I am currently working on tuning this thing via ROM. My goals are to have a very stock looking car with 450hp. Some background:

I bought this car from Mainland Japan and had it shipped down to Okinawa. It was very stock except for a foldout TV that got removed the day I recieved the car. The drivetrain was sourced from a rusted and wrecked R32 GTR. All of the swap was done by me, including the wiring. It really helps that the Junkyards here are full of R33 stuff that bolts onto the R34 easily.

I am trying to make it look like the car is factory stock. I even went as far as putting the R33 battery tray and windshield washer resivior, which is mostly bolt in. I just installed SARD injectors in it last week. This paired with the Nismo turbos and the RB Neo MAFS should yield and easy 450hp at about 1bar of boost. There are no function dynos here in Okinawa, let alone an AWD dyno, so it will have to be the trusty ass dyno.

A couple of you all may wonder why I am on the Auissie Skyline board. There isnt much english Skyline support here in this county.

Nice build man, but why start with the GT-four? Wouldnt a GTR be cheaper? Comes with brakes, suspention, exterior and interior differences as well?

I bought my car from Sapporo for about $4000us. With all of the mods, its about $8000us total. On Goo-net, the cheapest R34 GTR was aound $30,000us for one that had been wrecked. I know the R32 GTR can be had for cheaper, but I wanted an R34 because they are still kinda rare. I was pretty lucky finding a wrecked R32 GTR to get all of the parts from.

So is it a GT-Four driveline or a R32 GTR driveline?

It uses the R32 transmission. I wish I could get the R33 GTR mission as it is pull type clutch, same as R34 GtFour. It has the R32 GTR Engine as well. Although I did keep the rest of the GTFour drivetrain though, including the stock 4.3 final gear using the old RB25 oilpan as they were the same minus the gears inside the diff. The rear uprights have been changed to facilitate the GTR struts, as they use the fork style lower mount.

Luke, as for your questions here goes. The Rb26 is drop in. I used all the accessories from the RB25 including alternator, starter, power steering pump, A/C compressor, main pully, and all belts from the RB25. A custom A/C line had to be made to clear the front turbo inlet. As far as the mounts, used the factory R34 mounts. In my experience with RB motors, there are R33/R34 2wd mounts and R32 2wd mounts, but the AWD mounts seem to all be the same. I just used my R34 mounts as the rubber in them should be better than the R32 were. The wiring took me a while as the R32 plug design is different from the R34. I basically separated the Engine specific wiring from the RB26 harness and grafted it to the R34 harness. This allowed me to retain all ABS/ATESSA wiring. Also, I used the R34 RB25 lower harness to retain the speedometer and alternator wiring. On this note, I have a couple friends that their speedos still dont work on their R34s, but the GTFour uses a different design to allow for an easier swap. The wiring is the hardest thing in the swap, but I am not sure how the R34 GTR harness is going to swap in. Of course some mapping with a multimeter would help out. This isnt too difficult for me though as the US Marine Corp has taught me all of my wiring skills. I have done a few harnesses here in Okinawa for guys doing swaps, like an RB25 into an S14.

Update:

Installed my E60 MAFs yesterday. The scaling wasnt as high as I though it would be. Just some info on the fuel scaling for my current setup:

SARD 700cc (light blue) injectors 64% scaling at .96ms latency

E60 MAFs (RB Neo) 128% scaling

Kinda suprised me about the MAFs because all the sites on the net were talking about the RB MAFs being 150% larger, but these are the numbers I calculated after a couple runs with my wideband. They should give me the metering to push up the power to a tad over 500hp, but I am only looking for 450hp or so. I really dont want to modify my airbox to run the 80mm MAFs so I am trying to source a used Apexi Super Suction kit for the 80mm MAFs, dont want to buy it new. Right now the MAFs are just hanging off the rubber piping with no filters, terrible!

Fair enough.

So the GTFour driveline is constantly in 4wd correct?

Its a normal ATESSA ETS system that the GTR runs. I just dont have a torque meter. I think it is the same as the R34 GTR system, without the active rear diff. Unless you referring to the 10% forward bias that the R33/34 GTR has, then yes that is the same.

