugh. maybe if it was an engine rebuild, but for an oil change? hell, unqualified people do it themselves, some of who have never been shown how to do it and only read how on the internet. itsn't that hard. and what's to say that once you leave the workshop they don't just have their apprentice work on the car? look at all the complaints people have about tuning shops. i think you will find that every performance shop will have someone with a horror story about the work done (some more than others), so at the end of the day you find someone with a bit of intelligence that might not know everything about the car but is able to put 2 and 2 together and get 4 on the first try.

back on topic, i don't think the knock has anything to do with the oil filter (unless it wasn't sealing properly and had dumped most of the oil, which it hasn't since the dipstick is still showing an oil level), and i don't think the quality of oil used is an issue either. the weight may have played a small part though. i think that there was possibly an underlying issue and putting new oil in has just made it much more noticable. were you using the same weight oil previously, or is this the first time you have changed the oil. if this is the first time then (or at least the first time with that weight oil) i would say that there is a good chance that the previous oil was hiding an underlying issue and the new oil has brought it to light.

or it could just be a plain old coincidence that it happened shortly after an oil change and has absolutely nothing to do with the oil or filter being changed and it just started making the noise because that's when whatever is causing it finally failed.

I highly doubt its the oil filter... I have never used a genuine filter on any car I have ever owned and they are fine.

Exactly ^^

No way in hell did a ryco filter cause the knocking. Nissan gen. filters arent that good. They are probably made in the same factory ryco's etc are made. Even on new cars, ryco maintains the new car warranty. So there is no problem @ all using a Ryco filter.

Dont be suckered in to think that nissan gen is always the best. Though i agree in SOME cases they are, but certainly not this one. Clearly sometimes they are the same if not inferior.

Most probably its oil level if anything.
