Bov Question

how do i make my car make pretty noisess. my mates mates bros car has flutter.

joking

anyway just some advice basicly my new setup has aftermarket plenum and turbo etc, so i want to keep the piping nice and pretty, so recirculated bov is out of question because i dont want some ugly pipe from plenum to intake pipe. means i will have to run an venting bov.

2 questions.

1st. should i also put the afm into the intercooler pipe on the cold side? and should this be placed closer to the throttle body before the bov so. plenum => throttle body => afm => bov => cooler

2nd. is there any venting bov which is silent and doesnt make every1 look at u when it has its hecktic "WOOOSHH POSSHHH LOOK @ ME IM GAY"

1. aftermarket front facing plenum.

2. trust turbo, trust turbos dont like no bov.

3. for a track drift car, so when i come into a corner top of 3rd and lift off pedal so the car doesnt stall and i crash n die.

you have a Plazmaman Plenum dont u think the recirculate pipe is ugly as?

get a flange welded onto your cooler piping and mount your bov behind one of the headlights (i have myne on the drivers side) and run the recirc pipe behind the cooler and back up with the piping into the intake pipe. atmo bovs and afm's dont go together too well most of the time

Simple two answers. Dont move the AFM, no idea why you are considering that. And no atmo bov will be quite.

He's considering it because when you do a draw through set up like he's talking about, it prevents stalling when the BOV does it's thing, and many people have problems with turbulence in the intake piping when they use a MAF on a top mount set up due to space considerations and not being able to keep the MAF far enough away from the turbo.

OP--of all the BOV's I've seen going VTA, the Greddy Type R seems the least obnoxious to me. It's a relatively large orafice it vents through so it's quiet'ish and decidedly not "chirpy". I'm completely with you on your taste of BOV noise (or lack there of).

Hey,

I don't think a re-circulating system is out of the question.

The BOV can be placed at any point between the compressor and the throttle plate(s) - it doesn't need to come off the plenum.

So you could put it right near the turbo outlet and run a short pipe back to the inlet (downstream of the AFM), can still be pretty.

If you do this, a re-circulating setup from the perspective of measuring air becomes useless - you can't re-inject the air downstream of the AFMs anymore.

Not really. The bigger the outlet pipe diameter, the less velocity/noise - but I haven't seen a 10" BOV. The more boost, the more noise upon release.

If you are going to keep the AFM setup, and you think a BOV is essential, then leave the AFM upstream of the compressor and put a re-circ system into place.

I'm sure someone can make this pretty for you (and you won't have to explain why your car sometimes tries to set fire to the cars behind it to the po-po).

Or if the current pipework is finished and you really really don't want the noise, leave the BOV off entirely.

Or if you want a justification for fitting an atmo BOV - man up, you don't need one. Just fit what you want ;)

i never really took much notice in other peoples setup.

what do most peopple do with highmount setup with forward facing plenums?

i was planing to go no bov but then my turbo choice changed to a trust, and i know heaps of peopole with trust setups with no bov and they all need rebuilding LOL

well I'm running a T518Z on my silvia with all metal intake and cooler piping and no BOV. no problems at all from the turbo but you'll need to be prepared to live with some chronic tutututututu everytime you lift of the throttle or change gear. I haven't seen any ill effect from not having a BOV on it but I think I might add one purely to get rid of the insane noises it makes....

lol. I think they need a lesson in turbo charger operation basics. compressor surge is a phenomenon that occurs where a compressor is producing more airflow at a point where the engine cannot ingest it. it also occurs in twin turbo engines and is sometimes refereed to as turbo shuffle etc. it is eliminated by carefully reviewing compressor maps and choosing the right turbo and some manufactures also add small bypass holes (anti surge covers/slots/etc) to combat it too as the turbo is spooling up. as for the turbo spinning in the other direction. rofl. that would be a neat trick to stop a compressor AND turbine wheel that are spinning at 100,000rpm and linked by a common shaft and make them turn the other way in a split second even though there is constant pressure on the exhaust side keeping it turning the same way..... I would like to see them demonstrate that.

by their logic my turbo must be super fked by now. it's been running without any kind of bov since new and by now must be just as good at spinning backwards as it is at spinning forwards. imagine that. every time I lift off the throttle my turbo spins backwards and forces exhaust gas back into my engine and at the same time is sucking air and fuel out of the intake and blowing it out the pod filter. bummer dude.

Seriously, the whole "BOV" and "dose" and "compressor surge" thing is probably the most misunderstood and misleading bunch of shit read about on the internet.

I run a BOV on mine, but it is wound up that tight it hardly ever goes off unless im on full noise, which is the way i like it.

The car will only "stall and die"  if your clutch is in. 

I don't run a bov,   mine can stall between gears but only if there is a reasonable load on the engine and I change gears really slowly.

Not when lifting off and still in gear.