Some updates:

I have been working on my airbox for the past week. I was going to run the Apexi Super Suction for the larger MAFs, but I really dont want to spend the money. I bought myself an early Christmas present, a Dremel rotory tool. It was really so I could cut up my airbox to fit the larger MAFs to it. I cut the flange off of the old airbox from the Neo motor and sort of glued it to the GTR box with a little if cutting and sanding. I think it will work out OK and should not really be visible when installed. The bottom MAF will only need the hole widened. I had a slight boost leak that I remedied after tuning for the MAFs, so I will have to rescale again now the boost leak is gone. Next, I am going to look for a clutch. I want the Nismo twin that has the red cover made by Exedy, I have been told it has a stock pedal feel.

Trying to decide what to do about suspension setups.

Right now I am running Billsteins and Nismo springs designed for the R33 GTR, but that was just to get me by. Next thing will be R34 GTR coilovers of some sort, but I dont know what. Obviously will be used from Upgarage but I dont know what. And then I am think about poly bushings, but I dont know where to get AWD stuff for the fron. I am also wanting to get wider wheels for the front as my wheels are staggered (yuck for AWD). After all this I need a way to adjust camber. I just need a setup for what little touge we have on our tiny island.

I am thinking Tein flex with 275 rubber all around. What camber settings?

    • Put an endoscope down the hole and saw this. Not quite all around the bore but a good 60% at least. Chin to the chest and towards further disappointments I guess.
    • 2 does "sort of" applies, maybe......but looking at what parts would be needed for the swap to get engineered, registered, and insured, and basically that's everything under the car, the modifications the make it legal would be problematic and horrendously expensive, all for a street car that just cruises around and hits a few twisty roads on the weekends Also, from looking at the NSW rules and Regs, with all modifications that is required just to make the car safe and not twist itself to pieces, and then actually get registered for street use, may still be impossible nowadays As for 1, when you add in a fresh engine, fresh transmission, rear cradle and diff, tailshaft, suspension, brakes, cooling, and all the other fabrication required, your probably looking at up to $100k to do it right, all for a 20 year old MX5 that is over engineered and you would never be able to actually use the power it has on the street, much like your beastie, which I love, but you actually track that thing and can use all of its powers in anger, in a safe environment  Hell, the old Bogan Cruise Ship had more power than I could use on the street, and in hindsight, I went a bit silly on that thing, it didn't really need the 500hp it had for what I actually used the car for, it was fun, but basically unusable on the street if you value your licence  As for cams, yeah, I'll probably book it in for them to get installed and tuned soonish, like next month after MX5 Mania are back at work....... and yes, I've already sent a email to bin the turbo quote and quote instead to install cams and a new Fluidampr balancer that will suit the 2.5 better than the OEM 2.0 balancer that is swapped over for the 2.5 install, as the balancer needs to get pulled to time the cams it's a while your in there sort of thing I did think a bit about flex fuel for a laugh, but being na, and no where really around locally anymore to get E85, I've binned that idea, so no sweet sweet corn smells are set for the car I wish E85 was more of a standard fuel, it's better for the environment, better for tuning, plus that sweet sweet smell we all love As for fitting in the family, that's not needed, as everyone in the family already owns a car that can seat 5 humans comfortably enough, the MX5 is "my toy" As for buying a car that is already built, nah, I would rather pick and choose my parts, I enjoy the process, and in the big picture, the additional cost is well worth the enjoyment, and the occasional frustration, I get out of doing it, albeit with other people spinning the spanners, and me, just paying the invoice 🤣
    • Excuse me, but 2) does apply 1) Would also apply if you consider how much is spent in the alternatives. Also there's the option of 3), buy one pre-built that you can put your family in (it's me, it's my car)   That said, I went on a ~500km drive the other day. I didn't use anything more adventurous than 3rd/4th gear at about ~3000RPM and 50% throttle and I was going as fast as anyone has any sense doing on a public road, with enough grip to the point where I didn't want to go any faster. I was obviously under the limit of the current car etc etc. MX5 with 2.5 N/A to achieve the same speed would be more fun for any road scenario. Maybe consider cams. I wouldn't boost it. The use case is just not there and it won't actually make the car more enjoyable unless you really do plan on wringing gears from 1st to 3rd (at least) at 100% WOT on a public road to 150+kmh.
