hey id b very carefull b4 starting an insurance thread as every1 will tell you 2 use the search button..............

but 2 answer your question it wont make much difference 2 your insurance cost as i hav asked b4 and they work out the cost based on the youngest person driving the car :D

also if u drive the car more than stated they will void your insurance so b careful

i wouldnt risk putting it in ure dads name, even if u are the "2nd driver" cus if they realise the car is ures and u drive it, not ure dad, even those few days a week. they will stuff u up and try turn it into some sort of "invalid" thing. i dunno, ive heard alot of stories about people getting raped with costs because they crash after having it in mum or dads name.

Most insurance companies have some sort of new policy about turbo imports implemented recently. They'll continue their existing ones, but very reluctant to take on any new. Tried virtually the whole yellow pages last month, and most didn't even get to the age question. Your best bet is to go for a broker. They managed to set me up with SGIO as the only driver (i'm 23) for round $1800.

Ahh love it :D

Insurance, where you pay a premium cos you guarantee you will have a crash and they take the bet and guarantee you won't....

It's just like the casino where the odds are usually in the favour of the house.

My suggestion ( which will meet with howls of derision ) is to buy a bunky POS for a few years and FULLY insure it.

Prove you aren't a dickhead and get a no claim bonus.

THEN go for the super turbo ubeaut wankified special using your no claim bonus to get the quote under the national debt :)

As posted earlier , use your old mans name to insure and it's bound to end in tears cos the house always wins...

Cheers

Ken

Kens right...

When i tried sorting out insurance for a skyline i was 20 with a 20% NCB. I also live in a nice suburb NOR. They (Famous) still quoted me $3600. My mate who is 20, same area, with no NCB only paid $2600.......

Certain insurance companies are very dodgy..... Think very carefully, read between the lines and make sure you know everything you can do.

Just buy something cheap to insure (hell even 3rd party still gives u a NCB). Save your money and buy a better car in a year or so.

However saying that, if your willing to pay 3.5-4K at least, then you shouldnt have too many problems

Insurance companies arnt dodgy, they just know that young driver + fast car = bad news (even if you've done heaps of driver training etc etc). The best thing to do is drive a bunky (old gemini) for a few years and get up a 40-50% NCB and then try again. It sucks but do you really want to pay $3500/year for insurance, prang the car and then be told by the insurance company they wont pay up because you modified the car, or there was evidence to show you were doing faster than the speed limit?

i used to have a mazda 929 84 coupe, had it insured as 3rd party for a year, (first car) and just recently got my skyline NA, and i think im on 20% NCB already and having to pay $1900 a year full cover with Western QBE. (its only because i was a previous member with them, that they would insure me again).

you can only safely insure the car in your dads name if the CAR IS REGISTERED IN HIS NAME. then HE becomes the owner and you literally become a driver. that way legally there is nothing that anyone can say to show you own the car (cos you dont), but that way you will usually only ever get a 2 year no claim bonus when you decide to get a car registered in your name and insured in your name. and if you do that after 2 years then there is no loss. If you drive like that for 6 years and then change to your own name then you lose out on 4 years worth of no claim bonus.

You only have to hope you dont crash it.

Because if you get third party then you are covered for any damage you cause to any property, just no cover for the damage YOU cause to YOUR car.

third party fire and theft covers you for the same thing as third party except that it will cover you if you car gets stolen or burnt. stolen is something you would worry about but no so much the burnt part. If someone knocks into you with either that or third party their insurance will pay for your damage or if they are uninsured there are companies (only 2 now i think) that will act on your behalf for a percentage of the settlement and they will contact the uninsured person that knocked you etc and BE YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY in that situation.

So in all the other 2 options aint bad. Comprehensive is good because you can build a no claim bonus and you are covered if you damage your own car. but its not always necessary.

I used 3rd party fire and theft for 3 years before i needed comprehensive. but now thats all i get cos I have had a few break ins etc.

stupid belmont.

hope that sheds some light.

sent you a PM as well

the reason you see so many threads on here about people looking for parts etc is because so many are insured but are too afraid of losing their no claim bonus etc over a small bingle and would rather repair it themselves. thats when it almost seems pointless to get insurance if you know you can repair your car cheaply. the time you need it though it when you manage to write off someone elses car instead and then their company approach you for the $20,000 repair bill.

thats why so many can get by on third party insurance. its the best value. you pay like $300 (if you are young) and they pay up to 20 mill

hey guys thanks 4 the input, i will try a broker and see wat i can get, also i might look at 3rd party with fire and theft, but im not to sure who does that type of cover.

i guess i will just try to the yellow pages and start from the start and work my way down :D

My car is in my mums name but i am down as secondary driver ..... which made the insurance go up but still having your name even as a secondary driver will help when it comes time to get your own insurance.

Its with the RAC costs $1400 a year ..... apparently RAC wont take on any new import policies tho.

All the insurance companies i tried didnt give a flying f**k that id been insured as a second driver for 2 years previously?

and yeh true dat zanda, i had 2 get sum1 else 2 ring round 4 me wen i first got insurance as most companies will think 'hey young person!' lets rip him off with sum outrageous quote or will refuse to deal with you or will say they will get back to you and never do

    • I should clarify that the previous owner put the wheels on, so Im not entirely sure what he bought. I was searching the Rota page and found these two as the only matches. It did not occur to me that perhaps they sell these wheels with different offsets. I guess the best way to solve this is to take the wheels off and measure them from the inside to be sure.
    • The offset doesn't really have anything to do with dish directly. I mean it kind of does but it also doesn't, it's only tangenial. The offset is purely how much offset (get it) the mounting face is from the CENTER of the width of the rim. I.e, the mounting face would be directly in the middle of the 9.5inches if it was a 18x9.5 ET0 rim. Given it is a +12 rim, the mounting face is 12mm further away from the center (to the outside of the car). Your fronts are +30, so the mounting face is 30mm further away from the center (to the outside of the car). I would wager this doesn't look right, because most skylines generally have the same with guards front to back. So I'd think your fronts look significantly more sunken in than your rears. I'd wager by about 18mm, or so.
    • My '96 r33 Skyline has Rota GTR, 18 x 9.5 inch, ET30 on the front and Rota GTR-D, 18 x 9.5 inch, ET12 on the rear. (Put on by previous owner) The 12mm offset is throwing me for a loop. Is it due to the "deep dish" design of the wheel that the offset it so low? Or is it actually that low on the rear normally? If I were buying a set of new wheels, could I put 30mm offsets on the rear and reasonably expect them to fit? I have GTR Brembos and 370Z rotors (355mm/350mm) if it matters. Thank you.
