Had a nice, white r30 a few years ago. Unfortunately govt took it away. Looking to replace it as fun car for weekends - intend to restore and perhaps add multi-throttle body injection (just to make sure I'm not starving it of air and fuel you understand).

Am after a standard r30 4 door sedan with a manual gearbox and L24E - it must be a six. Something that's a days drive from the ACT would be nice too (not too interested in WA or NT cars - QLD cars could be OK).

Also interested in any insight as to why there's no r30s around for sale anymore and, of those that are, why they are snapped up so quickly? Saw a post here suggesting the poor things get bought and stripped for bits that are in demand in the Mid-East. What a waste!

Thanks for this JH. My old white R30 was a car i converted from auto to manual. Shell had about 200k on it, the driveline donor had about 450k on it. Gearbox was servicable but a little noisy, drive shaft nearly killed me. It was only a few ks from snapping at the first uni joint after about six months.... The massive vibration through the car was the only sign. I might keep car one in mind though.

The vic one looks v nice. As does the NSW example. Might give owner of the NSW one a call tomorrow to see if its still available.

Hi,

This one's very interesting (not L24E though). http://www.skylinesaustralia.com/forums/Sa...nv-t293969.html

However it's in SA. Just out of curiosity I got a few transport quotes. Best quote Adelaide to Melb (for the car only) was $180 with TNT.

I replaced a heap if lines when it was a project car back in 2007

that line depcted is for a vac guage i had to see what stuff was doing at different revs, I was trying to diagnose the kickdown revs/pressure etc. it sometimes used to kick in and out of overdrive and was friggen annoying.

The line was a recycled washer line from a wreck!!! doesnt like the heat...

Yes Auto, full manual convrsion sitting in the garage on the parts car

Success!

I bought the 160k NSW $1200 one on the weekend. Many thanks to the vendor (who must surely be on this forum).

It is eff-off straight, appears to be completely intact and drives like a dream (albeit a slooooow dream). It is essentially a one owner car. It is so good, I'm actually reconsidering the more extensive and expensive plans I had for it.

Mag86, had a look for you at the show and shine by the lake a couple of weekends ago. Hung around the car a couple of times, poked and prodded it to see if you'd turn up, but you must have been busy looking at other cars.

you sure do have a nice Skyline, it is as you say immaculate. Good luck with the conversion. Let me know what parts out of the donor car you don't want.

Also, what to people think of the parts thread? Some of the posts are a bit old now. Any comments on good places to get R30 parts in 2009?

Congrats on the car. Interested to know what plans you have for it.

The forum is a good place to find parts. My first post here was to find a replacement distributor - had two offers within a couple of days. I'm in Melbourne and the local wreckers still have R30's in the yard.

cheers,

JohnH

Jh, intentions were some type of multithrottle set up, with improvements to chassis to cope i.e. firm up suspension, better front brakes. Except for the intake set, nothing too radical - just something nice, straight and perhaps a bit retro.

Melbourne is probably your best bet for parts.

But I am parting out the red hatch fairly quickly, the more sought after bits go in a few days.

I highly suggest gettting a parts car....

Mag86, the car I bought doesn't have power steering. So was thinking about getting parts needed for conversion (steering box, column, pump, mounts and anything else necessary). Does anyone know whether this is easily achievable or is there some quirk/weirdness - such as lack of mounting points - standing in my way?

I could do it for you. But it would be a bugger to get to ACT. Why no P/S??????. All my R30 have had it, even the poverty pack RMR. Is it really an R30?????

It is definitely an MR30. It was bought by an old guy in '84 who didn't option PS or A/C. It was obviously a bad summer in 87/88 as he went back to Nissan dealer and coughed up about $900 to get factory air installed. I have all the reciepts and the 'Genuine Nissan Air' sticker he never put on the car.

Anyway I was also under the assumption all MRs had these features too. Really looking to get the parts (at some point in the near future) and have a go at it myself. Have you replaced these parts yourself? Is it an easy job?

    • Also, the cause of fuel spills and smells from the top of the tank is almost always the rubber hoses that are up there, not the tank seal.
    • 1. No, as you say you can remove the connectors and fuel lines. Before you do make sure you remove fuel pump fuse and crank the starter a few times to release pressure, and also loosen the fuel cap (just in case the tank is slightly pressurised) as it will pump out the lines otherwise 2. Not necessary but you are right, if it is the factory pump it is at risk of failing after 25 years....Changing it is not hard but potentially not trivial as you have to make sure you have the right pickup/sock for the pump to suit the tank, need to make wiring connections (crimped butt connectors would be fine) and have to mount/adapt the new pump in the right place in the cradle. Not impossible but don't start the job if you aren't confident. Also, the plastic nut that holds that seal in place can be really hard to remove. If you don't have a fuel nut removal tool it generally requires a big screwdriver or similar to bash the ring around a few times before you can get it by hand. Also the fuel lines can be very sticky on the tank lid fittings, hose removal pliers can help or if not twist the hose on the fitting (eg with linesperson's pliers) to break the seal before you try and remove it. Finally, mark the feed and return hoses so you don't put them on backwards and seal them with an m8 bolt to stop crap getting into the lines while working. Add a little grease in the threads of the plastic lid when you go to do it back up as a gift to your future self, and make sure you put it on evenly/not cross threaded.  Having said all that, most likely the lid just needs to be either tightened or removed and put back on without being cross threaded...the seal itself is usually pretty good.
    • Another weekend and another project I have questions about.... I bought a fuel tank sender O ring to install on the car because I'm quite sus on what I've got now.  1. No "whooosh" sound when opening fuel cap 2. If I fill up full tank, there will be a small leak under the car and it comes from the top of the fuel tank, dripping along the side. Stops after a short while 3. Hot days = 50/50 chance to get high as a kite inside the cabin if the car was in the sun for too long This is what I bought: https://www.amayama.com/en/part/nissan/1734279900 My plan was to just replace the O ring but I've got some questions: 1. Does the whole fuel pump assembly need to come out for me to replace the O ring?         Or, could I unplug all the connectors and fuel lines at the top, take off the twisty part (17343) and put in the O ring from the top?  2. Is it a very common thing for everyone to just change the pump whenever doing this?        I see the Walbro 255 gets thrown in a lot but I've got no issues with my pump so far. When I did the tune, I asked the guy to check my fuel pressure and he said there were no issues too. But is it just a good idea to change to the 255 anyway as the old unit may have been in there for so long? The 255 seems to be a direct fit for GTT (I got no soldering iron)
    • Normal speedtek issues, bin it and go cdoo# or 8hp. So many issues with these gearsets, a mate went through 3 rebuilds and multiple parts with heat, bearing and vibration issues.
    • I wouldn't go near them, they are rubber seals for a reason. Just chuck new cam cover seals, half moons and the spacers for the screws every decade or two. I add a really thin layer of silicone too and it seems to hold together OK
