R32 Help Please

Hey guys, reasonably new to the forum so G'day to everyone! Been into skylines for about a year now I sold my gts-t for a neat stock rb20det gts-4 but I'm stuck with a problem. I didnt pick it up at first but driving it the engine runs smooth but seems to be running really rich, there is a strong smell of fuel and bit of black smoke from exhaust when i rev it... and what appears a little bit of fuel or water from exhaust when its revved.

Apparantly the catalytic converter is screwed but I'm guessing that would be because its been running so rich to start with? Can anyone help me diagnose how it could be over fueling?! I am not really mechanically minded but I can suggest maybe faulty fuel pump, o2 sensor, engine management, injectors? but I have no idea how to trouble-shoot this or find out which one of those if any could be the problem. Any help would be appreciated!

Welcome aboard. Great little car, the GTS4. Pity the RB20 is so under-powered for it.

To your problem:

faulty fuel pump would more likely cause it to run lean, not rich.

O2 sensor is a possibility, but remember it has no effect unless you are at constant throttle and low-medium load, eg highway cruise. Test it with a multimeter - the middle pin @ the connector in the engine bay should show volts oscillating between 0 - 1V when the engine is run @ constant 2000rpm.

Engine management is unlikely, unless you have aftermarket ECU. Although they are programmed from the factory to run a bit rich.

Injectors - a possibility. If 1 or 2 have a bit of dirt caught in the needle, causing a fuel leak into the cylinders. Get them sonic cleaned.

Thanks for the welcome. Yeh shame about the RB20 (used to hav rb25 in my gtst) but everything else makes up for it apart from the smell lol! Good to have an R32 again. I'll have to take it too get it looked at soon, it will be interesting to find out which one is the cause. Ill try not to drive to far tho coz it really stinks lol so how much for sonic cleaning roughly if that is the cause?
